Where do you think you caught it?

Over the last week I’ve heard of so many people getting Covid. Obviously over the last 2 years there have been huge numbers.

We don’t think we’ve had it in this house. I WFH full-time, 2 teenage children school/college, 1 with a part time job, husband works full time for the police. We do adhere to masks etc, but also eat out regularly, supermarkets etc. We don’t meet up with friends much and our families are overseas/100s and 100s of miles away.

Is it just luck or are we doing something different (I’m thinking the socialising)? If you’ve had it/have it right now, how do you think you picked it up?

DS caught it from school, DH caught it from him. Other DCs didn’t catch it despite sitting in the car right next to him for 4 hours. I didn’t catch it either (then) despite sleeping in his bedroom with him for 2 nights when he was really ill with it.

I don’t know how I caught it but assume it was through work. I work with children and their families and have been in their homes frequently throughout the pandemic often without PPE (often impossible to have a conversation with young children with a mask on). I caught it 4 weeks after having booster, symptoms were relatively mild considering.

FruitToast · 27/12/2021 20:10

From DD(6) who caught it from a class mate at school.

OpalOwl · 27/12/2021 20:11

From work in a nursery.

Bananarice · 27/12/2021 20:13

That was in regards to this infection.

Back in January 2021, we had covid. It was easier to guess who the culprit was. Dh was the only person who left the house for work and click and collect shopping.

BeLessMe · 27/12/2021 20:14

@KurtWildesChristmasNamechange

From a HCP at the GP surgery
Interesting. Did T&T contact you and say you were a contact of a positive case that worked there? We’re they in full PPE?

I’ve been wondering how it works HCP/patient wise with the confidentiality issues.

rhowton · 27/12/2021 20:15

In London, but where in London, I'm not 100%.

Dontletthemuggglesgetyoudown · 27/12/2021 20:23

Husband caught it from a client who only told him after the court case they were positive because they didn't want to lose their house. He gave it to me.

YouDoIDo · 27/12/2021 20:24

I caught it from my husband. He caught it in London watching the World Cup 🙄

CouldThisReallyBe · 27/12/2021 20:25

I definitely got it on the tube - early November - when mask wearing was waning (before Omicron mask reintroduction). The tube was packed and I was in the minority wearing a mask.

JealousOfDDsOodie · 27/12/2021 20:29

Pretty sure it was Winter Wonderland in London. I regret going - came away and was convinced we'd catch it from there. Was a chav filled germ fest. Sure enough...

trumpisagit · 27/12/2021 20:29

@DsRevision
I don't think our family falls into any of your 3 categories (although nobody can be certain about 3).
At the moment I think we are just lucky and it's coming for us next!

TheSpiral · 27/12/2021 20:33

Most likely from my 11 year old in early November. Could have been a train to London, visit to the Tate, or an outdoor remembrance service the week before, but since I tested positive a day after the child who had 10 others in his class off sick, I am assuming it was him.

FindingMeno · 27/12/2021 20:35

Public transport I think.

**My theory is that those who seem to have missed it fall into 3 camps 1) the ultra cautious - still not going to shops etc2) those who don’t have school age kids and don’t have to go out to work. 3) those who are acting normally, working etc But I think these ( like you) have actually had it. Either early on before testing was available or they were asymptomatic**

interesting theory. However I think I fall into a 4th camp. I'm not being ultra cautious. Been out and about a fair bit, restaurants, they're etc. I work in health care seeing 20 or 30 patients a day, so getting constantly exposed. And I've also conducted antibody tests, so I know I didn't get any antibodies prior to my first vaccine a year ago ( ie never had Covid).

I think no 4 is probably along the lines of probs my have some sort of inherent immunity, which makes me less susceptible.

By the way just to add, I'm not entirely sure how healthy this thread is, although interesting. I think focussing on how you got Covid, or who gave it to you, could potentially be problematic. At the end of the day, a virus is gonna do what a virus does

Same. I've always followed the rules but not been any more cautious than that. I have two kids in school (one primary, one secondary) who have gone to school throughout, and DH and I have been out to work throughout. I've had two antibody tests - one summer 2020, one this summer, both were negative. I've also been doing lateral flow tests twice weekly for over a year, plus multiple PCRs for symptoms/close contacts, so I'm sure I've never had it. I do have a good immune system generally though and am rarely ill.

It’s so strange when a spouse/child gets it, the wife/mum don’t catch it, despite v close contact (sleeping in same bed for instance), but then they catch it months later from a more random source.

I fully appreciate for so many this has been awful, but I’m fascinated by how it is jumping around so easily with seemingly the majority following the guidelines. I’m feeling like it’s a combination of the asymptomatic and children being the main vectors.

Because ‘the guidelines’ don’t prevent a highly transmissible virus from spreading.

IpanemaPeaHen · 27/12/2021 20:40

We’ve had covid three times now in this house. Each time one of our children caught it at school. I’ve just feel done with it now, we are triple vaxed but kids bring it home from an environment which I can’t control.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 27/12/2021 20:41

My dh caught it last month. He works in a supermarket (he masks, but customers dont). We assume that is where he got it. Our two sons that still live with us caught it from him, even though they had very limited contact with him. On the other hand, I never caught it from any of them. I work in a school and have never caught it there either, but everyone in our school is masked (I'm in the USA). I dont understand how our sons caught it when they stayed away from him, but I was in a car with him coughing and coughing (before he tested, this is what made me tell him to test) and I never caught it.

Lovemylittlebear · 27/12/2021 20:41

Probably school

Vallmo47 · 27/12/2021 20:43

From my primary aged child, who caught it in school.

Cakeandcardio · 27/12/2021 20:44

There's also the possibility that you won't get it if you've been vaccinated. I know there's a lot of focus on people still being able to catch it / spread it even if vaccinated. But surely that's only a small per cent? I.e. the vaccines are 90% (or whatever it is) effective in stopping a person getting it.

BeckyB1983 · 27/12/2021 20:45

We got it from our 8 year old, there were 5 cases in his class in the end.
Me and my husband got it but my 2 year old never got it!

savagebaggagemaster · 27/12/2021 20:45

From one of my classes in school

This is me. Covid had already been through our house 3 times, with kids and DH getting it at different times. I never caught it despite not isolating. Presumably they all had delta and my double vaccine shielded me a bit.

Thereafter, a recent visit to a very crowded shop in London frequented by young men (teens and twenties), and omicron is now my friend.
