Is the pandemic finally over for good? I really can't see it getting worse again now Or am I naive?

Tell that to the people who lost family member to Covid when they had underlying conditions which wouldn't have shortened their lives if it is as t for Covid. I feel they would consider it an insult. www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/28/ons-debunks-spurious-covid-deaths-claim-shared-by-david-davis

Of course it's not over. Boris trying to pretend it is to protect big business just proves to me that he's a fucking idiot with little to no regard for the NHS nor the people who he is supposed to represent. Gets my goat.

It’s over in the sense it’s unlikely to cause severe disruptions to daily life.

Will we get covid again and again? Yeah we will just like colds. Seriously though it’s the worst question to ask on mumsnet it gets the covid lovers frothing at the mouth with excitement at how they can prove you wrong that it’s NOT over because they happen to have covid. I mean fancy having a common cold in the month of January.

Because let’s face it that’s what omicron is.

You haven't a clue what the next iteration of CV will be or even if there will be one, hopefully milder but we will have to wait and see.

Yeah right Confused

HariboMaroon · 29/01/2022 20:29

@Alexandra2001

It’s looking likely it will be milder from the scientific literature I’ve read. Sorry to disappoint you.

Of COURSE we could get another variant. We COULD also get a completely new novel virus which results in an entirely new pandemic.

But as it currently stands things are looking good and anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that. Immunity is high and restrictions are low for the foreseeable.

It’s over in that sense.

HariboMaroon · 29/01/2022 20:32

@GlacindaTheTroll

Omicron is milder is it not? I mean to dramatically respond with “yeah right” like we’re back in april/may 2020 is quite unbelievable.

SORRY folks… it’s over!! Maybe find a new hobby, I hear climate change will be a good avenue for you all to explore with hysteria.

HeartTerriers · 29/01/2022 20:34

Imo yes, it is over or our extreme reaction to it is. People will still get it but we will no longer stop our lives, education and society to try to prevent people getting it. TF.

i'll leave it there, i think you ve made your point, badly.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 29/01/2022 20:41

There's no reason to expect it to be milder.

There is no evolutionary pressure for a virus which is transmissible before symptoms to change severity of disease produced, npbecause it will have moved on before it makes its host sick (or dead)

So it'll be utterly random whether it is more or less severe.

Because evolutionary pressure will favour those which best evade immunity, or infect better (people with fewer ACE-2 receptors, such as women and DC ). Nothing to do with his severe the disease pattern is

Covid is not a common cold.

It might be a milder form of covid but it's not a common cold

The ignorance of some posters is staggering. Or if not ignorance, then it's wilful misrepresentation , which is even worse

It's more to protect small business. The big businesses are the ones who did well out of the lockdowns whilst small businesses were left to struggle and often close down. Small firms like pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, and freelancers such as actors, stage crew, etc have been screwed due to the lockdowns and restrictions. Amazon etc, i.e. "big business" have profited massively.

Completely agree, its almost as if one cannot be concerned about certain new mutations but also happy Omicron is milder, without someone accusing you off being a Covid lover or similar.

ATM scientists simply do not know and as i said earlier, its logistically not possible to vaccinate our way out of this each and every autumn.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 29/01/2022 21:07

Be nice if it was OP, but no I don't think so at all.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 29/01/2022 21:11

It’s over when people decide it’s over. There cannot be a medical / scientific end to the pandemic, only a social / political one.

Notanewusertool · 29/01/2022 21:12

Well lockdowns definitely are because no-one is going to obey in future. Boris & co have basically told anyone who has been obeying the rules up to now a laughable idiot. Did you see all those Tory MPs laughing their heads off the other day that anyone would be bothered about a few drinks / parties /cakes, just because it was against the covid rules at the time? Given our leaders think the whole thing is a joke, and laugh at anyone who takes it seriously, yes, the pandemic is over. Even though people are dying. It's what Boris would want.

BewareTheLibrarians · 29/01/2022 21:23

Surely the other way round?

“Pandemic” means “a disease prevalent over a whole country/the world”. It doesn’t mean “the response to a disease”.

Politics and social change can’t “decide” when the pandemic will end, although vaccines and mitigations (medical/scientific interventions) will help it along its way.

If you’d said “the pandemic response” will be over when people decide it is, then that’s another point and fair enough.

It would be helpful to use words correctly to avoid confusion/irate ranting from people who think you mean pandemic when you actually mean pandemic response.

Well it isn't over ,but I agree we have very few if any restrictions and I don't think they will be brought back unless something major happens
We are living with it now COVID isn't going away ,but vaccinees have been a game changer .

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 29/01/2022 21:38

Find it interesting when people say well everyone is vaccinated
I looked up the stats in my city and they're low I guess. 30% haven't had 2 vaccines, and 53% haven't had a booster

Have they been offered them though ?,some people will choose not to have any vaccines which I can't understand personally but we can't force vaccines on people ,we can only offer them .
