To think rates are going down because people are choosing not to have PCRs?

Two of my friendship group have this weekend told me that they have symptoms, have got a positive lateral flow, but have decided not to go for a PCR test as a positive result means they would have to isolate over Christmas.

Instead they are going to carry on with their lives as normal for the next few days ‘because it would be a shame to have to make the children stay home’ with them.

Personally I think it’s a disgrace but anyway…

AIBU to think the drop in rates over the past few days is not because Covid cases are falling but instead because selfish people don’t want to isolate until 28th Dec?

@ChangeChingyChange

My daughter technically had symptoms for 2 days and I put my head in the sand to it. She had a runny nose and cough but she does have asthma. She's absolutely fine now though so I know its not covid and she's OK but lesson learned I should just do LFTs and accept the outcome instead of putting my head in the sand. I'm just desperate for her not to miss Christmas with the in laws which I know is silly really Blush
That probably was Covid . My dd had virtually no symptoms at all. Getting better doesn’t mean it isn’t Covid, children are often not very unwell .
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/12/2021 17:08

I think the same OP. If they aren't seeing anyone vulnerable over Christmas then a PCR could ruin their day so they'll just see how they are later in the week. Hopefully they'll stay home but T&T won't hassle them and they won't be in trouble if they're out.

This is just due to the weekend though. It's not a sustained drop. It will be back up tomorrow
Franklin12 · 19/12/2021 17:09

People are so self absorbed in their own situation. That is why they do what they do.

Kids are the worst case in that they don’t tend to have symptoms so you could persuade yourself it’s ‘just a cold’ and not do a test so close to Xmas.

BlackCatz · 19/12/2021 17:10

I totally believe people will avoid testing this week. I don't blame them in the slightest.

Bunnyfuller · 19/12/2021 17:10

No, we’ve had record numbers Thursday was 93k!

AlternativePerspective · 19/12/2021 17:12

I have never seen a thread where OP has had to re-explain herself so many times that’s because you’re not making sense. You’re saying that rates have dropped which is untrue.

There’s an argument that people aren’t currently testing meaning that rates are likely higher than they are showing, but that’s different to saying that the rates have dropped when the time you’re referring to is a weekend when rates always seem lower.

@Beebopawhop

I know people who have had lateral flows the whole family but haven't done pcrs because they are doing the right thing and isolating their 10 days. I don't know anyone who would carry on with a positive lft that's ridiculous. And kids don't have symptoms so how did the pp know her daughter didn't have COVID after she finished her runny nose symptoms!!! It's ridiculous that but the not going for PCR is quite common
In the situation you describe, the non-positive family members may need to isolate for longer than the initial 10 days of the first positive case. For example, they may not catch covid until day 5 of the 10 days and so their 10 days would start from then. If no-one is testing, they have no way of knowing when the rest of the family’s 10 days start from. I’m baffled by how clueless people are 2 years into this!

I blame them totally, prioritizing their own enjoyment over the health of everyone else.

Are you absolutely shitting us? You would or would condone people not testing and walking amongst others just so they can avoid isolating and having insta Christmas?

FFS!

JustDanceAddict · 19/12/2021 17:15

You’re supposed to log positive LFs online

Eggybrains · 19/12/2021 17:15

@ChangeChingyChange my jaw is on the floor.

Isolate and get her a PCR.

Don’t be so selfish

Frazzled2207 · 19/12/2021 17:15

OP
Fairly sure you’re wrong. Cases will be super high on Tuesday and if they’re not it will be because the pcr system can’t cope.
Lots of people don’t do pcrs but that doesn’t mean they don’t isolate.
Some like me just didn’t want T&T on my case. I let my close contact know.

But anyway. What difference does it make?

It’s hospitalisations we should be watching right now. They are rising quite alarmingly. But not not as alarmingly as the sickness rate for NHS staff.

AlternativePerspective · 19/12/2021 17:20

Well, there’s apparently a meeting this afternoon to discuss possible further restrictions. So if they close non essential and hospitality then people aren’t going to be wandering around much are they?

So the people they’re potentially putting at risk are their own families. Way to go.

Senmumm2021 · 19/12/2021 17:21

@AlternativePerspective they won't shut either. The lockdown proposed is effectively not a lockdown.

100problems · 19/12/2021 17:22

But not not as alarmingly as the sickness rate for NHS staff.

Firefighters
Police
Supermarket staff
Transport staff
Army personnel

Quite important too.

@ChangeChingyChange aren't you even embarrassed to have written your post? We both had "colds" and are LFT and PCR positive. No way would I leave the bloody house for 10 days.

Icequeen01 · 19/12/2021 17:23

@ImaginaryCat

When DD had 2 positive LFTs I didn't see the point in doing a PCR. We knew she had it, we isolated her, tested the rest of the household, reacted accordingly. I only bothered with a PCR in the end because school needed it to accurately record her absence. Otherwise it seemed redundant. To the people above implying there are loads of reasons for doing a PCR, aside from contributing to statistics, what are those reasons?
I really do think it is something you should have recorded in your medical records. I also need evidence so I continue to get paid!

Utterly despicable behaviour of you.

🤦‍♀️

Most dc with covid have symptoms for only a couple of days. You should still PCR test, and if positive isolate for 10 days even if the symptoms go before that.

lovescats3 · 19/12/2021 17:24

If you test positive on lat flow you can report it and order home PCR test to be posted to you

Mumoftwoinprimary · 19/12/2021 17:24

I’m not sure I agree. If people were not testing because of ruining Xmas then they would have stopped testing on Monday (I remember when I did my usual test on Sunday night “ok - I hope this isn’t positive but if I have to get a positive then today is better than Thursday….) and the testing numbers were really high Monday to Thursday. Numbers haven’t been released beyond then for testing so I guess it is possible that they will go down after that.

OrinoccoFlew · 19/12/2021 17:25

Can’t believe they know they probably have Covid and are going to carry on and infect people - selfish behaviour in the extreme. And this sums society up.

rightsideoftheroad · 19/12/2021 17:26

Sometimes there is no need for a PCR. My DP had covid, did the pcr which was positive. We didn't bother doing pcrs for the rest of us as we were each struck down with it, just lat flows. We still isolated and stayed in til tested negative. What's the point otherwise? Just so track and trace know? No thanks.
