Anyone work at a walk in vax centre (not bookable one)

Hi

I'm after getting my ds his second dose at 8 weeks (hes 16) instead of 12 weeks.

GP won't get involved in vaccinations even though online says they can be offered it at 8 weeks for non-essential travel reasons (this meets this criteria).

Do walk in centres have access to your previous vax records (i know they can't see covid test record)?

Has anyone find a way round this?

Online says they can have it but says speak to nurse or doctor - they won't get involved and just say go online to book but online defaults to 12 weeks?

thanks

Yes, as soon as they put your details into the computer the previous dose is there and it will flash up red if it is too soon.
You might find the odd vaccine centre that will overlook it but we certainly wouldn't.

Cookerhood · 14/02/2022 19:07

We would do it with a letter from the GP btw, but not otherwise.

Wigeon · 14/02/2022 19:13

Assuming you are in England, you can have it at 8 weeks if your DC is clinically vulnerable or lives with some who is immunocompromised but otherwise it’s 12 weeks. Travel reasons aren’t a legitimate reason - where have you seen this online?

And yes, they can see his previous vaccination record and won’t give it to you before 12 weeks unless one of the reasons above applies.

Wigeon · 14/02/2022 19:14

(By the way, there aren’t separate walk in centres and bookable centres - many do a mix - and they should all be following exactly the same rules - it wouldn’t be fair if you got a different service if you pre booked rather than walked in).

Wellbythebloodyhell · 14/02/2022 19:17

Of course any vaccination centre can access your medical records to see when previous vaccinations were given they don't just rely on the patients word for it Confused

Cookerhood · 14/02/2022 19:23

We only access the GP name & address & Covid vaccination record (& it shows the flu vaccine too), btw, in case anyone is worried. I frequently have people asking me to correct the address on their records, which I can't do.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 14/02/2022 19:24

Fwiw, at the vaccine centre I work with patients have still been turned away even with a GP letter for early vaccine if the reason stated was for any travel purposes. Vaccines are strictly only given before 12 weeks (in 12-17) if the DC is CEV or lives with someone who is immuno suppressed (not CEV) or for medical purposes such as the DC was needing some other form of treatment that meant the vaccine needed to be given at a certain time to not Interfere with treatment

Cookerhood · 14/02/2022 20:00

I agree, I should have said a GP letter stating medical reasons.

Watapalava · 14/02/2022 20:02

It says specify ally that non essential travel is a valid reason

Do you guys work in vax centres? Only both my dc had their first vaccine at 28 days post covid (in dec so after the change in rule) - no one questioned it at the centre so I wandered if they couldn’t ‘see’ it

Which is why I asked if they could see the first vax as they defo couldnt see the pcr?

It’s just so annoying given the entire world ha as 3 week gap and uk is only one that doesn’t

I know so many who have had their second dose at GP from 8 weeks too only my GP doesn’t do vax

They wouldn't see the PCR result - as I said above all they can see is the vaccine records for flu & covid.
Yes, I work in a vaccine centre as a volunteer vaccinator.

Where does it say non essential travel is a valid reason? I don’t work in a vax centre but I am very familiar with the guidance for professional reasons.
Wigeon · 14/02/2022 20:09

They can’t see evidence of previous covid infection but they can see previous vaccines.

I do work in a vaccine centre, as @Cookerhood states we can see vaccine records and other basic info

Cookerhood · 14/02/2022 20:11

The Green book chapter 14a (the vaccination "bible" states
"For those under 18 who are not in a high risk group a 12 week interval is preferred. This is based on precautionary advice from the JCVI based on emerging evidence of a lower rate of myocarditis in countries that use schedules of 8 to 12 weeks. The intervals may be
shortened to eight weeks in periods of high incidence or where there is concern aboutvaccine effectiveness (for example a new variant).
The main exception to the eight week lower interval would be those about to commence immunosuppressive treatment. In these individuals, the minimal intervals outlined below may be
followed to enable the vaccine to be given whilst their immune system is better able to respond."
(below it states a minimum of 21 days).
There is no mention in the Green book of non essential travel, I'm not sure where you saw this?
It does say that those who fall into an at risk gourp or live with
immunosupressed indiviuals should have the secind dose after 8 weeks.

bananaramadramas · 14/02/2022 20:12

I had my second dose early. I was told to go near the end of the day and they would give out any doses that would get wasted.

Cookerhood · 14/02/2022 20:13

It says "essential travel", not non essential travel:
There may be other reasons for having the second dose even sooner, after 8 weeks.
These reasons include:
if you are considered to be ‘at risk’ and have not yet had your second dose
if you live with someone who is considered at risk and you want to help protect them
if your circumstances, such as work or essential travel, require a second dose

feathermucker · 14/02/2022 20:14

It says the dose may be given sooner for work or essential travel reasons.

Wigeon · 14/02/2022 20:14

That link says ESSENTIAL travel is a possible reason, not NON essential. It says 16-17 yr olds can get a dose after 8 weeks:

“ if your circumstances, such as work or essential travel, require a second dose”

Essential travel is like to mean things like: attend a funeral, visit a dying relative. Not go on holiday.

User3456 · 14/02/2022 20:14

It says essential travel is a valid reason OP, not non essential travel Sorry :-(

vastgrandupgrade · 14/02/2022 20:14

That link says essential travel, not non-essential

Choux · 14/02/2022 20:15
No it says ESSENTIAL travel is a reason. It says nothing about non essential travel like holidays.

Watapalava · 14/02/2022 20:15

Sorry I mean essential travel which this is

I worded it wrong in Italy but either way who decides as GP won’t discuss it

I had my second dose early. I was told to go near the end of the day and they would give out any doses that would get wasted.
Last summer we were doing them early, but not any more. It's also different for children where there is a slightly higher risk of myocarditis which seems to be reduced by spacing them out.
