How long does immunity last?

SpikyJugs · 23/03/2022 23:15

I know lots of people who have had covid twice - usually the second time is a couple of months after the first time.

I recovered from COVID and tested negative last week. I was exposed to someone who has tested positive yesterday... I'm assuming that just a week since I had it I'm pretty immune...

what's the quickest people have caught it for the second time since having it the first time?

11 weeks for me (triple vaccinated before I caught it for the first time).

SpringRainbow · 24/03/2022 04:09

At the moment we seem to have two versions of Omnicron circulating around, which is probably why people seem to be catching Covid again within weeks of their previous bout.

I think it varies so much it’s fairly impossible to know for certain. Especially when you factor that immunity from one variant doesn’t necessarily mean immunity from other variants.

LoganberryJam · 24/03/2022 04:11

Someone I know has got it now, 6 weeks after last having it. I think if you had it a wee ago you should be pretty safe though!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/03/2022 06:03

I had Covid in August and haven't had it since, DS the same. We've both been around Covid positive people, there's been a few in DS's class.

hunder · 24/03/2022 06:11

I work in a school and we are seeing some re-infections as soon as 4 weeks after a positive. We are now getting children on their 3rd bout of Covid, whilst others have never tested positive!

neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 06:56

A lot of kids caught it in December. Loads caught it again in March.

neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 06:57

I think 3 months from the children in my class.

OliveTree75 · 24/03/2022 07:29

A few in my class have had it twice a month or two apart. I had it last March and haven’t caught it again despite having so much close contact and most of my class having it twice since then

Jules912 · 24/03/2022 08:51

DD had it in January. I assume that's why she was the only one in our household not to catch it when DS brought it home two weeks ago.

Really? To me I would think they are maybe having symptoms of a cold and testing positive to a prior infection.
Whatalovelydaffodil · 24/03/2022 08:53

4 weeks

neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 08:54

Highly unlikely to be a different infection imo in that space of time. I'm no doctor though.
I have children and they had it end Jan and they haven't caught it from me despite not isolating. I currently have covid.

My doctor said from what they're seeing about a month.

GD12 · 24/03/2022 11:31

Read a paper yesterday and the gist of it was that a mild infection of Omicron doesn't produce very high antibodies, even less in unvaccinated people.BA.2 is also different to original Omicron so it will evade the immune system to an extent of people that got it in Jan. I've a horrible feeling wer re going to go around in circles every few months with infections now. Hopefully we don't get a more severe variant again.

JS87 · 24/03/2022 12:07

**Really? To me I would think they are maybe having symptoms of a cold and testing positive to a prior infection.

DS had it four weeks after an infection in February. It was definitely covid again as I caught it from him the second time. I think he had both omicron variants and was unlucky to be exposed four weeks apart to them both.

JS87 · 24/03/2022 12:09

I think it’s hard to know how long immunity to a particular variant lasts as the variant seems to change so quickly that most people who get it again tend to have a different variant each time.

ButterflyBitch · 24/03/2022 12:18

I had covid in oct 2020 and have never had it again. Been triple vaxxed since then. Think I’ve got super immunity as I’ve had numerous contacts with positive cases.

TempNameChangexx · 24/03/2022 12:31

Surely it depends which variant you had and which variant you've just been exposed to
It's possible to have two variants at the same time apparently....

Kab3042 · 24/03/2022 13:21

Dd had it twice within 4-5 weeks.

4 weeks fair enough..but 2 weeks? Well that was the comment I was referring to.
neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 14:30

There is 3 variants.
Omicron original
Omicron Ba2 [ or the stealth variant]
Deltacron. [ Not so widespread for now]

neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 14:31

Sorry there are 3 variants. Grammar error!

BirdOnTheWire · 24/03/2022 14:32

I wonder whether the protection varies according to how symptomatic you were?
Has anyone who was seriously ill got it twice?
Boris springs to mind, very sick with covid 2 years ago and must have had multiple exposures since but not been re-infected.

neveradullmoment99 · 24/03/2022 14:34

Not sure how much Delta persists now.
