Any under 5s caught covid and had it mild? (Omricon)

So worried about my prem baby who is 1.5 years old now. She doesn’t have any underlying health issues that we know of, but this was a worrying read for me:

news.sky.com/story/covid-more-than-500-children-admitted-to-hospital-with-coronavirus-in-england-in-week-to-boxing-day-12505306

Any positive experiences to help calm the nerves. Anxiety is so high i am considering keeping her older brothers out of school for a few weeks extra until more is known on how omricon is affecting children.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they were all hospitalised BECAUSE of Covid, it just means they tested positive whilst they were there (or just before). So a kid could have broken their leg, gone in and done a test at the hospital and was positive.
My 22 month old was kept in hospital a fever weeks back for a non-Covid horrible virus. He’s got Covid now and so far it’s much less severe (similar ie temp and snottiness but he’s nowhere near as poorly).
Try not to worry - I still don’t think Covid is any more serious for the little ones than the other bugs which are also going around at the moment.

shouldistop · 28/12/2021 22:10

I'm friends with a paediatrics nurse. She said all admissions are swabbed for Covid. They could be in with a broken leg.
She told me she has yet to come across a child seriously ill with Covid although she realises there have been a small number.

Katie517 · 28/12/2021 22:13

They swab all children who are admitted for covid, it doesn’t mean they are in hospital with Covid. I am yet to hear of any young child who has had anything more than a sniffle.

shouldistop · 28/12/2021 22:14

To answer your question specifically "any under 5s caught Covid and had it mild?". The vast, vast majority. Most probably don't have symptoms at all.

Bobholll · 28/12/2021 22:15

I know loads (presumably omicron, they are all in London). They all had mild symptoms ranging from non to a couple with fevers & vomiting.. covid IS mild in 99.9% of kids. Please don’t let your anxiety interfere with your kids education. It’d be very unfair to keep them off school.

Remember, these stats do not say how many are being admitted for something else who happen to have covid.. cases are so high in some areas that it’ll be more likely kids tests positive than not on admission for a range of other illnesses. Also doesn’t say if they were admitted because of covid, how long they were in or why. Young children will be admitted for monitoring in many cases. My DD was in hospital with dehydration over summer after a stomach bug. It was for less than 24 hours, she just needed some fluids!

Get help for the anxiety, it’s not nice for you or your kids!

Going against the grain here. But trust your instinct... if you arent happy to send children back in january then dont.

DD had COVID back in Jan (so not omicron!) and she had no symptoms. She only got tested as I had COVID (many symptoms!) so we tested the rest of the family. She was 13 months at the time.
She has had many many fevers since then, Covid didn't even register. I understand the worry though, as I was so worried about her while also feeling so rubbish myself. She was more bothered about being under house arrest in winter with nothing to entertain her expect poor DH who tested negative and had to pull her up and down the hallways all day in a washing basket while also looking after me 😊. The house was quite a mess when I finally felt well enough to get out of bed five days later (but we all survived).

beammeupsc0tty · 28/12/2021 22:45

My 2 year old turned positive on Dec 24th. We did a lateral flow first because he has a fever overnight, yes he had an ongoing cold but the last year he's had neverending colds and this is the first time he's ever went positive on a lft. Confirmed positive but PCR the same day. My child has underlying kidney condition and I can tell you thankfully that he's had worst colds than this. I don't know if it was Omicron because we weren't informed but we live in Surrey where it's meant to have high prevalence.

NauseousNancy · 28/12/2021 22:49

My 4 year old had covid, before omicron though, presume delta.

Zero symptoms, only know as she had a test as her sister was a contact and tested positive (also zero symptoms). And this is from a child who has been hospitalised more than once with chest infections. She has been much, much sicker with a viral infection.

TyotyaKlava · 28/12/2021 22:58

My dd (4) had it a few weeks ago, actually she brought it home from nursery. I only tested her because they had a case at nursery and her lft then pcr came back positive. She didn’t have a single symptom, I just remember her blowing her nose once (!). She was as lively as ever maybe it even made her more hyper 😂
My other dd (7) didn’t have any symptoms either, she said she had a headache a few times one day but other than that nothing.
Me and my husband had very mild cold symptoms, fatigue blocked nose and headache. We were not told it was omicron though, my dd got it a couple of weeks ago, it was not prevalent in our area then but still could be. I am hoping it is as if it was delta we could catch it again and I don’t fancy another 10 day isolation!

BigGreen · 28/12/2021 23:23

DS7 is completely asymptomatic, DS3 won't let us near him with a test swab, so if he's got it he's totally asymptomatic too (we are all isolating regardless).

dooooooo1234 · 28/12/2021 23:34

My three year old has it at the moment. She was achey and more lethargic for a few days and has had less appetite. She's on day 9 now and seems to be over it completely.

CallMeNutribullet · 28/12/2021 23:49

18 month old neice had it recently and it was like a very mild cold for a couple of days, unlike my 36 year old brother who was bedridden for a week

Bananarice · 29/12/2021 00:21

My 19month old son, along with the rest of the family tested positive 11 days ago. He has appeared to handle it really well. I only tested him because me, ds1 and dh had a positive lft.

Bananarice · 29/12/2021 00:26

Ds3 was born slightly early at 35weeks and needed some oxygen on his first day at nicu.

princesspeppax · 29/12/2021 09:31

My 7 month old, 4 year old and 5 year old all had covid and were absolutely fine apart from very mild cold symptoms for a few days x

2boysand1princess · 29/12/2021 11:47

Thank you so much ladies for sharing your experiences. Feel a bit more confident now. I don’t usually panic this quickly, but that link and then another thread on the covid board, about children and covid in the USA really made me worry. Keep thinking is there something they aren’t telling us yet. However, hearing first hand experiences from you, makes you realise the most likely outcome for our kids.

My 4 year old recently had covid. She was a tiny bit sick in the night, had a mild fever for less than 24 hours and went to bed early and with no fuss (for once!) Then she was back to normal the next day.

Londonwriter · 29/12/2021 13:23

Two kids here in the house with my COVID-19 +ve DH.

Older boy (just turned five) is running around like nothing is amiss, but had a mildly runny nose for a few days.

My 22 month old is grouchy and snotty with a reduced appetite. He’s enjoying the opportunity to watch Fireman Sam on iPad.

Createdjustforthis · 29/12/2021 13:24

My 4 year old had it before Christmas. She had half an evening of a high temperature and was otherwise absolutely fine.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 29/12/2021 13:25

I’m assuming my son had omicron as were in London. Overall I’d say it was mild as his symptoms only lasted one day. He was rather unwell with a high temperature and felt miserable but he woke up the next morning full of energy and back to normal.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 29/12/2021 13:27

I should also add that my 3 year old didn’t catch it despite them being in the same room together, blowing raspberries in each other’s faces, sharing each other’s water bottles 🙈 so it’s not a given she will catch it even if one of your sons brings it home.

VAM24 · 29/12/2021 13:33

10 month old with suspected covid (waiting on pcr but me and her dad positive along with everyone we saw at christmas!) likely omicron as just outside London
She had 1 night that was quite tough she was so congested she couldn't breathe well, so I took her into hospital who checked her over but she's totally fine and back home. The doctor said he is yet to see any kids without serious underlying conditions have a really bad time with covid so fingers crossed they'll be ok if they catch it.
Following day she has a cough and is a bit tired but mostly back to normal!

TheVolturi · 29/12/2021 13:35

Dd had it two months ago, she's 4. Was like a cold for her. And she'd been in the house with 4 others with covid so I'm assuming she got a high viral load as well.
