Anyone else managed to avoid covid in the household?

Dh tested positive last Wednesday (was trying to prove his snotty nose was just the cold and it wasn't!). His symptoms remained as snotty nose, scratchy throat and mild headache that he didn't need painkillers for.

As we're in Scotland the whole household had to isolate together for 10 days. I didn't isolate from him as we still shared the bed and I sat in the living room with him (figured I may as well get it while it's the milder omicron variant plus we don't have a spare room I could sleep in). The 2 teenage kids avoided him by mostly staying in different rooms and eating at the table while we ate in the living room.

None of the rest of us have tested positive. We all went for PCRs and only dh was positive. I have done regular LFTs and they have all been negative, including today. Ds and dd also had no symptoms/tested negative.

How have we managed to avoid it? Dh uses a CPAP; has he been breathing his germs into that at night rather than in my direction? It's a mystery!

Yes, none of us caught it from DS12 when he had it in October.
He stayed mostly in his room, but shared bathroom and I was in and out of his room looking after him, sometimes but not always with a mask on. Once he started feeling better (around day 6) he spent more time with us. I guess this was pre-Omicron though. Me and DP were double vaccinated at the time, DS and his little sister unvaccinated. We all did PCRs as close contacts around day 2 or 3 and regular LFTs after that.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 07/01/2022 10:35

We have all tested positive at different times. I have it again now and so far everyone else is fine. I'm on day 5

UnalliterativeGeorge · 07/01/2022 10:38

I've avoided it twice so far. DH had it April 2020, DS had it September 2021 so far DD and I have never had it, as far as we know anyway!

pintsizeprincess · 07/01/2022 10:43

Yes I tested positive 10 days ago and my DH and neither of my dds have caught it from me. They are 9 and 6 and I haven't been isolating from them. We only started testing regularly before christmas as mil is ill with cancer and we wanted to make sure it was safe to visit her. So I suppose it's possible they have had it previously without symptoms .

Oneearringlost · 07/01/2022 10:45

None of us have had it yet.
There is some evidence that a type of immunity can exist among some people. Not sure of the science.
We have had multiple routes of COVID into the family so we're a bit confused. Just luck, just a matter of time? Maybe...
DH is respiratory consultant working working directly on the COVID wards.
DD 2 back from uni
DS1 back from working in Germany
DD 2 teacher, sec school
An unexpected guest for Christmas for 6 days, all of whose family had COVID symptoms and were awaiting PCR results, ( all subsequently positive).
I am pretty phlegmatic that well get it though.
Each day without succumbing must be a bonus. Hope you continue to stay well

Baxdream · 07/01/2022 10:56

No we all got it over a couple of weeks!

dementedpixie · 07/01/2022 11:03

My sister and her kids all got it one after the other which is what I expected to happen here. I was hoping to get it over and done with before ds went back to school (goes back on monday) but it didn't happen

FIL had it, CEV unboostered MIL didn't.
Dad had it, mum didn't.
Friend got it her DH and her friend who was staying with them didn't.
Another friend's DS got it, her, her DH and other 2 DC didn't.
Another friend had it, her DH and DC didn't.

TallulahTumeric · 07/01/2022 13:00

So far DS aged 6 has it with no symptoms. Only tested him as we'd had close contact over Xmas.
Ds(8), DH and I are still negative six days in. Could still get us but I'm baffled we are still negative.

astoundedgoat · 07/01/2022 13:05

I have it at the moment. My DH teaches teens who spent all autumn coughing and sneezing at him and didn't catch it so he thinks he's superman and has immunity from constant low level exposure - it remains to be seen if he will avoid catching it from me this time around and prove his theory!

We all had it at the start of the summer.

Exhausteddog · 07/01/2022 13:05

DS(12) had it with minimal symptoms in November. He didn't isolate, and ate meals with us, used the same bathroom etc. We didnt hug or sit close up on the sofa but those were literally the only concessions we made. No one else got it.

The other 3 of us tested positive at New Year (all on the same day after doing lfts every day following a close contact - DS had also been in the house with the close contact) We all had various cold symptoms but have taken the same (very minor) precautions of not hugging or kissing DS, or sitting closely. So far he has remained negative.

Trinacham · 07/01/2022 13:23

Yep, in all 3 households in my family nobody else in the household has caught it! Seems more common than those that do. My husband didn't catch it from me despite us not being careful, my sister never gave it to her husband or kids, my nephew never passed it on and my niece never passed it on (different households and all different times)

AllisoninWunderland · 07/01/2022 13:58

I had it last month but none of the rest of my family caught it. Didn’t isolate from each other either as I was testing negative until day 4!

CosmoMint · 07/01/2022 14:27

Me! My DH tested positive on Xmas eve. He had symptoms two days before he tested, so potentially 4 days infectious around us, sharing food etc before he got the positive. After testing positive the only difference was he used a mask all day everyday and tried to keep a distance which is hard to do in a small house. But apart from that we carried on as normal, shared same bed, same bathroom, he even cooked some meals. We didn’t isolate him in one room as would have been hard for the kids not seeing him over Xmas. As all of us were not going school/working over this period, we were together 24 hours a day as we barely left the house. He still had positive LFT on day 10 so we isolated the full 10 days. The rest of us didn’t catch it. I have no idea why. I was due for booster so can’t be down to booster protection, and kids unvaccinated. Was it luck? Antibodies from previous unknown infection? Would love to know why. I can’t find anything online about why this happens in households, would love to see some research into this.

TooWicked · 07/01/2022 14:31

DH didn’t catch it from me. We continued to sleep in the same bed, the family all ate together, I didn’t isolate within the house at all. I had a couple of days early on (think it was day 3/4) of feeling loads better and we even had sex and he still didn’t get it. Grin

And I had to isolate the full 10 days as I was still testing positive day 8/9/10.

dementedpixie · 07/01/2022 14:33

I wonder what the household transmission rate is. Sounds like a lot of people are avoiding getting infected despite close family contact

My DS (10) brought it home from school last year. I had him in bed with me (I was unvaxxed at that time) for a couple of nights (he wasn't that bad luckily, just high temp and sore throat) and didn't get it when I was certain I would (I did 2 PCRs and daily LFTs).
He did pass it on to my mum (before he tested positive) though and she ended up in hospital for two weeks and she passed it on to my dad who was really ill but at home with it.
I paid to have an antibody test as I couldn't believe I didn't get it, I felt guilty I guess, but it came back negative for antibodies so I haven't had it before and not known about it (plus I test regularly so would've been picked up).

greenweepingwillow · 07/01/2022 16:12

it seems very unpredictable tbh.
Christmas 2020 dd (then 14) had covid. We didnt isoalte her at all, and we were all together a lot. No one else in the household of 8 people caught it.
July 2020 dd (same one!) got it again. DD(16) who shares a room with her also caught it this time, no one else out of 6 people in the household caught it.
20th dec 21 ds (13) tested positive. I tested positive on lft on 24th. Didnt isolate, continued to share a ned with dh.
we completed our 10 days, and no one else had tested positve (again out of 8 people in the household) BUT then on day 11 dh tested positive....very odd! Although other 5 poeple all asymptomatic and negative.

GypsyWanderer · 07/01/2022 17:21

We’re a family of 6 and it’s been in the house twice. Both times me and DH have avoided catching it.

GypsyWanderer · 07/01/2022 17:21

I should add we never isolated anyone within the household either.

bedtimestories · 07/01/2022 17:27

Yes, twice!

Tulipomania · 07/01/2022 17:30

OP, have you all had your boosters?

Maybe they actually worked!

Frazzled2207 · 07/01/2022 17:33

ds caught it as did dh a few days later
Myself and other ds did not despite ZERO distancing.

Porcupineintherough · 07/01/2022 17:34

Wuhan strain - I got it and passed it on to dh and ds1.

Alpha - ds1 got it and passed it on to me.

Omicron ds2 had it and passed it to none of us, despite producing the most positive lfts I've ever seen. Meanwhile his best friend passed it on to his whole family.

No idea how this thing works Confused

Bluebluemoon · 07/01/2022 17:34

Yes, dd tested positive twice last year and ds had it recently - 6 of us in the household and no one else caught it. Or if we did we had no symptoms.

We didn't isolate or be particularly careful either.
