No pcrs!
No free lfts!

I have a couple boxes of lft's for now but when they run out, I won't be able to afford to buy them every time my kids have cold like symptoms. Plus let's face it, lft's aren't overly accurate so a negative lft does not mean someone hasn't got covid either.

are we just treating it as an illness as we would before covid? Keep them off if too unwell and send them back with better. Send them in with mild sniffles?

Covid is quite high at my kids school at the minute!

@Wizzbangfizz if you do a quick google search, you'll easily see this is happening outside of mumsnet.

Daqqe · 29/03/2022 13:25

I’ve had Covid 3 times. First time, I was really ill. Nothing concerning but I felt like utter shit. Recovered in 10-14 days.

Second time, felt like a bad cold. Had a couple days off work.

Third time, very minor cold.

Vaccines work. Subsequent infections are likely to be more mild. It remains that for most people it is mild & you recover in a week or so. A portion of people will be more poorly. Noticeably, they are mumsnet 😂

Eyedropeyeflop · 29/03/2022 13:28

@Daqqe

indeed, that percentage resides on mumsnet.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 29/03/2022 13:28

Glad it's got better for you each time. Might be stating the obvious here, but you know that's not the case for lots of others right?

Lilaclavenders · 29/03/2022 13:40

Ha ha yes!

Nobody in real life even mentions covid anymore, at work, among friends and family not parents/kids at school.

caringcarer · 29/03/2022 13:51

I have about half a box of test left. DFS goes to a special school and they are obsessed with testing there. They keep sending out emails saying someone in year group has Covid so can all year X test on lft and if close contact other test. We have had enough and no longer test. If DFS is unwell I will test otherwise just no. They still expect a child to stay home for 10 days at his school. Parents have been up at arms about it saying 5 days max but school won't back down. We get this in newsletter after newsletter. Teachers are constantly asking kids if they have done a test.

Really? Where do you live...we are all dropping with COVID. More friends and family testing positive and ill than ever before.

In the last week, DH, DS, MIL, DM, DM's friend, my cousin and her husband, two work colleagues, a friend and her DH. I've not known so many people I'll.
In our LA figures are above the National figures.

I had COVID 9 weeks ago...can't maintain my full time job, lost my fitness, insomnia, awful open sores on my face. Feel so dreadful.

Well good for you. Not the case here though.

In the last rwo weeks:

My husband's work colleagues - off with covid.
Me on the day I was supposed to help my brother get my mum into the care home and tested positive at 6pm that day.
My daughter and her partner - off work with covid.
My grandchildren - off school due to covid (I caught it from them).
My daughter - so ill with covid that she had to rest in bed.
Grandchild's teacher - off work with covid.

Not giving another thought to covid is not a luxury we can have at the moment, sadly.

knittingaddict · 29/03/2022 13:59

Sorry tested positive at 6am, not 6pm.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 29/03/2022 14:07

I think we can spot the anti-vax, Covid-denying, lizard-overlord posters quite easily again.

You don’t have to isolate anymore but you can’t expect schools to be running as normal and may have to take time off work (paid or unpaid) to supervise your children when teachers are sick. Teachers are getting ill (probably due to a high viral load) and as nothing is being done to change conditions, this will continue. Ultimately, it’s your offspring who suffer. Crack on, as you say.

Not where I am. Admittedly they're mostly mentioning it to tell me they/their kid has Covid.
Eyedropeyeflop · 29/03/2022 14:31

Anti vax lizard for wanting to get on with life LOL you have to laugh. Oh I’ve been triple vaccinated by the way 😉.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 29/03/2022 14:35
@BustopherPonsonbyJones I won't, and hasn't happened yet, nor has it happened to any other friends and colleagues up and down the country with school age kids, in fact the only place I have read about it happening is on mumsnet.
That’s what I like to hear. No moaning when things change, mind!

I’m still not certain why so many of those who claim to be unaffected by Covid haunt the Covid threads though. There’s a lot of ‘we’re getting on with OUR lives’ but the evidence suggests they aren’t moving on, to the point where I think there’s some form of PTS denial involved.

GrendelsGrandma · 29/03/2022 14:37

It's bonkers. We've all just had covid, DC aged 2 and 5. They only seemed slightly ill on one day (slight temp) but tested positive for ten days. With no tests, I'm not sure I'd have kept them off at all.

Lilaclavenders · 29/03/2022 14:38

Teachers are getting ill (probably due to a high viral load) and as nothing is being done to change conditions, this will continue.

Nothing can be done. But every wave eventually subsides.

Subsequent waves will hopefully be smaller as more people will have antibodies from previous infections and vaccines.

Lilaclavenders · 29/03/2022 14:41

I’m still not certain why so many of those who claim to be unaffected by Covid haunt the Covid threads though.

Perhaps to counterbalance the views?

And to express our desire to live without restrictions?

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 29/03/2022 14:41

@Eyedropeyeflop
Me too. It’s a personal choice so I don’t really care what other people do so long as I have the option of having further boosters and am a priority (like NHS staff), given the high rates of infection in my workplace. I’m quite happy to let others make their personal risk assessments on this one.

You didn’t say if you believe in the lizard people though 🙂.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 29/03/2022 14:47

Who knows? Each wave so far leaves some more people sick, more with organ damage, more strain on hospitals, more unable to work, more loss of education, more curtailment of freedom for those awaiting significant events or more vulnerable, more coping with the fallout from this for those whose personal circumstances are affected and of course the impact on economy. Some people struggle with this fallout more than others.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 29/03/2022 14:48

@Lilaclavenders

And we are back to the start. You think that your need ‘for freedom’ trumps my need for a safe workplace. Except it doesn’t as we can’t do our jobs when we are ill. Sick teachers means classes are condensed (crowd control) and at worst, closes whole year groups. if there are too many teachers absent, it will impact on you and your children’s lives. We all lose.

No man is an island.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 29/03/2022 14:52

Perceived severity of symptoms are also very subjective too. A bit like individual pain thresholds.

I’m not talking about the unfortunate few that do end up in hospital - that’s a total different scenario and indisputable

Yes, you can feel pretty shit with, for example, just a head cold, but there are those that always push on through and those that retire to their beds wrapped shivering in a blanket saying they are ‘floored’ and ‘can’t move’ It doesn’t necessarily mean they have a more severe version, it’s how they personally respond to it.

We’ve all worked with those (usually healthy) people who are off at the drop of a hat and those who have to be sent home because they insist on coming in when they’re clearly not well.

Lilaclavenders · 29/03/2022 14:54

So what measures/restrictions would you suggest as a compromise?
How costly would they be?

TheOrigRights · 29/03/2022 15:27

I've just received notification that year 8 in my son's school will need to work from home on Thursday.
My son's year Sad

He hated remote learning before. I'm hoping that he's more open to it now and the teachers are better at setting remote working and running remote classes.

KisstheTeapot14 · 29/03/2022 15:38

@SulaSA I am so sorry to hear you are so poorly Flowers. Be gentle with yourself. I hope you get better with time.

In terms of the discussion here: Yes, for many it is mild - but it is still a serious and complex virus which can be unpredictable in its effects on the body (So says Chris Whitty, and I can see the evidence in those who have got long covid or more severe reactions).

People's bodies are different and can react to infection differently - especially a novel and evolving virus know to effect different organs of the body including the brain.

It might look a bit like a cold for a lot of the time, don't be fooled. It really isn't.

GlomOfNit · 29/03/2022 15:44

@SulaSA

I despair. I am so ill with COVID eight weeks after infection. I'm now on reduced hours from my headship. I just can't get well.

I've no breath, I can't sleep, awful smell of smoke, feel as if I'm choking.
My skin is horrendous with what looks like open burns, on my face in four different patches and on my body. My GP has told me COVID can damage the skin's barrier to infection.

I used to run, now I struggle to walk more than 1k...unless I get better COVID will end my career.

I feel so discounted - 'get on with life, COVID is no more than a cold'. Oh how I wish that were true.

SulaSA I'm so sorry. Flowers People just don't get it. Flu is always going to be a problem for more vulnerable people but Covid seems to have killed more of them - but aside from that, Covid is just so unpredictable.

I had flu a few years ago. It was really horrible. I was in bed a week, had another week feeling a bit crap, and by about week 3 I would say I was totally back to normal. You're 8 weeks in ... Sad All viruses can leave you with a post-viral syndrome but the Covid variants seem much more liable to do this.

toomuchlaundry · 29/03/2022 16:12

@TheOrigRights I hope your DS gets on ok with home schooling. DS's school threw in the towel last Friday and we are now full remote provision until the Easter holidays. Luckily, DS quite enjoys home schooling, especially the proximity to the fridge and kettle!
