Boris' Partygate

Are MPs and media going too far or was Boris out of order? Was Boris really meaning for people to adhere to the rules fully or just saying it because he was expected to?

OP posts:
Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 11/01/2022 20:32

I think this will be the beginning of the end of his premiership.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 11/01/2022 20:33

For me what makes it worse was that it wasn't just an impromptu gathering that evolved and got a bit out of hand, it was planned with 100 invites sent out. The government clearly were never in fear of this virus yet they continued to instill this into the country.

MaryStuart · 11/01/2022 20:45

Read the ‘share your stories’ thread in this topic. It’s heartbreaking what people went through at the exact same time Boris and his cronies were partying without a care in the world. It’s an absolute disgrace.
So no, no way are the media or MPs going too far. It’s exactly what the lying bastard deserves. Just far too late. And I can only hope there is actually a consequence.

Awakened22 · 11/01/2022 20:51

Yes it was absolutely out of order.

But - who is benefiting from this being leaked? It happened in 2020 so plenty of people knew about this info for a long time…why now? I can’t help but think it’s either trying to distract us from something (Blair being knighted?!) or someone else wants to gain politically from it (Gove?!)….

Nat6999 · 11/01/2022 20:54

Even his own back benchers think he is out of order, Angela Rayner gave the whole party what for today. He hadn't even got the balls to be in Parliament today. I can't wait for PMQ's tomorrow to see everyone give him their honest opinion of him. It is time for him to go, people were unable to be with dying loved ones or even meet more than one other person outdoors & he was having a bring a bottle party, it was taking the piss.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 11/01/2022 20:58

Well yes, anyone who has knowingly sat on this Info until now is just as guilty imo
Elizabeth110100 · 11/01/2022 21:03

Our children weren't even allowed to play in a park, people were alienated and spent months alone, we had to work from home and educate our children all at the same time, people couldn't even say goodbye to loved ones who were dying alone in hospital.....I can't even put into words how angry I am about the parties and whatever the fuck else they want to call them.

I can't believe more people aren't incandescent with rage over this.

I'm not a fan of trial-by-media most of the time but it is certainly warranted right now. In fact, they aren't going far enough. None of us are.

RachC2021 · 11/01/2022 21:20

Agree it’s not just the PM that needs to go, it’s the person who sent the email and everyone the email was sent to as well. So — general election time.

I think the reason for the leaks now is either a) someone with a vendetta against the PM (Cummings?) and/or b) someone wanting to get rid of the PM at a time when it looks like the pandemic is coming to an end so that the new PM isn’t “tainted” with the Covid stuff and needing to call lockdowns.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/01/2022 22:29

Just catching up on the news today, watching various MP’s with their genuinely sad stories of constituents unable to attend funerals or only speaking with elderly relatives through the window etc. The common theme being that it was disgusting for Johnson and co to be holding a party in May 2020 when so many were following the rules.

It struck me that their stories highlighted the sheer inhumanity of the lockdown rules. How did we ever become a country where only seven people could attend the funeral of a beloved family member? The truly disgusting issue here is the rules, not those who broke them.

We need an inquiry into how these rules were set, not into if they were broken.

And the politicians using accusations of rule breaking for party political purposes look pretty disgusting to me also.

@Katie517

As much as Boris is a lying hypocrite be careful what you wish for as a Conservative party with Gove in charge of even worse a labour PM in the shape of Starmer will be much much worse. My thoughts on the whole thing is that they knew full well it wasn’t as much of a scary risk as they had made it out to be by which point the public were almost begging for restrictions and to be told exactly what to do and as well as being angry with Boris I think a lot of people are angry with themselves for following nonsensical rules to the latter! Looking back the hysteria from some people was something else. I will never regret my decision to keep seeing my family and these stories about parties that keep coming out only make me more confident that I made the right decision.
Agree with parts of this. The public are angry with themselves for being so utterly duped. I'm so glad in hindsight I knew all this rule following and begging for restrictions was madness.

And obviously they are furious with Boris Johnson and his hideous government. There's a lot of anger now with "authority".

Iwantthesummersun · 11/01/2022 22:32

Jeeso I wish I knew it was okay for key workers to have a party. I’ve not been allowed to have lunch with my key worker colleagues with more than 7 of us in a room for almost 2 years now. We should just BYOB and it’ll be fine.

HesterShaw1 · 11/01/2022 22:32

And @AlecTrevelyan006 I agree with you too. The issue is those vile fucking "rules" and those who administered them

ZippyZap · 11/01/2022 22:50

It won't go far enough imo, how dare he enjoy life in his garden AND invite up to 100 other people for drinks while park benches were taped off and we could only meet 1 friend outside. Let alone all the closed school and juggling work with that. I can't actually put into words how mad I am about that, I want to see that man truly suffer if I'm honest. I want him to end up being blacklisted by everyone he knows (but that won't happen as they are all corrupt) and end up broke with no future income (again, even if he resigns, he will still make money!)

Motorina · 11/01/2022 22:57
@RoseRedRoseBlue Michael Fabricunt was having a try out of the key worker angle earlier. Funnily enough, I don't remember it being OK for hospital staff having a piss up after work in the car park at the time...
Bunch of nurses at one of the hospitals in my region were disciplined for eating lunch together in a bit of open space outside the hospital.

Um...it was in legislation and you could get a hefty fine if caught.

He cannot argue that people took the "rules" too much to heart. There was actual law. Some students were fined huge amounts for parties.

Triing · 11/01/2022 23:01

Obviously Johnson has no respect for the country and should go. But, the English electorate voted him in. Gave him an 80 seat majority. If they hadn't done that, many people would be alive today that aren't, the country would be less of a laughing stock& it may be still in the EU. I also think there is something a bit up with the whole "parties (social not political) = evil, in the red corner, NHS (uncriticisable deity) =good, in the blue corner business.

EmmaH2022 · 11/01/2022 23:11

Agree I don't want Johnson to be replaced by someone even more authoritarian

There will never be an acceptable explanation for what we have been through but other countries have much worse and that's ongoing. Gove or Starmer would probably want to do that kind of thing.

EmmaH2022 · 11/01/2022 23:11

*been put through, that should say

KaptainKaveman · 11/01/2022 23:19

Johnson is a despicable self serving liar. He has weakened Britain. We are a laughing stock. We have no standing in the international community.

Vote with your feet ffs.

bellamountain · 11/01/2022 23:25

We all feel mugged off let's be honest. How do those fuckers feel that snitched on their neighbours? Or the people tutting at my kids in the park play area.

I'm not angry with the government. This whole pandemic has been media and hysteria driven. If I recall the public and the press were the ones calling for lockdown.

tldr · 11/01/2022 23:30

Children hadn’t been allowed to play with other children for two months by this point.

Despicable.

EmmaH2022 · 11/01/2022 23:32

The sad thing is, AFAICS, the people who snitched on neighbours and called for lockdowns and for little children to wear masks...they still feel like that. I've lost friends over that attitude. You know the sort who think magic fairies make their takeaway food delivery or whatever arty thing they ordered on Amazon...no sense at all that people worked hard to keep the country going.

I wish they felt they had been misled but they don't seem to. Or maybe it will take more time for "government felt safe to have parties" to sink in.

Sheabutterisdelish · 11/01/2022 23:32

Of course they was out of order! I wonder just how many real key workers ie NHS and care staff at that time could have mentally benefitted from some relaxing downtime together after another horrendous day at work? I bet all of them could, but instead of having a "bring a bottle party" they went home knackered, stripping at the door and avoiding as many people as possible as to not pass anything on they could have potentially picked up at work and got ready for another horrendous day tomorrow. I dont know how anyone could see this as reasonable! Kids playgrounds were cordoned off at this time so they couldn't interact, something that's vital to development especially In young ones and some dickhead is trying to placate this situation by saying outdoor transmission was minimal..... nahh fuck off mate

This .... totally agree

EmmaH2022 · 11/01/2022 23:33

PS all our play park area was taped off along with benches. Not much for kids to play, then I heard toddlers should be wearing masks. Outdoors. Argh.

Flaxmeadow · 11/01/2022 23:40

It isn't that the the rules were wrong, its that in this May 2020 email episode, he so obviously broke them and should now resign. The garden photo wasn't that bad, it made sense to work outdoors but this email event is much worse than that and its so flippant. Then his reaction in the interview when he appears to smirk.

What does anyone think will happen tomorrow at PMQs?
