A little surprised with girl guiding

Dd1 is a rainbow, tested positive for covid a week ago, day 5 and 6 lateral flows negative, no symptoms and back to school, dd2 is. Brownie, remained negative every day. Trip to theatre with the whole local guiding group this weekend, what would have been day 9 for dd1. However neither of them are allowed to go, girl guiding rules state that it is still 10 days of isolation for any body that has covid or has covid within their family. so total disregard for government advice, this has been checked higher up. Now not a huge big deal but they both want to go and I have to say I am slightly surprised, especially as it’s perfectly acceptable for them to go to school, dance class, swimming class etc.

I think the guides have the balance right here.

All these rules aren't defining a solid line between activities that are safe vs those that are dangerous. There are risks, not all of which are known, that get larger or smaller with various criteria but never go away completely. It would be ridiculous to try to eliminate all risk so the rules are set at carefully considered points to bslance the potential harms with the lost opportunities. The balance point is different for attending school or for places of employment because there are serious harms done when these things can't happen. It's quite right that guides have stricter rules because the balance between potential harms is very different

I am a Guide leader and I’ve asked my Guides not to attend a meeting if they have been a very close contact of a positive case, for example in their household. I have acknowledged that this is stricter than government rules but a) my team and I are volunteers and are not prepared to accept the risk; b) we have 11 different schools represented in my group (and among the same schools different school years too) so potential for onward transmission is high; c) much as I think Guides is great it isn’t ‘essential’ and missing the occasional meeting isn’t awful, though it’s a pain for badge activities!

I haven’t yet had a parent disagree and have had a number of positive comments thanking us for all we are doing to keep our girls safe (obviously we have more than that in our risk assessment)

@DaisyDozyDee

I thought the official guidance was that if you tested negative twice, you could leave isolation early but you should wear a mask and avoid vulnerable people and crowded indoor spaces. While their probability of still being infectious is low, the risk associated with a theatre trip with a bunch of children from schools across the area is high and I think the leaders are right to say no.

I think it's understandable to feel disappointed, but at the end of the day it's a non essential extracurricular and it's run by volunteers--I think it has to be the organization's call.

It will be all about insurance and protecting the volunteers. They will have had to do risk assessments I am sure.
My dds are scouts and tbh not aware of isolation rules as haven't had that issue but I would fully support them

Their group , their rules . They are probably concerned about keeping the group actually functioning in the long term through covid. It's hard to run groups if your volunteers are all sick Hmm
