DS and I have identical symptoms, he is positive and I'm not?

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

DS(5) has tested positive. He has lots of positive contacts in his class and was complaining of a sore throat on Monday morning so I tested him. He has complained of a slight sore head at times but mostly it's been a scratchy throat

I have identical symptoms, sore throat and intermittent headache but have tested negative every day since Monday. If we weren't testing I'd swear we both had the same (mild) bug.

I don't know whether to book a PCR as I haven't got the any of the classic symptoms and don't meet any of the other criteria?

I'm at home anyway with DS but it's just for doing the shopping etc.

I think your immune system is coping better, so is keeping the viral shred less from your upper respiratory tract. Thus the negative tests.

greenlynx · 27/01/2022 08:07

Are you vaccinated? Obviously he’s not so maybe that’s the difference.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2022 08:08

I have the same but I wonder if it's too early and I will test positive in a day or two.

Forfamily123 · 27/01/2022 08:08

Are you doing a nose swab or nose and throat? It’s worth trying a throat one first.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 27/01/2022 08:10

Book a PCR or just self isolate for 5 days
You almost certainly have it so it's up to you if you want the faff of a PCR with test and trace or just assume you do

Jumpingintomenopause · 27/01/2022 08:12

This happened to me. DD1 symptoms day one DD2 and I symptoms day two. Both DD’s had +LF tests, I had negative. All PCR tested on day three, all results +. My LF was not showing + until day six.

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 08:14

I'm triple vaccinated yes and also tested positive (in hospital) at the start of October.

We only have the newer style short sticks for noses - can you just stick them down your throat too? I've never thought of that.

We're basically isolating anyway as I'm at home with DS and a newborn (also poorly) but my sister's car is in for repair and she's asked for a lift tonight. Just not too sure how much of a risk I am going out and about.

greenlynx · 27/01/2022 08:48

I would presume that you’ve got it for the purpose of lift and tell your sister that. I wouldn’t tell her about the same symptoms, I would tell her that you’ve tested positive. If she still wants that lift after that….wear a mask, open window and give her a lift. It would be her choice.

BrunoNoNoNo · 27/01/2022 08:53

I didn't get a positive on the flowflex tests (the nose stick ones) only the original ones where you do your throat too. I think the original ones are more sensitive.

BrunoNoNoNo · 27/01/2022 08:55

In your case I'd be getting a PCR though.

Magicandspiders · 27/01/2022 08:57

Get a PCR

Salamander91 · 27/01/2022 08:59

This happened to me in December. It was over the christmas holidays so I just self isolated with DS. I tested negative the whole time on multiple lfts and two pcrs 🤷‍♀️ I still have no idea if I had covid or not.

AlexaShutUp · 27/01/2022 09:00

Get a pcr or behave as if you tested positive.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 27/01/2022 09:18

You need to book a pcr test if you have symptoms but the lateral flow is showing as negative. You obviously have covid if your son has it and you have the same symptoms. My son had symptoms but was showing as negative on lateral flow so I booked him a pcr test and that came back as positive.

Picklesandbeans · 27/01/2022 09:26

My dh has same symptoms as the rest of us- all positive, hes isolating (wfh anyway) as if he has it

Picklesandbeans · 27/01/2022 09:27

I should add I had 'a bad cold' negative pcr Monday- exactly same symptoms as my colleague who was positive on lft. It took another 2 days for me to be faintly positive.

DaffodilSunshine · 27/01/2022 09:27

You can do the nose only ones as nose and throat instead. It's just slightly more awkward doing the throat with a short stick

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2022 09:28

I have never tested positive on an LFT but currently have Covid, positive on a PCR.

BabyInTheJungle · 27/01/2022 09:32

Thanks all. I agree I should act as though I'm positive. Even if it's not covid I don't want to pass on my sore throat to anyone!

My sister has managed to get someone else to give her a lift to the garage - phew! So it's another day at home for us. Smile

Have you had any positive test yet?

We're in a similar situation.

altmember · 28/01/2022 23:03

In my experience, PCR tests have been less reliable than everyone's been led to believe (I've seen figures of up to 30% false negative suggested). I've known a few people who've had negative PCR after positive lft (and strong symptoms and other positive household members).

So even if you get a negative PCR as well, I'd doubt that. What are the chances of the two of you having a different bug at the same time, with similar symptoms?

delilahbucket · 28/01/2022 23:09

Same here. I've just avoided people for a week just to be on the safe side. I'm triple vaxed, DS had just had one dose (had his second booked when he caught it - typical).

delilahbucket · 28/01/2022 23:10

Saying all that, I've had sneezing and a runny nose for four weeks now, so who knows 🤷

MadisonAvenue · 28/01/2022 23:26

I’ve tested positive on Flowflex by doing a nasal swab. My husband has a sore throat, which I don’t have, along with similar symptoms to me and was getting negatives by just doing his nose. He swabbed his throat with the short Flowflex stick and almost immediately got a strong positive.

BabyInTheJungle · 29/01/2022 08:13

I'm still testing negative but awaiting my PCR results from yesterday. DS is as fit as a fiddle and leaping around the house like a caged animal whereas I'm feeling absolutely rotten...

I had a false negative PCR last year, as I was ill with sore throat etc and tested negative on a PCR then was admitted to hospital a few weeks later and tested positive with a trace of virus they said was likely leaving my body from a few weeks previously Hmm
