Feeling really uneasy on DS 12 returning to school , Just feel this omicron is going to rip through and although I’m told it’s mild 2 people currently with covid are vomiting, stomach pain and feeling dreadful , barely moving out of bed. I’m thinking it’s probably omicron they’ve got .
I feel with out the vaccine I’m sending him in with no protection. Not feeling 100% on the jab but don’t want the risk of long covid and he really seems to suffer quite badly with illness . He had it in October was quite poorly with it , can’t get jab till end of jan . Was poorly 2 weeks ago with headache and temp for four days then cough lft negative . Just don’t want another 8/10 days of omicron . It’s being described as highly contagious so very likely to be in school again in jan .

Are parents going to lft kids twice a week (if test-kit available as I can’t get hold of any at moment) ? Not heard about masks yet , but they were only needed in corridors not in class .

Was hoping if you had delta maybe that would protect you for a bit, if he had antibodies but I’ve read delta gives you no protection from omicron.

Really don’t want schools shut again and so vital for his mental health to be with his peers as well as education.

@CallmeHendricks

"Mine will be going in."

No, they won't. Not if there is not enough staff to open safely.

Yep. And the thing with this is, that there is a big chunk of staffing level where it's not bad enough to close, but it's still REALLY BAD for the staff who have made it in. Let alone the experience the kids are having.

I'm not even considering quality learning in this, just being safe.

blameitonthecaffeine · 29/12/2021 18:47

How can you be forbidden from wear8ng one?! You or the children? They're recommended in indoor settings. We are told we are not required to wear one but if anyone, adult or child, wanted to, that would of course be fine. Can't understand how any other response can be justified. We have a handful of children that wear one. No adults do but I'm 99.9% sure they could. We have to in communal areas so we all have them on us.

Sherrytriflestrull · 29/12/2021 18:48

No dinner staff, no support staff, no cleaners, children at home needing remote learning. The thought makes me want to cry. Honestly, the autumn term was shit. This will be worse.

canary1 · 29/12/2021 18:49

Surely it will be just like the rest society, it will be mayhem and closures throughout our society but people and their workplaces then will get back on track.

I have to say this getting a bit irritating now. The thread was aimed at parents asking their feelings on sending DC back to school. It is OBVIOUS that if a school is shut, we can not send our DC in. Why do school staff keep feeling the need to tell us this? We are not stupid Confused We know we cannot send our DC somewhere that is shut.

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2021 18:53

In terms of the question from op I’m fine about sending dc in

blameitonthecaffeine · 29/12/2021 18:54

Fair enough PrivateHall . I'd forgotten what the OP was about.

I am required to wear one in the corridors (I am really grateful to our local Public health, who mandated that one).

I am absolutely not allowed to wear one in the classroom. Very strict instruction from the Head, carefully policed, significant disciplinary threats for going against 'school policy'.

Information sent out to parents and pupils is that pupils 'should not' wear masks in school.

Head's approach to Covid is ... interesting.

canary1 · 29/12/2021 18:56

I agree PrivateHall, we don’t need to be told when the staff are actually off sick that we can’t send our kids in!
We would assume based on the information available that the class would more than likely be back up and running a week later.
Same as you might phone your GP or dentist or ambulance whatever to find no service there in the coming weeks due to illness/ isolation rules - but they will resume shortly after!

CallmeHendricks · 29/12/2021 18:56

Well, sorry to break it to you, @PrivateHall, but it seems that you're mistaken, as there ARE people who are saying their children will be attending. On this thread and many others.

Surely feelings about sending children back are based on the reality of what's happening in schools in terms of staffing?

They are saying they intend to send their DC in - not that they will leave them in a playground of a closed school Confused

Do you really believe that is what they mean....?

qwertypoiuy · 29/12/2021 18:59

@cantkeepawayforever I work in one. I am forbidden to wear a mask in the classroom, and the children are not allowed to either.

what is the argument to forbid it for anyone? specially children that surely are not talking all the time?

masks do help to stop the spread in an airbone transmission virus like covid:

That is absolutely shocking! Sounds like they think their authority is higher than the government's!

mumsneedwine · 29/12/2021 19:00

No school staff are also parents 🥴. Weirdly we can worry as staff and parents.
It's going to be a mess. Schools might be open but I doubt a full education will be going on. Sadly this was preventable - again.
Ventilation and masks. But once again schools will have neither. Unless I smash a window. It might yet happen.
Parents, if you want an education for your kids then lobby your MP to put some measures into schools. Anything will help - so far we've had nothing.

I'll be making mine climb through the broken fence over the fence. They can lock the gates but mine will still be there. Wink

(I back onto the school)

Garysmum · 29/12/2021 19:01

from a safety perspective, I don't think schools should reopen other than for keyworker children. GCSEs and A Levels should be cancelled again.

CallmeHendricks · 29/12/2021 19:02

And SATs.

No thanks

Keep your dc at home if you have any though

blameitonthecaffeine · 29/12/2021 19:06

Garysmum - define keyworker though? Without furlough, everyone's job is essential.

canary1 · 29/12/2021 19:07

Garysmum

I feel sorry for Gary!
Of course yes, schools should be shut forever and everyone should hide away

What an idiotic thing to say. It is not safe to close schools as a blanket measure. So ‘ from a safety perspective’ as you say, it would actually be a terrible thing to do.

Poor Gary!

LethargicActress · 29/12/2021 19:08

When schools have to cope with large numbers of staff sickness, they will cope. Or they will close for a short period of time. It will be a disrupted term with staff and student absences all over the place, but we’ll cope, just like we did with all the same disruptions last term.

PrivateHall · 29/12/2021 19:10

@Garysmum

from a safety perspective, I don't think schools should reopen other than for keyworker children. GCSEs and A Levels should be cancelled again.
But the last time they did that, pretty much all the DC were there anyway! Plus, if school staff here are claiming most staff will be off sick, how can schools cater for both keyworkers on site and the few who stay at home and require remote learning? It seems that schools will need to carry on as usual with sporadic closures of classes as needed due to staffing - there doesn't seem to be any other solution unfortunately as staff are clear that they cannot cater for both keyworker dc and remote learners, which is totally understandable. I kept all my DC off school recently when someone in our household had covid, and they were understandably unable to provide any school work remotely, which is partly why I intend to keep my DC in school going forward if it is open.
neveradullmoment99 · 29/12/2021 19:13

Well the way I see it is, they give money to this and that but absolutely NO investment in schools and making them safer. I go to my dentist and they operate a type of hepa filter. Why the hell can't we have one in each class?
I want to be in school. I want my dc to be in school. I want them to be safe, I want to be safe.
