Everything tastes of rotten eggs… long covid?

My dd had covid 10 weeks ago and over the last two weeks has been complaining that her food tastes different. We have obviously been doing lots of tests to rule out another bout of covid. I’m now wondering if it could be a delayed reaction of her original infection? It has got the the stage of everything savoury tasting of rotten eggs (including her beloved crisps!). Anyone else experienced this?

I suffered with this but only when I actually had Covid. 10 weeks seems a long time to me for this to start but it will be interesting to see what others say. If you have only tested on an LFT there is a good chance she could have Covid again. The LFTs are very hit and miss.

Ceramide · 25/01/2022 07:39

Maybe her gut bacteria were disturbed by the virus? She could try acidophilus or live yoghurt to replenish the 'good' bacteria.

whatsleep · 25/01/2022 07:46

We have used daily LFT plus had a PCR this week so I’m as sure as I can be that it’s not covid.

Live yoghurts is a good call, will give it a try, thanks 😊

Sorry this is a vague answer, but I heard a mum on the radio last week describing how her son's sense of smell & taste had been greatly affected by COVID and it had lasted weeks. He had stopped eating, lost a lot of weight etc

Maggiesgarden · 25/01/2022 07:58

Could be parosmia. Very common after covid but usually after losing smell and taste. Loads of stuff on covid Facebook pages and forums.

Redeyed · 25/01/2022 08:03

I had covid at the beginning of December and certain things still taste and smell wrong to me. A friend who had covid much earlier is still suffering from this too.

whatsleep · 25/01/2022 08:15

It’s just weird that she had nothing like this at the time. I’ve searched in the internet and found lots of people suffer with this at the time of infection and the weeks following but nothing as odd as the symptom appearing months after. I have a phone consultation with the doctor at yhh he e end of the week so hopefully she can shine some light on it 🤷‍♀️

There are number of people who don't develop this problem until months afterwards, though often they lose their taste at the time. i've seen it mentioned in a few articles. There's one mentioned here www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-59745976

And here

FredBair · 25/01/2022 11:23

Has she had a cold recently?
I ask because I got occasional phantom smoke smells after covid. Then when I had a mild cold they got much worse and lasted for weeks after.

Starbonnet123 · 25/01/2022 13:15

We all had Covid before Christmas and now still have taste and smell issues. Me and my husband can't taste salt very well and I keep getting a burning smell up my nose and our daughter can't abide the smell of coffee, she says it smells like rotten meat .
It is getting better but very slowly.

Bobholll · 25/01/2022 14:01

I lost my smell & taste with covid. It came back about 30% smell & 90% taste within a couple months. I got a stinking cold at Christmas (not covid, I checked several times on PCRs & LFTs) & my smell has been completely knocked again. It’s now minimal and I’m smelling a weird smell constantly. It’s really annoying. I’m 3 weeks post the shitty cold now & it’s no better 😩

Doc thinks I probably had a coronavirus cold (not covid, as in some colds are other types of coronaviruses) & it’s got into my smell cells again 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m now trying a steroid nasal spray & smell training again..

It is what it is, Its not long covid. I’m perfectly fit & healthy. I can live normally. Just unfortunately got an annoying side effect. Hopefully it’ll go back to normal eventually!

victopai · 25/01/2022 16:55

This happened to me about a month or two after covid. I can still smell rotten eggs and taste them. Yuck

ShellieEllie · 25/01/2022 17:01

I'm suffering with parosmia. Mine came on about 10 weeks after testing positive for Covid. At that time I lost my sense of smell and taste for about 6 weeks. I'm finding a Facebook group very supportive but recovery seems to be individual. Some take a few weeks, others still haven't got it back after 2 years. Seems time is the healer.

whatsleep · 25/01/2022 18:19

Thanks for all of your comments, it seems like she is not alone with this weird symptom. Fingers crossed it doesn’t last too long as she’s only able to stomach sweet things at the minute 🙈

@victopai that’s the same time frame we are at! How long did it last for?

MarthaJonesPhone · 25/01/2022 18:43

DS developed Parosmia after catching Covid. Its taken approximately 6 months to (mostly) go.

victopai · 25/01/2022 18:45

Well I had covid in September. (Have it again at the moment!). And it's just easing off now. Some things still do have that smell and taste but not as strong. Good luck and I hope it eases sooner than me

MarthaJonesPhone · 25/01/2022 19:16

I'm trying to remember savoury food that DS was ok with.

Homemade pizza
Minced beef (he wouldn't eat it previously)
Chicken nuggets
Salty tasting food, he now puts salt on his food as it seems to neutralise the horrible smell / taste.

I feel for you, its been pretty traumatic for DS learning which foods he can safely eat.

ArtfulScreamer · 25/01/2022 19:51

I've a few friends suffering the same it's not long covid in terms of the fatigue and reduced lung capacity and other issues some are facing but it is an after effect of covid a bit like the random toe thing that I can't really remember the details of.

loopsngeorge · 25/01/2022 23:10

My son had the same thing - parosmia kicked in about three months after he'd had covid. It's really horrible and it affected his taste and eating. He's not completely back to normal but it has got much better over time. The only medical advice I could find was from a limited study several years ago where they had treated people with saline Solutions several times a day up the nostrils. He tried this and it did help quite a bit.

thelegohooverer · 25/01/2022 23:26

I’ve had this with sinus infections too.

cannaethink · 25/01/2022 23:42

I had covid in March 2020 then parosmia in August 2020. It took about a year to go completely.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/01/2022 09:39

A friend lost her taste and smell with Covid, many weeks later it started to return but everything tasted of smoke.
I think your dd probably had diminished sense of taste but didn’t really notice it and now is experiencing the change in taste (and smell?) that many people experience.
DH had Covid in September and his taste is returning slowly.

whatsleep · 26/01/2022 20:39

She’s managed a dinner covered in gravy today so I think the tip about salty food was a great call thankyou 😁😁. I’ll be asking the GP about saline drops so with a bit of luck things might improve slightly. Thanks again, you have all helped us to find some temporary solutions although the fermented yoghurt (live yoghurt) nearly made her throw up 🙈😂!!!

Ds has parosmia. It started 3months after he got covid... sounds similar except everything smells awful to him. Lots of support groups on Facebook etc
