Horrific nausea still going on 23 days after testing positive - any tips please!

I tested positive for Covid on the 3rd Dec. Luckily my symptoms were pretty mild and I'm mostly better. I just can't shake the awful nausea though. It's not all the time - it comes in waves. I'm feeling very sorry for myself today though as my Christmas dinner was toast. I just can't eat anything and the thought of food is still making me feel sick.

Has anyone else had nausea that's gone on this long? Does it ever end?! I'm thinking of trying to find a chemist that's open tomorrow and trying some anti-sickness medication. If it carries on for much longer I think I'm going to have to try and get a GP appointment but obviously that won't be possible for a few days now.

Does anyone have any tips or medication they can recommend please?

Thanks for reading.

Any chance you’re pregnant?

Toomanyminifigs · 25/12/2021 18:53

Thanks for the reply. No, I'm firmly in menopause but the sickness does remind me of morning sickness. I think I will have to try and see a GP if it carries on for much longer. I did wonder if it could appendicitis.

I had this. Mine was so bad I was in hospital. The only thing that knocked it on the head was called Odanestron (sp?) which they gave me in hospital after other nausea meds didn't work.. Have you spoken to GP? Yu could try Buccastem from chemist or some travel sickness medicine.

My nausea lasted about 6 weeks, hate to say!

Huy456 · 25/12/2021 19:01

Eating salty crispy foods helped me. Avoiding plain, fatty foods.
Better now but still a constant weird taste

Piggyinblankets · 25/12/2021 19:04

Me too Sad. And weird smells.

Toomanyminifigs · 25/12/2021 19:10

Thank you for replying. It makes me feel a bit better to know I'm not the only one who's had this. Although I'm sorry to hear you've both had it - it is so draining isn't it?

I'm trying to see the positive side thinking at least I won't be putting on any weight over Christmas!

I suspect I may have had Omicron as I live in London and I had none of the 'classic three symptoms' but I don't know that for sure.

Thanks for letting me know that it WILL end at some point.

I’ve seen another thread asking this over the last couple of days.

Huy456 · 25/12/2021 19:23

Mine was definitely delta as was before omicron. Sinuses were really bad, ended up with antibiotics as the pain wouldn't shift for weeks. Still tired a couple of months on but fine if I take it easy, which I'd really recommend!

BallstoJingle · 25/12/2021 19:27

I was admitted to hospital with covid as I kept being sick. Nothing would stop it and I worked through three lots of anti sickness meds.

I had to have fluids and have been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency. I was in for a week.

Get to a doctor when you can and get checked out.

Toomanyminifigs · 25/12/2021 19:37

Thank you all. It's not great timing, it being Christmas and everything like GP surgeries and chemists being shut.

I can keep water down me but I've not been able to face a mince pie in nearly three weeks now so I know I'm definitely not well!

I wasn't sure if a GP would be able to do much but I will definitely make an appointment when they open.

This virus can throw up such random symptoms can't it? I thought I had got off lightly. I guess I have in that I've not been in hospital but I'm finding the sickness very hard now.

@Toomanyminifigs I have the nausea too, it’s just like morning sickness or travel sickness. Comes and goes in waves. I suspect I caught omicron last weekend in London. Still waiting for pcr result but pretty sure it’s covid as all LFT’s are strong positives.

Finding small bites to eat regularly is better than large meals. Just like when you have morning sickness.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/12/2021 19:47

My great grandmother thought she was firmly in menopause until she had a baby at 50.

Signoramarella · 25/12/2021 19:50

Call 111 for advice. I was tested positive on 2nd Dec and have dizziness and lethargy now, on nasal spray for sinuses. The nausea only lasted a week thank god. 111 are brilliant anc can suggest a Dr calls you back and you can get med prescribed over the phone and pick it up tomorrw, monday. Please do call them. I was so shit about a week in I was in A and E.

Toomanyminifigs · 25/12/2021 20:02

@Lemons1571. You poor thing! It sounds exactly what I've got. I can only hope it doesn't last this long for you. I keep reading about people recovering from Covid within a couple of days. Of course I'm pleased for them but I have started to get a bit depressed that it's going on so long for me.

Aquamarine1029. That is incredible! I would actually love another child. I'm in my late 40s now so maybe there is still hope!

I did wonder about calling 111. I didn't realise they could organise a doctor who could issue prescriptions. Thanks for the tip.

Did you lose you sense of smell & taste? I did and even though it came back after about two weeks my tummy wasnt right for about a month.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

Toomanyminifigs · 25/12/2021 20:35

Thank you. I didn't lose my taste or smell. I had almost no symptoms at the start which is why I was surprised by how how hard the sickness has hit me.

I've managed a bag of salted crisps just now. What a Christmas Dinner!

Maybe your gut biome has been disturbed?? It can take months to recover but that's usually after gastric. Try some Yakult or similar.

quiteathome · 26/12/2021 09:19

Dialorlyte (sp?) helped with mine. Flat cola. Plain biscuits

I had vomiting and nausea both times I had Covid. Still get periods of nausea now. :-( Although I think that is possibly something else now.

(Had Covid in January)

Bobholll · 26/12/2021 10:44

OP - you can get anti-sickness over the counter - it’s called Buccastem & usually used for sickness with migraine. I find it really effective for the severe nausea I get with occasional migraines. Also, if you ever feel dizzy or lightheaded, try Sturgeron which is a travel sickness tablet. Also anti-sickness and helps you feel less spinny!

Could be worth trying a regular probiotic as well, get some good bacteria in your gut! I use biokult. It’s a bit pricey but good stuff!

Piggyinblankets · 26/12/2021 11:57

I suggested Buccastem upthread too - wortha shot : not all chemists stock it. It is good but didn't touch the sides of Covid nausea. Also second travel sickness stuff but, at the end of the day, if it is bad , only a doctor can prescribe the hard stuff. In fact it was only the hospital that gave me the stuff that worked, which I now have stockpiled!

gulliblestravels · 26/12/2021 12:13

Thanks for the advice here. It is horrible, the dizziness and nausea. Almost panic-inducing 😢

PrincessConsuelaCrapBag · 26/12/2021 14:31

My son seems to be suffering with the nausea and sickness covid. I'm started to get concerned. He's on day six after test but still doesn't want to eat😔

Silkieschickens · 26/12/2021 14:42

My gastric symptoms lasted about 6 weeks and ended up in hospital on a drip but afterwards tests came back showing camplobaceter as well as covid, so you may be worth if persists getting tested for other things. Important to keep hydrated and right balance of nutrients, which includes some salt, I had to avoid dairy. I have since been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and have suspected adrenal condition which probably would not have helped and may have lengthened things, normally have an iron stomach though. Mine was in September / October and double vaccinated then. Its common to get secondary things with it whilst immune system down.

Silkieschickens · 26/12/2021 14:45

No medicine worked for me and probiotics made it worse, only the drip helped and changing diet to similar to a drip. Probably depends how bad yours is.

AnotherMansCause · 26/12/2021 14:52

If there is any chance you could be pregnant I'd take a test before getting anti nausea medication. I used to take buccastem & it's contraindicated in pregnancy apparently.
