Three options on the table - a guessing game

It's the question we're all asking - are new restrictions going to be imposed in England to control Omicron, and if so, when?
Quote from the BBC:
“Our chief political correspondent Adam Fleming tells us that civil servants have prepared a "menu of three options" that range in stringency, according to a Whitehall source. Ministers are yet to make a choice.”

Anyone want to guess what they are?

@fourdayholiday

IcedPurple that was a lockdown, as was that in Italy. Not delightful I agree. Consistently enforced, sometimes by military personnel.

Hence my refusal to call the restrictions in the UK a lockdown.

So lockdowns that don't involve shutting children in small apartments for weeks on end are not a 'lockdown'?

But schools shut, nowhere open other than supermarkets, stay at home orders, playgrounds cordoned off and the criminalisation of visiting family members, that's simply 'restrictions'?

But you can call it whatever you want. It's obvious to most people it was a lockdown.

TheKeatingFive · 20/12/2021 14:45

We have never had a lockdown

What do people think they're achieving with these comments?

If you're not welded in it doesn't count? 😵‍💫

fourdayholiday · 20/12/2021 14:54

What happened between March and July 2020, for four weeks in November 2020 and between January and May/June 2021 was awful, and in particular had the Prime Minister acted quickly on each occasion would each time have been a much shorter period of restrictions. In particular some school opening could have taken place in the summer term of 2020, and at least 20,000 fewer people would have died.

Harry Hill (qualified medical doctor) and I just happen to use correct language.

Definitelymaybenot · 20/12/2021 14:54

If we want to prevent 5,000 deaths a day, it should be option 3. No brainer.

But it will be option 1. Because you know, Brexiteers and the cheeseboards.

What a joke.

Good luck to the NHS and all those unvaccinated numpties.

Newpuppymummy · 20/12/2021 14:58

Why 8pm?

I think maybe hospitality only outside. Limits of how many households mix.

My husband is a “qualified medical doctor” and he calls it a lockdown, if finding one “qualified medical doctor” who agrees with you is relevant.

How would you define a lockdown then, if it being literally against the law to leave your own house save in specified circumstances isn’t sufficient?

IcedPurple · 20/12/2021 15:09

Harry Hill (qualified medical doctor) and I just happen to use correct language.

Being a 'qualified medical doctor' doesn't mean you get to define what a lockdown is or isn't.

"Lockdown" was a word most of us had never used this time 2 years ago, including qualified medical doctor Harry Hill.

Being legally forbidden to leave your home or visit family members counts as a lockdown in most people's eyes, but if you want to rehash a tired political agenda about how 'proper lockdowns', including forbidding children to play outdoors, would have somehow 'worked', even when it's plain that they did not, I can't be arsed to get into a discussion with you.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 20/12/2021 15:13

The issue with option 1 is that humans are bad at risk assessing longer term, less visible risks. It's a well understood psychological challenge.

We've evolved to be ok in a crisis, with a Saber toothed tiger pouncing at Us, but pretty useless in things that are less immediately damaging to us personally, like climate change.

Whichjab · 20/12/2021 15:15

If It's gets as bad as the worst case, good luck to all of us. Catching covid will be the least of our problems.

Whammyyammy · 20/12/2021 15:49

@IcedPurple

Are we back to talking about 'proper lockdowns'?

Maybe like in Spain, with the delightful policy of locking children in their homes for weeks on end?

How miserable.

Agreed. Yet some people on here are frothing at the mouth for it??? They must live such sad, boring, unfulfilled lives
rrhuth · 20/12/2021 16:06

@Dentistlakes

I think he’ll go for option 2. Option 1 would be pointless and we can’t afford 3.
I agree option 1 would be pointless.

My guess if Johnson will go for option 1, because he himself is pointless.

We can't afford option 1, option 2 or option 3, they all cost shitloads.

rrhuth · 20/12/2021 16:07

@Whammyyammy

I see no one 'frothing at the mouth', you are just making things up.

Evereyone is fucking pissed off we are here again.

HarrietPierce · 20/12/2021 17:27

No one is " frothing at the mouth for it???" @Whammyyammy, apart from in your head.

TheKeatingFive · 20/12/2021 17:29

So it wasn't a lockdown because Harry Hill said so.

What? Confused

worriedatthemoment · 20/12/2021 17:31

@Newpuppymummy hospitality outside in winter isn't viable and most places then have to shut and they don't then get any help
If they are going to do any restrictions like that then financially they have to be responsible as well to business, workers etc
We all need to eat and pay our bills if they are going to put curfews , restrictions etc then get the cheque book out as well

worriedatthemoment · 20/12/2021 17:33

@TheKeatingFive yes him who gave up being a dr a good few years ago and who prob lived in a nice big home is financially comfortable so staying home is all good

IcedPurple · 20/12/2021 17:38

@TheKeatingFive

So it wasn't a lockdown because Harry Hill said so.

What? Confused

Well, I guess it's better than Benny Hill.

Because Harry Hill is a 'qualified medical doctor'.

Apparently.

whenwillthemadnessend · 20/12/2021 18:19

@IcedPurple

Harry hill is actually a
Qualified doctor.

Google it.

So what?

There are thousands of 'qualified doctors'. One on every street up and down the land.

What makes this Henry Hill so special?

Why is his view so important to you?

whenwillthemadnessend · 20/12/2021 21:35

I don't even know what a Harry shill has said. I didn't post the original comment about him. Just pointing out he is a doctor

God everyone is so snippy on her at the moment. Any one would think it Christmas soon. GrinWineXmas Wink

shinynewapple21 · 20/12/2021 22:15

Assume leaked photos / videos from within the Tory Party far right who don't want further restrictions - I think they have had the intended effect.

The options ?

Option 1 - anyone who would comply is already doing this so not sure if this would change anything .

Option 2 - I don't get the point of curfews - surely it just means more overcrowding early evening then back to someone's house to continue the party .

Option 3 - can't see full lockdown happening .

To me, option 2 around hospitality would make sense if it was back to social distancing and table service, maybe masks when moving around . But no curfew .

shinynewapple21 · 20/12/2021 22:22

Ah OK @goodnightsugarpop have read your post re the curfews, I get what you are saying .
