Will you send your DC to school if they're open for keyworkers only?

Hopefully this won't happen but if it does (probably with hours' notice like last Jan Angry)...

DH and I both qualified as keyworkers (medical supplies) for all the previous lockdowns. We could WFH though so kept the DC at home so they weren't taking up spaces really needed by others and to minimise the risk to the school staff. The DC got on with it but both struggled socially and DD in particular fell very behind academically.

Now that everyone who wants a vaccine has had at least 2, if there's another partial school closure I'll be prioritising my DC and sending them in.

What are you planning to do?

I'm a key worker my kids went to educare for lockdown 1 and were at home with exh for lockdown 2. Only upside of being at home was lonely dd2 could team chat with her bestie and others and they did this for hours each day. Saved her mh I think.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/12/2021 16:39

My child's school offered part of the week (I know some only said full time or no time), so she went in 3 days a week. She didn't go in during the first lockdown, even though I was in school during that one. They rang and offered last Xmas, which is why I took it.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 20/12/2021 16:40

They did no learning though. It was childcare and social contact.

@VaccineSticker

Lockdown or no lockdown I’m afraid that most of the school children and their families who will come down with omicron and are going to isolate. The idea is to slow down the domino effect and not end up all ill with it to the point that essential services are completely broken. All the key workers are going to catch it in the next few weeks. There’s no doubt it, this time round is very different to previous waves. It’s going to come fast and hopefully go fast, but it will infect everyone standing in the way. Be prepared to isolate again and home school even if you have had covid recently. Reinfection with omicron is high. They know this. This is why they are begging retired teachers to come back and help out in the next few weeks. Our essential services are going to break down.
Unfortunately, I think you are on the right lines.
Senmumm2021 · 20/12/2021 16:41

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot they definitely did do learning. It was a full timetable in my DC's school. Those at home either kept up or didn't.

FindingMeno · 20/12/2021 16:42

Yes. I will. Exams looming.

NoEffingWay · 20/12/2021 16:42

Yes. DS went to school throughout the second lockdown and was 1000% happier than our pisspoor attempt at homeschooling.

Omicrone · 20/12/2021 16:52

God, I have really come to loathe the term 'key worker' - and I am one!

Comedycook · 20/12/2021 16:53

Why are they begging retired teachers to help out?

I think they are doing this not so that they have an army of people to step in but are in fact just preparing us for school closures.

Me too. If you are working to pay the rent or mortgage and to put food on the table you are a key worker in my opinion! Who will pay to support millions of families if they can't work?
HarryLimeFoxtrot · 20/12/2021 16:59

They will be in school (and I’m going to keep physically going in to work this time too). We all hated being stuck in the house. Never again! By the time schools go back both DC will be double vaccinated (I’m already triple vaccinated). We’ve also already had covid.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/12/2021 14:35

My older two boys cannot afford to be off school. They have SEN and are in the special needs class - they have always been behind and I can't let them fall further back. Also I work full time, while husband doesn't, he is severely dyslexic and would be of limited use with home learning - my kids simply don't have the capacity to learn on their own yet.

Their little brother however, I would be fine with him being at home.

JustABloodyMinute · 21/12/2021 17:03

Given that our school seemed to be full of kids whose parents were WFH last time I'd be looking to send mine in this time. We are both WFH albeit we are "key workers" (hate that term) but kept them at home to leave places for people who genuinely needed them.

It's genuinely a cold. They are going the fuck to school. Yes I am a key worker.

CarrieBlue · 21/12/2021 17:40

Yea I think Past a certain age covid patients need not take a hospital bed- if you ask me what’s more important, the life of a 90yr old or the livlihood of a 30year old with children- sorry I pick the latter

A 30 year-old with a view like yours? I pick the 90 year old every time, and no fake ‘sorry’ about it at all.

Covidworries · 21/12/2021 17:42

@onlyfoolsnmothers
And if they are young covid patients. Do that get care?

Yes

You may think I’m callous but the idea that it’s ok to keep ruining businesses, destroying mental health and fucking over education is frankly ridiculous- if the vaccines don’t work then hard choices need to be made.

Yes I agree. We don't generally put preserving life above everything else...if we did, we'd have banned cars and all modes of transport by now...not to mention alcohol and fast food.
cantkeepawayforever · 21/12/2021 18:10

The thing is - as the teacher daughter of parents in their 80s - I am completely unwilling to patronise the entertainment business of the 30 year olds, and am increasingly unwilling to deliver in-person education to children if such a policy is adopted. If you refuse my parents the healthcare they need, then I will change my behaviour - I will not teach, I will not use businesses except online, I will not shop. I don't see how this helps?

Don’t have children?
Explosivefarts · 21/12/2021 19:55

I’m glad that Nicola Sturgeon has announced schools in Scotland will be returning as normal after Christmas. I’m glad she made the announcement before the kids break up tomorrow.

cantkeepawayforever · 21/12/2021 20:48

Don’t have children?

Yes - this is Mumsnet?

cantkeepawayforever · 21/12/2021 20:50

I don’t understand how allowing their grandparents to die by denying them medical care is meant to be GOOD for my children?
