Catching it twice

Hello!

I've had a scanned the forum but can't see a similar question - apologies in advance if it gets asked a lot.

My DS x2 got Covid in Dec (early in Dec, so not sure if Omicron). Their dad has just tested positive - I'm curious if people have found those who had it in this wave are being reinfected?

I know it's like asking how long is a piece of string!

I’ve just caught it for the second time only 4 weeks apart. I am much more unwell this time around though- I’m wondering if my first positive was a false positive (I tested negative on day 5) or if it’s a different strain.

Teaforme23 · 03/03/2022 20:09

My DD tested positive end of November she's now got it again. She tested positive last night so we're waiting to see if it happens again to the rest of us.

I know 2 sets of people who've caught it twice in a similar time frame. None of them were worse second time than 1st and we're not badly affected 1st time round.

Thanks!

Seems typically covidy in that it's inconsistent and chaotic and there is no straight answer.

I guess what it's done has made my mind up about how much testing to do. Which is that I'll up the testing.

How can you tell you're not just still testing positive and have a different bug now?

Dd had it in December 2021 and then again a month later in jan 2022 5 weeks in between.

The first time she caught off me or her dad (we both had it). She tested positive but had no symptoms at all.

The second time there was a massive outbreak in her class and she tested positive again with mild cold symptoms and sore eyes! The rest of us did not catch it off Dd again in jan. Dd was just unfortunate, after getting it the first time she was exposed to 20 off school friends that tested positive.

It can go either way.

I believe dd had it in early 2020 too which might explain why she and very minimal symptoms more recently!

forlornlorna · 03/03/2022 20:28

I had in twice exactly 12 weeks apart 😫

Meltinthemiddle · 03/03/2022 21:26

I'm now worried about this! I had covid 3 weeks ago. Dh now has it I really don't want to get it again 😭

Exactly what has happened to me but 2 nnonths apart.
HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/03/2022 21:30

12 Yr old DD caught it in September be for she had her vax and she was really poorly, high temp, muscle pains etc. She caught it from me in February and was fine just tired and she'd had 1 vax, so whether that helped or the strain symptoms being less serious or a combo I don't know.

Stressedmummyof4 · 04/03/2022 08:47

Our family all had it at the beginning of December, we went for PCR as I want feeling well and we were all positive on 1st December. The primary school seem to be getting hit bad over the past fortnight and my little boy has tested positive on lft on Wednesday followed by another sibling last night, it's impossible to separate from them sure to SEN so it looks like it's going round our house again more or less exactly 3 months from the first time! First time round it was myself who showed most symptoms, I spend a full 14 days unwell on the couch miserable. This time though my son who had no symptoms last time is running a fever, sore throat, no voice, vomiting it's really different this time so I'm assuming a different strain.

worriedatthemoment · 04/03/2022 11:11

Im wondering how those who say twice in 4/6/8 weeks etc know its covid as we have been told pcr can show positive and were originally told the same about the lft as well
So how can we know if second bug isn't a cold etc ? Did you have second pcr ? Or relying on LFt showing ??

EducatingArti · 04/03/2022 13:26

Well my experience was - first Covid over Christmas. Had a mild cough so got PCR. Tested positive. Did several LFT tests but they were all negative throughout.
Jan/Feb working with children so doing random LFTs which were all negative.
Last Friday, seeing a friend who is quite anxious about Covid so did a LFT to reassure her. It was faintly positive.
Last Saturday. Started with cold type symptoms and have had strong LFT positives ever since.
It is possible I suppose that my Christmas bout was a false positive on PCR but I think it is more likely that Christmas=Delta variant so extremely mild as vaccines gave fairly good protection and it was only a month since booster.
This time=Omicron variant as more symptoms as vaccines give reduced protection although still useful at preventing severe disease.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 04/03/2022 18:23

@fungussingstheblues because I had multiple negative tests in between the two illnesses. I had a positive PCR this week. Family and I (we had all been away together) all tested positive this week. My mum is in hospital. It’s definitely covid.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 04/03/2022 18:26

@fungussingstheblues I’m instead questioning whether I actually had covid the first time around and wondering whether I had a false negative or just a very mild dose. I did feel ill but I was in the first trimester of pregnancy.

We had covid approx 13th dec. then covid again mid January. Most probably delta then omricon. My colleague had covid end of December and didn’t catch covid from me despite being exposed. She probably had omricon as after Xmas it omricon was the dominant and prevalent strain in most areas. We just had bad luck!
PurpleDaisies · 05/03/2022 09:50

I had it four months ago and have it again now. I felt awful last time. This time I just have a sore throat and a headache.

Blackopal · 05/03/2022 10:00

Caught it in September and again in January.

First time it really knocked me about, second time rough but could have carried on at work etc.

First time one of my children did not get it but the second time all were positive.

KimCheese · 05/03/2022 10:56

Thanks. I'm torn as to what to do as we're separated and they're due to go to his tonight. If we were together, they'd be exposed to it by default. They were at his while he was incubating it before testing positive.

jazzandh · 05/03/2022 11:53

My 11yo has just tested positive for 2nd time. First time 11 December.

I assume first time was delta and 2nd time omicron.

I would assume that most people with it now have Omicron and thus it is likely your children will be susceptible to reinfection.

The rest of our family who are all fully jabbed have not caught it on either occasion.

jazzandh · 05/03/2022 11:56

How many days into covid is their Dad? The first 5 days including prior to symptoms are supposed to be the most contagious. After that I would say fairly low.

worriedatthemoment · 05/03/2022 12:05

@Wedonttalkaboutboris what multiple negative PCR or LFT
I had negative LFT the whole time I had covid
Things is originally we were told not to test for 90 days by lft or pcr now it seems to of changed
I have a cold now , is it covid ? Who knows , LFT are negative , I don't qualify for pcr but it could be positive anyway as I only had covid 4/5 weeks ago
If we can catch if that soon then i can't see point of isolating etc as if we get no immunity we could get 5/6 times a year and people cannit be off work that many times or kids off school
I read up on colds earlier an dlatest articles talk about isolating now with a cold but then saying you can be contagious for 2 weeks even after symptoms have gone and also before you know
Its not possible to isolate for all these things

KimCheese · 05/03/2022 16:32

He tested on Thurs, but likely picked it up at the weekend and up to Monday as he was away. So incubating from then but tested on Thurs as one of the party said they were feeling rough. Really weak LFT today after strong lfts before.

TBH this is a bit of a mental health v covid risk choice. I'm quite frazzled as it is and need a break.

I had covid in early December. I was proper poorly - absolutely floored me and I still felt crap even after Christmas. I tested positive again mid Feb. So barely two months apart. Much milder second time around. (assuming Omicron this time). Double jabbed and booster mid Jan.

People are amazed I've had it twice in such a short timeframe. Personally I think my immune system took such a battering from the first bout that i didn't stand a chance with so much omicron being around.
