How easy is Covid to catch??

Saltyoledog · 26/03/2022 15:55

DS had covid 3 weeks ago but he isolated in his room and we didn’t catch it.

I’ve just been to visit my mum who was unwell when I arrived. She was coughing and very tired so I did an LFT. I had to do the throat part of it for her as she couldn’t see properly and she was sneezing as she did the nose - right in front of me.

Bloody thing was positive. I immediately put a mask on but I’d walked in to her house (all closed up, no ventilation). I was probably there 15 minutes unmasked and in the unventilated house and then a further 5-10 in the house with a mask on / door open.

What’s my chances?? 🦠😟

I've been home with my 11 year old who tested positive on March 13th. He's been coughing, sneezing and we've not been separated in any way. I don't seem to have caught it amazingly. I've never had covid and had my booster mid December.

feliznavidad2 · 26/03/2022 16:27

There's quite a strong chance you may get it if she sneezed right by you.

Having said that, you may be lucky. It's weird how some people get it and some don't.

Raera · 26/03/2022 16:29

I've got it, DH hasn't and we have been living normally.

Lulu1919 · 26/03/2022 16:31

Ps no need to do nose just do throat
It's pretty contagious but I've also found it picks and chooses !!

Soul11Soul · 26/03/2022 16:31

There is literally no answer to this question because it depends on so many variables. I have been at home tending to covidy children and hisband on two different ocassions weeks apart and have never had it. I had my youngest in bed with me because they were poorly and anxious and she repeatedly sneezed and coughed in my face. My husband kissed me full on the lips about ten minutes before he got a positive lft (no symptoms) and my son and I shared a bottle of water. There is no rhyme or reason.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 26/03/2022 16:33

My DH sat on a plane with someone who tested negative to fly and then tested positive at home that night. He tested positive the following day. I was negative. We stayed away from each other. I was positive 24hours later. Our toddler. Negative. Hmm

EricScrantona · 26/03/2022 16:34

There is no logic to covid. I had intimate contact with DH before he tested positive and lived as normal after but didn't catch it. I sat next to someone in an Office for a few hours touching nothing after each other but we tested positive in a day of each other so assume we caught it from the same source I.e a door handle etc.

JellyTots2009 · 26/03/2022 16:37

I work in a care home and all but two of my residents caught it so many staff off with it.

I never caught it.

sweetzy · 26/03/2022 16:38

I caught

roseberrycherry · 26/03/2022 16:38

I've got it, DH, DS and DD haven't caught it. I'm on day 6

beautifullymad · 26/03/2022 16:39

I was fussing over my son. I did his hair, gave him paracetamol for his headache and kissed him.

He tested very positive 4 hours later.

I didn't get it.

sweetzy · 26/03/2022 16:39

Ffs I caught it stood next to someone indoors before he had symptoms.

fromcitytocountry · 26/03/2022 16:51

Easily enough that I've caught it twice. First was from my husband within a few days of his positive test, and this time round ... absolutely no idea. It's possible to catch it from anywhere or anyone

dementedpixie · 26/03/2022 16:53

Who knows?
My dh had it in December and I shared the bed and living spaces with him throughout. I never caught it and neither did my 2 dc's

Groovee · 26/03/2022 17:06

My whole household bar needs had it in December. As I thought I would catch it, I mixed with them.

It was then rife in school in January and I was one of 2 staff who didn't catch it.

SpringRainbow · 26/03/2022 17:14

It appears to be completely random. Some people seem to just need the briefest encounters, whereas others appear to ‘escape’ despite high exposure.

All you can do is monitor yourself.

JemimaMuddledUp · 26/03/2022 17:15

There's no apparent logic to it.

Myself and my friend caught it in a quiet restaurant, either from the server or another diner. I didn't pass it on to any of the people that I live with.

OliveTree75 · 26/03/2022 18:35

There’s no rhyme or reason in my experience. I’ve spent a full night with a friend who tested positive the next morning and I didn’t catch it. I’ve comforted poorly children at work who then had a positive lft once they got home. Sat next to a colleague in a meeting who tested positive a few hours later! Been fine

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 26/03/2022 18:39

I definitely think there are 'super spreaders' around. A group of friends went to an event, just sitting eating, and everyone of them caught it. I'm not sure if they spread it because their viral load is so high or just because
I though a friend was immune. She worked on a covid ward before ppe was sorted, slept with her partner when they were positive and her kids had it. After all that she has just tested positive now when all her family are clear
It's all very strange

Gwenhwyfar · 26/03/2022 19:16

"so assume we caught it from the same source I.e a door handle etc."

Unlikely because surface transmission has been proven to be small. Isn't it more likely you got it from sharing the same air for an extended period of time?

Icequeen01 · 26/03/2022 19:31

I had it in Jan 2020 as did 14 of my 16 work colleagues. My DH and DS caught it from me.

I had it again over Xmas this year and this time 15 out of 17 of my work colleagues caught it. My DH (who continued sleeping and mixing with me throughout) didn't catch it this time. Neither did my DS.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/03/2022 19:47

It seems very random. I had Covid last August, presumably Delta, that I caught from a work colleague who sits a metre away. I've since been in close contact with 2 people who had Omicron, shared a bed with one, and didn't catch it either time.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/03/2022 19:50

I was hugging a heartbroken ds, and rubbing my head in his beard. Talking face to face to him for about an hour.

He was positive day after this, and l didn’t get it.

Onegingerhead · 26/03/2022 20:04

Husband tested positive and moved into downstairs bedroom. We tried to isolate but I still caught it two days later.

whereareyousleep · 26/03/2022 21:37

DH had it in august and gave it to me and ds8 but not ds3. Also gave it to my dad but not my mum who never caught it despite carrying on as normal with my dad same bathroom etc

DS8 caught it again 6 days ago. Me and ds4 tested positive yesterday DH negative for now though in honesty I think he will get it. Symptoms this time very mild though only day 2 although kids have been symptomatic this time, last time DS had no symptoms.

I think some people are just naturally much more immune than others! My mum for example has been a close contact loads of times but never had it.
