Are you going to routine appointments at the moment?

I have been going to all my/the dc’s regular appointments for months now and not thought much of it.

However I have a routine mammogram on Thursday and wondering if I should cancel or postpone given the warning I have just read that there will be a ‘tsunami’ of omicron cases in the next fortnight in my area. I obviously don’t want to risk being ill over Christmas with teenage dc and elderly parents reliant on me.

As I’m writing I am thinking I should cancel and rearrange!

I wouldn't cancel as if it's cancelled you don't know how long you might be waiting and these things are important. If I were you I would go with face mask, hand sanitiser, etc. they will have everything in place to make sure it's safe

Onegingerhead · 19/12/2021 09:43

Not routine but been to AnE last Monday and spent 4 hours there.
No omicron yet.
I would have a mammogram if I were you, but it’s me. Reason being is that you don’t know when you can get one if rearrange it now
But do what you comfortable with

Crunchymum · 19/12/2021 09:50

I am due to see my rheumatologist on Wednesday (first face to face appointment in over 2 years)

I'm surprised it hasn't been moved to telephone consultation to be honest.

I don't fancy a hospital visit so close to Christmas but I won't cancel.

Crunchymum · 19/12/2021 09:51

I'm in London though. And it's absolutely rampant here.

CremeEggThief · 19/12/2021 09:53

I think you should definitely go to your mammogram.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/12/2021 09:53

I’d go ahead with health appointments, they are so important. You never know in the current climate when you could get seen again. Anything social from now, I’ve cancelled until after Christmas, hoping we won’t be in lockdown and can do it then.

RJnomore1 · 19/12/2021 09:54

I cancelled my eye test on Friday but that’s a bit different to a mammogram.

The lack of clarity is really worrying isn’t it.

JustJustWhy · 19/12/2021 09:54

Erm...yes. With my family history there's no way I was missing my mammogram. Dodgy genes won't stop for COVID.

NotSonicTheHedgehog · 19/12/2021 09:57

Oh please don’t cancel your mammogram. I’ve known three different people visit hospital recently for various things and all have said it’s v quiet.

Wakemeuuuup · 19/12/2021 10:01

I had my smear test and physio this week. It's very important to keep these appointments. Covid doesn't stop cancer.

I'm also in London

Please go, double mask if it makes you feel better and bring lots of sanitiser and wipes

Icecreaminwinter · 19/12/2021 10:04

I did go to my smear test two weeks ago in my gp surgery and it was very quiet so fine. The mammogram is in a clinic and the last time I went it was packed with people waiting and going in and out of different room. Maybe they have restrictions now, I’m not sure.

Yes. I have fortnightly neuro rehab physio at hospital that are continuing. Monthly appointments with orthotics at a different hospital. Regular appointments with my neurologist at hospital. Regular blood tests to monitor by diabetes.

I have absolutely no complaints. In fact I fell ill during first lockdown and I had an E consultation with my GP and antibiotics through my letterbox within 2 hours of calling the surgery.

Geamhradh · 19/12/2021 10:24

Yes, but I'm not UK
In your case, I'd go. You don't know when you'd be rescheduled and presumably both you and the sonographer will be wearing masks etc.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/12/2021 10:27

Don't cancel. So many people are being left without the care they keep because the hospitals or GPS refuse to see them.

I was In a&e a couple of weeks ago it was fine. Got seen within average time.

My drs however have texted to basically tell us to not bother them unless u r dying .because they are investing all their time into the booster campaign.

Erm patients have no idea how serious something is that's wht they see a dr Hmm

scochran · 19/12/2021 10:28

I wouldn't miss an appointment like this. I've got one coming up and am determined to stay covid free by reducing contacts so that I can attend. I've had covid twice and needed 3 biopsies last year and I'd rather risk covid again than miss a early warning of something serious and live through that again. If they are asking people to attend it's because it's safe and important, I think.

CactusFlowers · 19/12/2021 10:43

I would keep an important medical appointment like that.

Skap · 19/12/2021 10:46

I'd go.
I went for breast cancer treatment during the first wave last year. I know it wasn't omicron but I was unvaxxed and CEV. They will be highly concious of infection control.

mistermagpie · 19/12/2021 10:51

I have had a smear and got physio next week as long as it doesn't get cancelled I'll be there.

Please don't miss these important appointments, there are many many other things that can kill you or harm you other than Covid.

VikingOnTheFridge · 19/12/2021 10:51

If I were due a mammogram I'd have it.

Schmoozer · 19/12/2021 10:54

I went for mammogram in one of those mobile units -
It was managed very well -
Waiting outside until it’s your turn
Masks on
Hand sanitizer and wipes everywhere
Separate entrance out so no contact with anyone other than the health professional who was masked up

kimlo · 19/12/2021 10:55

I've got a blood test in the new year that I'll be going to. It really needs doing.

Then I've got a pre-op not long after which I'll go to if it's not canceled.

Next week I've got an appointment with my consultant. Thats on the phone so I'm hoping it's not canceled.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/12/2021 10:57

Please go for your mammogram Smile

Deux · 19/12/2021 11:01

I’d definitely go to a mammogram. Maybe get yourself a better mask than just a surgical one.

Undertheoldlindentree · 19/12/2021 11:03

I had my mammogram 4 days ago. The clinic was quiet and clearly set up to minimise risk. Hand sanitiser and masks at entrance, waiting room chairs very spaced out. About 4 people waiting - I was the fifth. When I arrived at reception they did warn me the time in the waiting room was longer than usual as only had one machine in use. I was offered the chance to rebook but opted to wait. All in all, from booking into reception to leaving with mammogram done was 55 mins, so not too bad.

Of course the radiographer is very close to you when positioning you against machine but she had mask, apron and gloves, I had mask and we both seemed to keep faces apart as much as poss. I didn't think about the Covid Risk at all during the process and walked out happy that I'd had it done.

I'm sure you'll feel the same OP!

LemonViolet · 19/12/2021 11:10

Please go.

You can minimise your risk of catching covid with mask (and face shield as well if you are very worried), distancing, hand hygiene. Even if you did catch it, chances are it’d be very mild, and whilst yes it may change Christmas plans, personally I’d accept that to reduce my risk of breast cancer being missed.
