shouting at 10 year old about a mask

Out in a town where mask wearing is obligatory but a lot of people are not wearing masks. I am wearing a mask and my 8 and 10 year old are too. 10 year old walks to a shop window to have a look at some model airplanes. He has pulled down mask as he is about to eat something (permitted by rules). Man behind him says something rude about him to another person, so that dc could overhear, about dc not wearing a mask. Man had a 2 year old on his shoulders and his wife was carrying a baby. Dc told me this later, he said he froze in panic and called me over instead of putting on his mask. I walked over and and as i do the man shouts loudly and passively aggressively "masks are needed ALL over [town]" in a "this child is totally stupid obviously". Dc was really upset. I said the man should have just reminded him to pull up his mask. As we stood about 5 other families went by with children of a similar age without masks. Had that man just gone round shouting at everyone all afternoon I wonder? Why not just say "you need to pull up your mask" in a normal tone of voice?

I didn't register what the man had said at first, as I thought dc was just calling me over to admire a plane, and by the time I had realised and turned around to look at him, he had disappeared into the crowd. Obviously not so willing to be rude to a grown adult as he had been to a child.

Small thing I know. Just fed up of rude people. Maybe I am being oversensitive.

Someone did this with DD11 as she was walking out of a shop while we stayed with her grandparents. I was already outside and as she came through the doors she'd pulled her mask off. Bloke walking in clearly hasn't noticed she'd just taken it off and started telling her how stupid and selfish and irresponsible she is. DD froze on the spot. She's very conscientious about mask wearing and was visibly upset, meanwhile I'm striding over to this bloke asking what he thinks he's doing speaking to my child like that. He looks at me (without a mask because this is outside the shop) and says 'no wonder she has no sense with a parent who can't even set a good example'. I'm afraid I said some very unladylike things to him.

In what world is it appropriate for a grown adult stranger to speak to a child in this manner? In a world gone fucking mad that's what.

Where are you? In Scotland for example the child should wear a mask, in England they are exempt.
Under 12s in Scotland no longer need to wear masks.

Bet the pandemic has been an absolute gift to someone like him. Now he feels fully justified in throwing his weight around.
There's a lot of it about unfortunately.

The only further thought I’d be giving this is what an utter bellend the guy was. Imagine having to bully a child in public to feel better about himself. What a prick.

It's not obligatory outdoors anywhere in Scotland

Clearly not the UK.

The man is either not very nice or not very well. Best to ignore and forget.

That’s bad OP. I’m sorry your son had to experience that.

Honestly, people have gone mad. I was pushed to the ground in a supermarket by a woman shoving her trolley into me & yelling at me for getting too close (clearly I wasn’t that close given there was a trolley length apart 🙄). I was so shocked. I’m not a confrontational person at all so I got up quietly & went to carry on. But another shopper yelled at her and she just yelled back ‘does she want to put me in hospital for Christmas’ ..

This was in Asda on 23rd December. You couldn’t move for people. If you are that scared of covid, don’t bloody go to the shops at that time!

Thank you so much everyone, these stories cheered me up! We are lucky I think that we don't come across random hotheads much where we live. We have also been pretty conscientious about masks and rules etc right from the start!

Thanks again for the lovely replies.

Yes, some people have gone bonkers, haven’t they? Earlier today on a train a woman squirted disinfectant spray at my son because he sneezed (into his elbow as he’s been taught). He was only sneezing because he was allergic to the woman’s dog!

I completely agree. Some people have been waiting all their lives for this. Frustrated people who weren't monitors at school or watched too much Dad's Army!
