Should I be phoning into work sick

I came down with a sore throat yesterday. It wasn't even very sore. It was tender. That's all it was.

I had a close contact just at the end of last week and on Monday. I can only presume what I had is the onset of covid because I wasn't doing any other mixing in crowds and I wasn't around anyone else who has colds or who are sick. I am testing negative on lft. I don't have a fever. I can't recognise any other symptoms.

I have a blood pressure wrist band that tracks the blood pressure and for the first night ever it registered some higher readings over night. It's was always low except for last night it was raised during the night.

I can only presume this is the onset of covid but it's not registering on lft.

My throat is so much more sore today. My throat is not great.

Should I be phoning in sick and staying at home?

If you feel unwell enough not to go to work anyway you should call in sick. The covid is a separate issue.

Covid regs say if you test neg you go to work. (In fact I think they've even scrapped that now ?) You need to check

I would do another test

GeneLovesJezebel · 17/03/2022 08:50

There are lots of non-covid colds going round, to be expected now we’re not wearing masks.
If you’re well enough to go to work I’d be going in.

RedTangerine · 17/03/2022 08:51

Family of mine had the same situation with sore throat and tested positive for covid a few days later...

Lazypuppy · 17/03/2022 08:54

If you are too ill to work, you call in sick,if not go to work.

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2022 08:56

Without the covid worry, would you be going in? There are a lot of sore throats around that aren’t covid.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/03/2022 08:57

If you don’t feel ill, and you’re not testing positive, go to work.

mummyh2016 · 17/03/2022 08:58

Not to be goady or anything but it is possible to be ill without it being Covid. I had a horrendous sore throat last week, it felt the same sort of pain like when you have tonsillitis but without the lack of energy you get with that. I tested negative. I could've gone into work and probably would've if wasn't currently on maternity leave.

Canyoujustgotobedplease · 17/03/2022 11:10

I have had a sore throat since Monday evening and tested negative until this morning when it's positive.
It could definitely be the onset of covid but go to work as usual unless you feel too ill to work

My sore throat hit me Tuesday night. The throat is worse today. I tested negative on lft. I'm not going into work or going anywhere near people for the next few more days til I know what I am looking at.

Whatever I do have, whether it's covid or not, it's not fair passing it on.

It took me 4 days to test positive on lft. I had sore throat as the first symptom followed by headache and coughing.

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2022 11:38

What do your work think of that?

fadingfast · 17/03/2022 12:41

Have you tested your tonsils or just a nose swab? I think it can be picked up earlier in the throat than in the nose only.

DuckyNoMates · 17/03/2022 12:48

If you are too sick to work then phone in sick or follow your works covid policy if you have a positive lft. If not then go to work.

SummersBreeze · 17/03/2022 13:33

I only have the nose lft. I used a test this morning and I remember reading that the throat swab picks it up quicker. I used the swab back my mouth. I went as far back as possible and then I went up both nostrils. Negative. I used a flashlight behind the disc too, to see if a light would pick up a line better. Very clear negative.

If you’re ill, phone in sick.
If you have a positive covid test, phone in sick.

My whole family have covid this week except me. I have a sore throat, but negative on LFD tests. I am still expected at work teaching classes of 30.

BobblyBlueJumper · 17/03/2022 13:44

Same symptoms here and took 4 days for a positive to show up, I went to work on Monday as lft negative, Tuesday morning it was positive.

What can you do, really?

SummersBreeze · 17/03/2022 13:49

I suspect what I have is covid but time will tell. I also suspect this is how I was exposed. A girl I work with had a cold last week. She was testing negative on lfts and continued going to work and then eventually she tested positive at home and had a faint line.

So no, I won't be going to work.

I'm too tired so I decided not to bother phoning and I just didn't show up. I will phone another day when I am up to it.

I have phelym at the back of my mouth and that's dripping down so if anyone in work has a problem with me I will gladly cough my dose at anyone who's begging for it.

SoftPillow · 17/03/2022 13:54

You're so tired that you're unable to pick up the phone and tell work that you aren't coming in?

Yet you're well enough, and awake enough m, to be posting on Mumsnet.

You realise you're concocting a narrative to suit your own argument don't you.

A sore throat doesn't mean you have Covid. A sore throat and no other symptoms and a negative LFT...get yourself to work and stop shirking your responsibilities.

Not calling in sick, I'd put you on a disciplinary, it's a basic requirements to call in sick.

Don’t go for ‘Employee of the year,’ will you?

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2022 13:56

What kind of workplace is it that this is ok? Confused

PurpleDaisies · 17/03/2022 13:56

Totally unprofessional behaviour.

OrlandointheWilderness · 17/03/2022 13:58

What?! Where do you work where they would be okay with this!
If the test is negative it's negative.

Canyoujustgotobedplease · 17/03/2022 14:42

From your updates it sounds like you just didn't want to go to work so was hoping it was covid
Really unprofessional and disrespectful to just not show up, I hope you won't need a reference from them any time soon.

Jules912 · 17/03/2022 15:30

I have Covid and am too sick to work even though I can do it from home. I texted rather than phoned as I couldn't talk without coughing and my boss was ok with that. I would expect to be disciplined for just not turning up unless I was in the hospital!

DuckyNoMates · 17/03/2022 17:04
