Are some people just naturally immune?

My friend hasn’t had any vaccines (not a crazy anti vaxxer, just hesitant currently).
She works in a local comprehensive, her partner works in retail. So both key workers.
She has never had covid as far as we’re aware, yet she’s been in contact with it several times through her job. She also has a child at pre school and they’ve been exposed to it, yet she’s never tested positive.
She thinks they all had it in the first wave in 2020 as they were all quite unwell then, but obviously tests didn’t exist in the same way as now.

Haven’t heard any research on that, but a lot of people are asymptomatic aren’t they?

HTPri · 26/12/2021 01:14

I’m triple jabbed now but have been exposed so many times and never caught it. My son age 7 had it the last week and we didnt distance or anything and I still haven’t caught it. I also taught a class for two weeks where there was an outbreak and didn’t catch it then. I dont want to tempt fate though!

Changemaname1 · 26/12/2021 01:17

Maybe just luck I’d imagine , iv got it now which is typical of me that it would be at Christmas 😏 but as far as I’m aware this is the first time

I have worked throughout , shopped every week Instore all the way through , socialised once was allowed and travelled including abroad etc etc I can see why people may think surely they’d have had it by now but as I say prob just luck !

Changemaname1 · 26/12/2021 01:18

I am double jabbed though to be fair altho not untill the end of the summer due to age

St0rmTr00per · 26/12/2021 01:18

We believe we all had it in March 2020. Had every symptom and I ended up in hospital as I couldn't breathe. Obviously no proof but think we did.

Since then all 4 DC have had it at seperate times. I have been their nurse and point of contact throughout and even hugged DS (additional needs) as he broke down a few times. Didn't catch it. I LFT twice weekly for safety with DS and havnt officially had it.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 26/12/2021 01:20

Apparently me nephew hasn't caught it even when his brother has had it twice and other family members had. Maybe he had it really early on or he has some immunity. He's too young got a vaccine and is regularly testing with LFTs

fallfallfall · 26/12/2021 01:23

well certainly out of the millions/billions of people on the face of the earth some will be.

dreamingbohemian · 26/12/2021 01:26

We are starting to wonder this

My DH is in food retail, DS in secondary school, we live in London.... Have tested a gazillion times, never positive

Even these last 2 weeks, with so many people we know testing positive and DH serving hundreds of customers a day... nada

It does seem weird

blueshoes · 26/12/2021 01:43

It makes sense that some people are naturally immune but the more likely explanation is that they caught it but were asymptomatic and acquired immunity and probably also since got jabbed anyway.

blueshoes · 26/12/2021 01:46

dHTPri when you got jabbed, did your body react at all to the jab?

Alayalaya · 26/12/2021 02:07

There will be some people who are immune. There always are. There are even some people who are immune to AIDS. Researchers are trying to identify these people so they can test them and maybe find a cure.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/12/2021 02:32

The only symptom either of my children had was a headache. I might have had the week before but didn't realise (worse migraine than I usually had).

Many people don't even realise they have had it. So would just appear "immune".

RoyalFamilyFan · 26/12/2021 03:12

I have a friend who has worked throughout with children, travels by public transport every day to work, and her partner had confirmed covid. Yet despite regular lateral flow tests and a PCR when partner had covid, has never tested positive.

MintJulia · 26/12/2021 03:43

Yes, I think so. One of my neighbours caught covid last year and was very poorly in hospital yet her dh (aged 82, retired gp) has powered on through without problems.

I think he must have developed a very broad immune system as a GP.

cantare · 26/12/2021 04:01

My DB, DSis and I never caught it. We are all adults, with children at school. DB is essential worker, his GF had it, they live together, but she did not isolate (no room), my Dsis is essential worker. I work in school. Our 82yo auntie caught it, but made full recovery. Our DPs did not catch it, but are v careful.
Looks like we have some protective genes, but I have no idea 🤷‍♀️
Oh, and only my DSis is triple vaccinated. The rest- not.

Don’t want to tempt fate but this is the exact same story as my husband and I. He’s a teacher in London, been in close contact with multiple confirmed cases and neither of us have tested positive yet,

Really hope I’ve not jinxed myself! 🤞🏽

DockOTheBay · 26/12/2021 05:07

Yes some people will have a strong immune system which fights off the virus before it gets to a level which would cause a positive test.
Also around 1 in 3 are asymptomatic.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/12/2021 05:29

I think I had it in March 2020. Tested regularly since we could get hold of lft. Dd not got it still. Unvaccinated. I’m double jabbed. Dh not had it either, triple jabbed now.

frenchiemummy92 · 26/12/2021 05:53

I wonder this too. DP had it last year in October me and our two DDs always tested negative on PCRs around the time he had it. Multiple cases since then in DD1s class and still she's never had a positive PCR.

We have had faint positive LFTs but this seems to be with the flowflex brand but every time it's followed with a PCR the results are negative.

My niece had it a few weeks ago and her mum & dad didn't catch it although they are triple jabbed and my other sisters little boy currently had it but every one else in the house is still testing negative 🤷🏻‍♀️.

ivykaty44 · 26/12/2021 06:00

I worked in front facing job most of covid. Dd got covid straight after Xmas last year and we’d been together 10 days over Xmas before she tested positive I never got covid and wasn’t vaccinated at that time.
So not sure why I didn’t get covid

TinaYouFatLard · 26/12/2021 06:06

FFS it’s a cold for the vast majority of people. Most of us will have had a cold since 2019.

itsgettingweird · 26/12/2021 06:20

I've asked this hypothetical many a time.

I had it last year when we went into Ld. Again no tests but have been to.d it was covid and was a very classic case of that variant.

I'm also now triple jabbed.

Also work in a school. I've been in contact with so many cases and haven't caught it. And I don't think I've had it asymptomatically because we test twice a week as a minimum (more when we have cases or I go places that require a test).

I think it must be something about immunity and possibly related to original strain.

I'm certainly not some super immunity to illness because this year I've caught every cold going and I had built up immunity to those through years of being in a classroom.

NOELnoelNOELnoel · 26/12/2021 06:28

To our knowledge, no one in our house has had it. Two kids in school, DH working out with with general public.

But, we aren't testing religiously. So we could have had it but without any symptoms. We all had a bad cough and cold Christmas 2020, but all consistently tested negative. So who knows.

AlinaSquareQueen · 26/12/2021 06:45

I feel as though I might be immune (or perhaps, insusceptible) to Covid.

I’m a secondary school TA, and have been VERY close to numerous confirmed cases, for hour-long lessons, over the past 21 months (on and off), and have tested negative every time, thankfully. Also, I’m mask-exempt, so it’s inexplicable that I haven’t caught it.

However, over half of my TA colleagues within our large department, have caught Covid, and some have been very unwell 🙁

I just feel very fortunate tbh.

ivykaty44 · 26/12/2021 06:48

TinaYouFatLard

Colds and flu haven’t been circulating last year and much of this due to masks and social distance.

This autum colds have been rife as masks and SD have until recently not been required, but with symptoms people will have tested or should have done
