Undecided about second dose (for teens)

My two DDs are due their second dose of Pfizer next week, and I am in two minds. It's ultimately their decision, of course, but they will look to me for guidance.

I wasn't sure about getting them jabbed in the first place, but when Omicron came along with all its unknowns on how kids would be affected and our fears of infecting grandparents, we made the decision together to go ahead.

Reasons against getting second dose:

  • The second dose carries the most risk of myocarditis etc
  • The threat of Omicron is not as great as it seemed
  • Grandparents are now triple jabbed and about to get another booster

Reasons for:

  • It might help protect against a worse variant in future
  • It might make travel difficult if they have not had both doses.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Thank you.

So why's the infection rate per 100,000 like this?

🤦

Have you read the report that graph has come from, or just copied and pasted it from a telegram VACCINES DON'T WORK blog?

If you bother to do this, you will get a decent explanation as to the reasons case rates differ between different groups and why an association doesn't mean x is causing y.

It's very very basic epidemiology - correlation doesn't equal causation, confounding, assessing bias etc, that people have been explaining everytime yet another one of these claims is made.

Unless they had a previous bad reaction to a vaccine, then i dont see any reason not to. Even Omicrom is supposed to be pretty grim even if you dont die from it. I think youre overthinking it. The vaccine programme is our best protection against getting seriously ill

I don't think that's true at all. Everyone I know who had omicron (well covid during omicron) had golf like symptoms or was asymptomatic.

I know several unvaccinated teens who had omicron very mildly (like a mild cold)!

Sorry cold (not golf)

@emmag1925
I’m just stating what I was told by the doctors (paediatrician, several drs at a &e as we went there several times and neurologist/neurosurgeon). Each of them have told me that there are other cases like my dd who have the exact same side effects after receiving the vaccine. She developed them five days after. I’m not trying to put anyone off having the vaccine. Infact I have had both of them and the booster. I just wanted people to know there are rare cases like this.

Plenty of children are getting omicron in our school and they’re the illest they’ve been for a long time. Who knows what long term damage it is doing to them.

They must be very unlucky!

Yes. But my point is, that it isn’t a walk in the park. Plus, over 12s would have had a chance for a jab? These are primary school kids I’m talking about which don’t yet?
