Feeling very nervous about teen dc getting their Covid jabs this week.

I have booked both my dc in to have their first Covid jabs this coming week.
I know I am being irrational in my thinking and for context I do have severe health anxiety (which I am seeing a professional about) but I am getting so very nervous about my 13 and 16 year old getting their jabs this week.
16 year old ds had Covid end of October and was fine with it, I totally appreciate that he may not have been.
It took me an age to get my jabs (first one made me feel so rough and I still feel off from time to time) but now the worry has transferred to concern about side effects after the jab in my dc.
They are more than happy to have the jabs (I don’t mention my worry to them at all, I keep that to myself) and I know they need them for when they return to school in Jan.
I just need to hear from people who’s dc have been fine after their jabs.

DD's had two, DS one, both fine after. Not so much when we all had covid.

I sometimes worry that it may not be helpful for MNers with health anxiety to post like this as it may feed the anxiety? But I don't know much about it so please ignore me if I'm completely wrong! Great that you're getting treatment OP and great that you've booked in for their vaccines and that you're not voicing your anxieties to them, well done.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/12/2021 11:17

I have a 12 yo, a 15 yo and a 16 yo and they have all been completely fine.

It sounds like you are handling this really well btw x

EmmaGellerGreen · 26/12/2021 11:17

DS is 13 and has had 2. Didn’t turn a hair with either.

kimlo · 26/12/2021 11:18

both of mine have neen fine with the jabs. Covid not so much.

MoiraNotRuby · 26/12/2021 11:21

My DS was v poorly with covid, he had jab a little too soon after (with hindsight) and felt rough for a week but no lasting problems. DD hasn't had covid, has had jab, was completely and utterly fine.

You are doing the right thing by your DC, well done.

LostThePot · 26/12/2021 11:53

My DC were all fine after their first jab and have their second ones booked in.

Only one of my DC has caught Covid and they were very poorly with it. Hoping being jabbed stops my other DCs from being so unwell if/when they get Covid.

JanisMoplin · 26/12/2021 11:58

Mine had his second two days ago. Perfectly fine. He also had covid In August. Mild case but tired for a while afterwards and study disrupted. He is doing A levels so wants to make sure he doesnt have to take time out again.

Jedstre · 26/12/2021 12:01

Mine had second jab a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely fine after both. Great you’re getting them done, despite how you’re feeling.

BlueJag · 26/12/2021 12:15

I don't think the older one needs the jab as he had covid in October. I'll delay his. There is no point. He is immune right now.

RedPandaWanda · 26/12/2021 12:34

BlueJag this is initially what I thought but there seems to be some conflicting info online I can’t find any clear cut info as to whether he should have the jab or not? My friends ds (same age) had Covid about 3 weeks after my ds and had his first jab a few days ago, he hasn’t been too well after the jab and I wasn’t sure if this was because he had Covid not that long ago?

12 - 15 year olds aren't allowed to have the jab if they've had covid in the last three months. Why would you vaccinate against something you've just had? My 12 year old had covid end of Nov. He won't be having a vaccination for a long while.

Whatdoyawannado · 26/12/2021 13:01

Oh, sorry, just re-read and realised it wasn't your younger one who had covid, so he can have his vaccination now. Older one I would definitely wait 3 months, minimum.

I’ll look into cancelling 16 year old ds until end of Jan.

I had a letter for the 2nd 12-15 jab saying to wait 12 weeks from covid.

It’s my 16 year old who had Covid, he caught the delta variant last week of October. My 13 year old dd hasn’t has Covid.

Ask a doctor rather than randoms on the internet whether your eldest should have the vaccine yet or not.
Statistically there are literally millions of kids the same age as yours who've had the vaccine with no side effects to speak of (mine had a temperature for 24 hours after her second)

RedPandaWanda · 26/12/2021 13:42

It’s all a bit confusing as the NHS website says you can get a jab 28 days after a Covid infection, other sites say you will have built up some immunity after infection so a wait of 3 months is ok yet I keep reading that people infected with Delta have no immunity to omicron??

JanisMoplin · 26/12/2021 13:43

OP likely can't get anywhere near her GP. I can't! But we got a letter asking DS to wait 12 weeks after Covid.

kimlo · 26/12/2021 13:47

it's 28 days for over 18's, 12 weeks fpr under 18's.

The 16 year old needs to wait 12 weeks from positive pcr.
The 13 year old can have it now.

Hamjamwich · 26/12/2021 13:48

My 15 year old has had first and second pfizer with no issues

LonginesPrime · 26/12/2021 14:11

They are more than happy to have the jabs (I don’t mention my worry to them at all, I keep that to myself)

As the daughter of a parent with lifelong health anxiety and horrendous health anxiety by proxy which still affects me decades later, I just wanted to say that it's fantastic that you acknowledge your own health anxiety and are making a conscious effort both to get professional help and to shield your DC from the effects of it.

Your DC are very lucky to have such a self-aware and pro-active parent, and I only wish my DM had been more like you!

Next available GP appointment is end of Jan. Random, conflicting advice online. I am actually asking others how their dc where after the jab NOT for medical advice. Sorry that you misinterpreted my post that way op.

Thank you. It’s because I too am a child (and grandchild) of a parent who suffered too so am sadly, like you aware of the damage it causes down the generations.

Totally pro vaccine but I admit I felt a bit unsure when news came out originally about children having it. I had a month or so until my one DD turned 12 at end of Nov and I was all for it by then due to the higher rates and her being at secondary school with lots of cases. Glad I did. No side effects barely even a sore arm, and good to be able to tell relatives we're all vaxxed!
