Has anyone managed to avoid Omicron in the household?

My DH has it and is on day four. The rest of us (me and three DC) are still testing negative. But I can't believe it won't get us eventually...our Christmas hinges on it so I'm trying not to get my hopes up. I've had my booster...

It seems DH and DS have managed it. DD and I tested positive last week, and have just started getting negative LFTs which I guess we’re not infectious anymore. We haven’t been keeping apart particularly; our flat is too small and the children are young (and it’s too cold to have windows open all day). DD and I had very mild cases; just light cold symptoms for a few days, and DH had his booster the week before, so that might have helped. Fingers crossed that you can swerve it!

@TyotyaKlava

How do you find out what variant of COVID you have? My dd (4) caught it first on Thursday 9.12, tested positive on Monday 13.12. I got it next on Thursday 16.12, then my husband on Saturday 18.12, and finally my dd (7) on Monday 20.12. Not sure whether it’s omicron as test and trace people never specified that. How do we find out?
Only a proportion of tests are genetically sequenced I believe about 20%. They may have stopped letting those people know as it’s now dominant.
Mrsfrumble · 22/12/2021 19:50

I’m only guessing we had omicron as A: we’re in London where apparently 90% of cases are omicron, and B: the severity, length and description of symptoms fits what we had.

paranoidnamechanger · 22/12/2021 19:53

Yep, and millions of others.

@phoebemcpeepee

Well I might be tempting fate by posting this, but Dc and DH have just finished 10 days of isolation and so far, I'm still negative (daily morning lft) despite them very much being around me in the house and sharing a bed with DH! No kissing, sharing drinks, towels etc but otherwise carried on as normal at home and both had a mild but upper respiratory/ head cold like symptoms so assume it's omni.

I'm double jabbed but postponed my booster until next week as it was just when they got Covid and I was convinced I'd get it too. I will keep dong daily tests as we have family due to arrive Christmas Day that I wouldn't want to risk but feel by then I must have somehow dodged it.

Gosh you've done well, clearly a good immune system! I'm nearly into day 5 and still testing negative and symptom free but still don't want to get my hopes up as there's so much riding on it this week. Great to hear of people avoiding it within the home.

DH has had it - he's on day 7, apart from sleeping in separate rooms and no snogging (but we did have sex because we're bad at being told we can't do something - no kissing though, romantic 🤣) we've done nothing differently. I had a negative PCR a few days ago and negative LFTs the whole time!

I put it down to having been boosted but I only had the booster the day before he got a positive LFT.

StylishDuck · 22/12/2021 20:52

Nope. I tested positive (LFT then confirmed by PCR) on Wed last week. Everyone else negative PCR at the time. DH and DD had positive LFT then PCRs by Mon and DS had a positive LFT this morning (PCR results pending). My isolation period technically ends tomorrow but we won't all be in the clear until nearly New Year.

StylishDuck · 22/12/2021 20:54

Should add I don't know that it's Omicron but all the symptoms would suggest it is.

Soccermum13 · 22/12/2021 21:18

Sorry to hear that StylishDuck. We may well be in the same boat by the end of the week.

CoffeeWithCheese · 22/12/2021 22:03

Kids both have had what I assume was omicron for the last week and me and DH haven't picked it up yet - and DD2 is a very very tactile little soul who wants to give me lots of cuddles and use me as a seat at any opportunity going.

2 initial jabs - no booster.

LSLLM · 22/12/2021 22:41

DH tested positive this week.

Kids and I had covid 6 months ago. Our LFTs are negative so far

I’m boosted and confirmed antibodies last week. Now we await…. Grin

Whathefisgoingon · 23/12/2021 09:55

Apparently if you’re in the same room as someone with covid and unvaccinated, you’re going to get it. Of course you can still get it if vaccinated but the chance is lower.

Whathefisgoingon · 23/12/2021 09:55

That was meant to say Omicron, not just covid.

Chanel05 · 23/12/2021 10:25

@Whathefisgoingon quite possibly. I was in the same room as 4 unvaccinated people end of last week , very close contact, all day, hugs etc and none of them have covid.

theneverendinglaundry · 23/12/2021 16:43

Interesting to read these replies. My DH and 2 of my children tested positive this morning, but me and the other DC are negative! I'm hoping I avoid it so I can at least go out to get essentials. I certainly won't be doing anything other than that just in case.

Soccermum13 · 23/12/2021 20:02

Good luck! I'm going into day 6 and still ok and testing negative - but daren't quite believe it yet. If I do swerve this I owe it all to the booster I'm sure.

Interested to hear if you managed to avoid it ?
Sausagedogsarethebest · 28/12/2021 20:52

My daughter tested positive on Boxing Day and her bf, who lives with us, tested positive the following day. Both of them double jabbed, aged 20 and 22. I'm so far testing negative and I'm 58 and double jabbed and boosted. My DD had a sore throat and cold symptoms and complains most about back ache. My elder DD has gone to stay with her bf as she isn't vaxxed at all.

Soccermum13 · 28/12/2021 21:22

Sorry, once into Christmas period it got hectic....but yes, in the end I managed to avoid it - and I do attribute that wholly to the booster. I was with my DH for at least 48 hours (including sleeping next to him coughing all night) when he was probably most infectious....I'm very grateful to have got away with it as it meant we were able to travel on Boxing Day and see family for a few days, rather than not see them again (second year running) for another few months. Made the world of difference.

Yes, my DH had the exact same symptoms, sore throat (for one day) sniffly and a bit of lower back pain. But all gone after 2/3 days....

Have avoided covid full stop...so far.
All family members vaccinated and boostered.
I work in the NHS and everybody else is out working or university.
Wear masks at work and when out and about. Use hand cleanser.
Have been to several super spreader events ie. Britsh F1, rugby, concerts, been overseas by plane.
Think we've just been lucky

I would have said exactly the same - had travelled abroad, been to rugby, football, 50s birthday parties, restaurants etc - while vaccinated and boosted - and very lucky...until we weren't. The thing that did it in the end was a business meeting in London where all four did lfts first (and had been boosted - except my DH) and wore masks on public transport there and back. It's pure luck I've decided, all you can do is minimise your risk. But tbh it was so mild, if it hadn't been for the terrible timing (missing Christmas with family) it wouldn't have been a problem.

@soccermum13
DH has been really poorly over Christmas with strep throat, been in bed for 3 days and is now on antibiotics. We're about to cancel our NY plans and DS wants to go to Nottingham for NYE party and I am about to have the 'I don't think you should go' conversation for just the reason you described in your post. Think we would be pushing our luck!
