I'm hungry, but what the hell do you eat when everything tastes of absolutely nothing? What did you eat when you had this?

Cold onion bhajis. For the texture and mild spice. I didn’t eat onions before covid but now I’m a big fan. A covid bonus Grin

Oh it's rubbish isn't it I really feel
your pain 😞

Normally we have something yummy like a steak or really nice take away on New Year's Eve

I've had some french stick and that's it and couldn't really taste that 😞 hope it comes back soon - it's miserable

Greydogs123 · 31/12/2021 22:30

For me it became about “mouth feel”, so pizza was rubbish because it just felt like cardboard. Salad was quite nice (normally eat it because it’s healthy) because of the crunch, curry was nice because I could feel the heat and it was almost like a taste.

Lemons1571 · 31/12/2021 22:36

Ready salted crisps. Cuppa Soup. Custard or bread sauce / stuffing was ok.

Definitely not coffee (metallic muddy hot water), mince pie (shortcrust pastry is like dust), or red onion (like chewing metal).

I had it beginning of November. Still can't taste until goes to back of throat. So good news I didn't eat and lost 2 stone. Bad news I was healthy weight before so now underweight. But I loved texture so crisps toast etc. Now can taste spicy chilled back of throat and also anything umani? Don't know how to spell it. Buy totally into supercoods (still feel rubbish) and I hated sweet potato or butternut squash so that with seeds galore for te ture. Finally starting to eat properly and healthy for nutrients

@BernardsBum

Second vote for salt & vinegar crisps. Also Chinese food - I could pick up umami even if I couldn't smell anything
Mmmm umami ...that sounds hopeful!
UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2021 22:44

The only thing I have got the feeling I could smell slightly (couldn't taste) was some mango. I will try some more fruit tomorrow. I had a slice of pizza today. The warm sensation was nice for a bit and that was it. I definitely couldn't eat anything dry like toast. I might try some Chinese soups.

dottyaboutstripes · 31/12/2021 22:47

I ate toast and boiled eggs when I could be bothered

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 31/12/2021 22:51

Texture was off for me, too, chewing chips was like chewing sawdust. Horrible sensation.

UndertheCedartree · 31/12/2021 22:57

@LostForWords2021 - I've not cooked atall since Christmas Eve - still not well enough. The DC started feeling a bit better yesterday so they made themselves dinner last night and then we got takeaway tonight.

Wallabyone · 31/12/2021 22:58

I ate the spiciest crisps I could find. I could really only detect salt and spice - sad times.

Lindy2 · 31/12/2021 23:02

You need to go for texture or temperature because you should still sense those. If you've got any taste sensation like spicy, sweet, salty then obviously go for those type of foods.

Baked beans have an interesting texture.
Ice cream is smooth and cold.
Celery and carrots for a crunch or bread sticks.

DH's first return to being able to taste was the mustard in a ham sandwich - I had put rather a lot of it on to see if it could get a reaction. Grin

I hope you recover soon.

It's shit isn't it?? I did eat a bit too much crap yesterday because I wanted to try and see if I could taste things, but I can't so i think I'll just stick to eating only when im really hungry and using it to address my over eating tendencies. I definitely have issues around food, it's embarrassing to even say this but the panic I felt when I realised I couldn't taste my favourite go to comfort foods was intense.

So I've been looking at grounding techniques for when I feel like I would have comfort eaten in the past and that seems to be helping. I can't do exercise because I feel too unwell and im still stuck in the house but I can go for a shower or redirect my thoughts.

Textures are okay though :)

I lost a stone when I had covid, the loss of taste and smell and the iffy texture put me off food pretty much entirely. Luckily I had some frozen stuff in for DC and they continued to eat ok (we all had covid but it didn't affect their taste or smell - or appetite!!)

JennyForeigner · 01/01/2022 10:37

Fried halloumi

Frazzledbutcalm · 01/01/2022 10:44

Teen ds lost his taste and smell due to Covid 4+ months ago - still not back at all Sad …. I’ve heard it can take up to a year - how have others found it?

As for eating, he eats everything he used to, but then I cook for him so that makes a difference I guess.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 01/01/2022 10:56

@Frazzledbutcalm your poor DS! Mine was gone for about 2 weeks (during which I could be found fervently sniffing hand soaps, disinfectant, strong spices in the hopes that I'd get something!!) and eventually I got a whiff of washing up liquid and after that my smell came back quite quickly, taste took a few more days. So maybe 17 days all told before it was all back to normal.

Vthirtyone · 01/01/2022 11:03

My nicest thing has been sandwiches with butter, sliced tomato and crisps in - it has a nice mix of textures! Might add some aubergine pickle to it today for the spiciness

13luckyblackcats · 01/01/2022 11:09

Thin, spicy soup. Something like a tin of butter beans blended with instant stock, passata and lots of chilli. And some oil to get calories in. Drank it out of a mug. I really struggle to eat when ill normally, but Covid was even worse, so this helped.

ponkydonkey · 01/01/2022 11:19

Frazzles we're my go to
Or a mix of cheddars and pickled onion monster munch
Then moved onto ham
Spicy noodles were great too

Kwackerly · 01/01/2022 11:36

Fruit was nice. Lots of fruit and marmite on toast, o could nearly taste that. Like those ghosts in Harry potter at the deathday party... Sadly trying to taste things Sad

Frazzledbutcalm · 01/01/2022 11:51

kurt … so far there’s literally no signs of smell or taste coming back at all! He’s got nothing! Sad

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 01/01/2022 12:30

Frazzle that's awful, I'm so sorry! It's good that it hasn't affected his appetite but still!!

Frazzledbutcalm · 01/01/2022 14:59

He has a very healthy teen appetite 😆😆 and luckily, a similar metabolism to go with it 😉

He’s really fed up with not being able to taste 🙁
