4 weeks post covid, I feel like I did when I had concussion - what is this madness?

A few years ago I had a nasty concussion, recovery took about 6 weeks. I’d feel fine, but any sort of brain task (adding numbers, trying to work something out, anything that took brain power) wiped me out and I’d have to sleep.

I feel the same now after covid.
I’d say my energy levels are nearing normal, my breathing is improving daily, but I’m still struggling with any brain work - I’m forgetful (more than normal), have almost complete blanks about some things I’ve done in the last few weeks, and if I do anything remotely taxing I need to sleep within minutes.

Is this normal? Does it go?

Speak to your GP, just ask is it normal to be like this post virus. Hope you feel better soon.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 06/02/2022 22:30

There has been some research to suggest that long covid / post covid symptons are very similar to B12 deficiency including forgetfulness etc. I would contact your GP but also perhaps look at a multivitamin with B12/folate.

sausagerole · 06/02/2022 22:34

There is quite alot of evidence that Covid can cause cognitive impairment - I don't say that to worry you, only that it's quite well documented now.

I'd have a look online at the research and go to your GP and see what they advise

LovejoysVase · 06/02/2022 22:51

Thank you.
I’m ringing the gp tomorrow anyway, but thought others may have had similar.

It's not unusual to be like this after a bout of COVID worse luck, esp for women or maybe they just talk about it more. I found it passed within 6 weeks or so (unlike other symptoms which I'm still suffering from nearly 2 years later).

blyn72 · 06/02/2022 23:26

It's early days, Lovejoys, it can take a while to fully recover but you will get there.

wildthingsinthenight · 06/02/2022 23:30

I am coming up to 2 years since I had Covid. I have Long Covid and have terrible brain fog and forgetfulness. Also dizziness.
I would speak to your gp. Mine put me on HRT and wanted to see if that helped any of my LC symptoms. It didn't.

I've put this on another post but I'm at 5 weeks now and really suffering with bad headaches (which I don't normally get) plus brain fog and dizziness/and feeling disorientated.
It's all made me feel really uneasy and nervous today.

dahliaaa · 06/02/2022 23:34

Ps if you are speaking to your gp tomorrow it would be really useful to know what they say if you don't mind sharing

LovejoysVase · 06/02/2022 23:53

Porcupine and Wildthings I’m so sorry you’re still suffering! Is there anything that helps?

@dahliaaa yes of course.

@LovejoysVase

Porcupine and Wildthings I’m so sorry you’re still suffering! Is there anything that helps?

@dahliaaa yes of course.

Only total rest and painkillers . Basically barely doing anything physical. My worst symptom is body pain and nerve pain in feet and hands. I'm unsteady on my feet some days. Gp now saying fibromyalgia as it has gone on so long but I'm not so sure. They don't know what to do with us LCers!
LovejoysVase · 07/02/2022 15:47

@wildthingsinthenight that sounds rubbish, and so debilitating ☹️

@dahliaaa I spoke to the gp, it’s a waiting game apparently. As my other symptoms are clearing they suspect this will too, but to rest and not overdo things.

@LovejoysVase thank you for reporting back. (Not that it's much use to you - I guess there's not a huge amount they can say at this stage.) I've got horrible headache again today - I'm getting it every day - plus feel quite dizzy. Feel quite weepy today too - although I suppose that's understandable when it's gone on a while. I can't imagine having a clear head ever again and feeling normal !

Thanks to everyone who is struggling and particularly those of you who have been affected for such long periods of time.

LovejoysVase · 07/02/2022 17:04

@dahliaaa I so hope it improves very soon 💐

Porcupineintherough · 07/02/2022 17:14

@LovejoysVase my symptoms were mostly neurological and magnesium and vit b12 may have helped (I've tried lots of stuff so hard to know what did actually work) but what's helped most is time.

dahliaaa · 07/02/2022 19:40

@Porcupineintherough do you mind if ask you more about your symptoms.
Mine sells much more neurological based but there doesn't seem to be as much written about this.

Porcupineintherough · 07/02/2022 22:39

@dahliaaa no you are welcome to ask.

I say my symptoms are neurological because that's what I think. It is possible that I am wrong.

Since I first got COVID my skin and other epithelial linings (nose, mouth, throat, lungs) from the waist up have burned. Not painful exactly, the sensation is definitely that of heat - like light sunburn. And not all the time or all at once. So I get a few 8 hour periods of burning mouth and tongue, then a few days of burning skin on my upper back and arms, then a few days of burning lungs. All very mild now compared to what it once was but it has never stopped.

I also get internal tremors on something like an 8 week cycle and pins and needles in my hands most evenings.

Any questions please ask.

dahliaaa · 07/02/2022 23:44

@Porcupineintherough you poor thing. Sounds awful - glad things are improving even if not fully resolved yet.
Thank you for explaining.
My ongoing symptoms seems to be based around headaches and dizziness at the moment so really interested in the neurological side.

dahliaaa · 15/02/2022 20:05

@LovejoysVase hi - just wondered how you are getting on ?

LovejoysVase · 15/02/2022 20:16

Still slowly improving.
I’m up to 3 or 4 normal days in a row now, then need a couple of days where I mostly sleep. I’m still more woolly headed than normal, but I think it’s getting better.

Breathing is also much better.

Thank you for asking 💐

How are you getting on?

OP posts:
dahliaaa · 15/02/2022 20:55

@LovejoysVase great to hear that things are improving for you.
I had a couple of days where the headaches were better but today very painful again. I'm hoping that the couple of days were a good sign though :-)

Starrr123 · 20/02/2022 23:03

@Porcupineintherough hi! Ive had EXACTLY the same as you since covid! Nerve pain in my face and ear too! Have the dr suggested whT to give yoh to help? Xx

Mossstitch · 21/02/2022 19:29

@dahliaaa have you tried ibruprophen for the headaches rather than paracetamol? I would always use paracetamol for a headache before long covid, not that I had many, so took me quite a while to discover ibruprophen worked better for what I call my covid headache which feels different and comes on when over exert. I'd presume because it's inflammation the anti inflammatory works better, I only have to take one now (nearly two years since I had covid as before first lockdown), seems to take a couple of hours and it subsides. I personally think a lot of the post covid/long covid symptoms are caused by inflammation. It will improve but it is very, very slow to do so. You learn to mange the symptoms. I also had the burning in all mucous membranes from nose to chest, like you'd breathed in chilli powder but does all improve over time...... 💐

dahliaaa · 21/02/2022 19:52

Thanks for the message @Mossstitch - I think you're right about inflammation. I'll try ibuprofen.
