I'm done.
Once again they're shutting the damn country (going off the Scotland news today) down for what? A cold for most people!
Yes a few people have died but less than ten with this new variant. What about all those with cancer who have died not being seen quick enough?

We cannot cope with another lockdown.
Taxes are through the fucking roof. Prices are through the roof in April fuel prices will be £2,000 a year!!! How is the average joe bloggs going to pay that?
How can we keep going when the government is destroying this country time and time again!
We've had our jabs. Yet they still insist on giving away billions we cannot afford to businesses who are STILL OPEN.
My mental health can't take it anymore, and there's no point directing me to MH services as they can't cope with the overwhelming pressures either!!
When does this shit end?!

I totally agree with you OP.
It’s not the disease that’s putting pressure on the NHS, it’s all the enforced isolation of in-contacts.
Meanwhile the economy goes down the pan, businesses close, people lose their jobs etc.

emmathedilemma · 21/12/2021 19:55

@EmiliaC but it's 1m social distancing which possibly excludes a lot of events / activities. The gyms are already posting that they'll update members with info as soon as possible so that's probably going to be us back to pre booking sessions to restrict capacity and same for classes, swimming pools. No word on what this means for amateur sport yet either. Oh, and we're already back to working from home guidance and masks everywhere indoors which prevents some people partaking in things they normally would. That's not luxuries IMO, it's people's mental and physical health and wellbeing that's in jeopardy again.

Not sure if you're in Scotland, but essential workers are exempt from isolation due to being a contact up here. It's likely they'll introduce that in England and the rest of the UK (if it isn't already in place) before the economy collapses.

Sending love, @RoastedParsnips, because right now you sound like you need a big cuddle.

But they're not actually closed, so nothing is being taken away from anyone. It's just a case of booking in advance. And working from home is guidance, not law.

Some things have got to give in the middle of a pandemic (we're not even 2 years in yet) and wearing a mask and standing 1m away from someone outwith your own social group (we're 'permitted' to stand close to those we're going out socialising with) isn't even especially far away?

I'm with you, OP, and I'm not in Scotland. I'm just so sick of this. Flowers

pinkmink · 21/12/2021 20:13

I totally agree OP. You can’t lock down a whole country just because the health system is chronically underfunded.

I sometimes find it odd when people talk about the impact on mental health. It might just be how I think about it but, to me, mental health issues are conditions that have a profound impact on people’s lives due to deep rooted issues.

Because of the pandemic, we have locked tons of people indoors, bombarded them with horrible news and made their lives horrible. This has made people feel like shite. To me it seems like people are in situational crisis rather than having MH issues. If that makes sense?

ArthurTudor · 21/12/2021 20:17

I understand you are frustrated. I don't want to get into the ins and outs of what action should be taken - It is impossible to please everyone.

However, this part of your post bothered me

Yes a few people have died but less than ten with this new variant

A few people...a few hundred thousand in the UK alone. I find your comment distasteful. Also, the Omicron threat, from what I understand, isn't about fear of deaths - it's about large numbers of infections leading to more hospitalisations. Which in turn impacts on treating other medical issues. Your cancer point was clearly explained by Chris Whitty last week - if hospitals are full of covid/staff off they can't treat problems like cancer.

Weasel2020 · 21/12/2021 20:20

Year after year there are posts like this. The nhs could do with more money sure. But they waste a fuck ton on contractors too. Pretty much every winter at least one trust declares a major incident. Every year! Just now people can blame covid/ the unvaccinated/staff shortages. I haven't seen my parents in over 2 years and my dad is 72 because they live in France. Great, he is healthy but for how long? Life isn't guaranteed.

My partner had a medical condition recently. Although the admin has been shocking (saying he missed appointments when he didnt) the care has been second to none. The nhs needs an overhaul and it has done for years.

And I love the fact that since brexit/covid everyone is a fucking politician. I wouldn't want to a government official during these times

Emilia "Some things have got to give in the middle of a pandemic (we're not even 2 years in yet)"

How long are you expecting it to be?

Well, hopefully not much longer!

There were hopeful reports from scientists a few months ago that this might be a cold by next spring/summer. We can only hope that's what's going on here with omicron (or the next variant).

DaisyNGO · 21/12/2021 20:36

Thanks Emilia
That sounded like you were expecting at least 10! 😱

AffIt · 21/12/2021 20:41

You're getting at angry at the wrong people, OP.

Those who may be furloughed are just people, like you - workers, or small to medium-sized business owners.

Get angry at the government that allows its billionaire mates off the hook when it comes to paying taxes, or worse, adds to their coffers by awarding them dodgy contracts.

That should be the real focus of your ire.

Oh no. Don't get me wrong. I'm super duper angry at the government like to the point I want to go protest outside number ten and yell abuse at Boris and his cronies angry. Why can't we have Teresa may back? She was rubbish for Brexit, but even she is saying we have to live with the virus. She'd be awesome now as prime minister. It's not fair. We need Boris out! Can't we set up some sort of mumsnet political party? Grin
