Were people who are very vunerable (weakened immune systems etc) isolating before covid?

As there are lots of other virus' / bugs you can catch? I get it more when it was very new but we know a lot more about it now, and people seem to be disproportionately worried about COVID over any of the other nasty things out there you could catch in a shop or on the bus... when COVID disappears will they still be avoiding these places?

Just a bit confused as to why we might need another lockdown when the Omnicrom symptoms are basically a cold for most people who catch it (and are fully vaccinated), apparently most people (around 9 out of 10 I think) in hospital at the mo with covid are unvaccinated, are we going to have to be in lockdowns for evermore just because people are refusing to get jabbed? Hmm

No now they are mainly to protect the unvaccinated, and the effect those people being seriously ill with covid will have on everyone else with NHS meltdown etc

No because even if they didn't have to isolate people who are vaccinated often will still feel ill enough with it that they'd have to be off work.

I know no one wants to accept this, but when people talk about living with the virus, they are talking about living like this for the forseeable future.

JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 09:22

@Mickarooni and the reason the health care system needs protecting currently is because lots of people haven't been vaccinated. Yes you can still feel unwell with it even if fully vaccinated, but you are unlikely to need to go to hospital, and most people would be ok to still work / only take a day or so off if they didn't have to isolate.

There is absolutely no data whatsoever to support this.

JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 09:53

@Gingerbreadhoose really?

www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/news/coronavirus-and-your-health/covid-booster-vaccine#afterbooster

'Yes - while it is much less likely, it is still possible to catch Covid-19 after having a booster dose.

Getting the booster will reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell if you do catch the virus, as well as offering you longer-lasting protection.'

"Seriously unwell" means you're in hospital. Anything lower than that, even if you have to stay in bed feeling like shit for a week, is counted as mild.

He is triply vaccinated, on the advice of his consultant, but - not everyone's immune system is strong enough to work effectively with the vaccine. That doesn't mean it's not worth having, as there is no way of knowing how effective it will be for some vulnerable individuals. What it does mean is that he has to be cautious, because other people just won't be, or will think 'I'm sure it'll be fine' when it just might not be.

This story is extremely poignant and illustrates why for some the vaccine on its own is not enough. I don't say this because I think the vaccine isn't effective - I am hugely for it - but it just shows that you can't just tell someone that they're vaccinated so they should 'go back to normal'.

I can't believe people actually think this. Still OK to work with vulnerable people in the community? Confused

Myotherusernameisshy · 19/12/2021 11:25

Yes, I have spent years having to avoid one family member if I had so much as a cold. They stopped going to crowded places a few years ago. It's hard for us all, especially them, but better than the alternative. Covid has made most people more aware of immunosuppressed people like them and has made mask wearing more normal which has actually helped to protect them.

Yuledo · 19/12/2021 11:34

The odds are different now though. The chances of catching something dangerous is just that much higher. It’s like comparing apples and oranges because there are so many more people walking around at the moment that could be dangerous to a vulnerable person. It’s covid on top of the other dangers that still exist.

JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 11:55

@Gingerbreadhoose yes but some people having to stay in bed for a week feeling like shit isn't going to bring the NHS to a halt. Lots of people won't even have it as badly as that. The major problem at the moment is people being unvaccinated.

@PieMistee

If I hear "it's just basically a cold" line one more time I might add someone else to the a&e queue. Either you are thick or goady at this point.
I'll hold them down for you!
JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 11:58

@Dishhh so before COVID, if you had a cold, did you always stay indoors / off work / out of shops, untill it had completely gone, incase you passed it to vunerable people in the community?

OP posts:
JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 12:01

Now we have the vaccine it is basically just a cold. Before that it wasn't. The vast majority of people in hospital with it haven't had all three jabs.

OP posts:
Gingerbreadhoose · 19/12/2021 12:02

yes but some people having to stay in bed for a week feeling like shit isn't going to bring the NHS to a halt.

Erm, yes it is if all your doctors and nurses are off work.

Plus binmen, teachers, gas and electricity workers, delivery drivers, supply chain workers, lorry drivers, supermarket staff...

Potatodrivers · 19/12/2021 12:04

This is just a thread to bash those who are unvaccinated. You can still get seriously ill and wind up in hospital even if you are boosted to the hilt.

Gingerbreadhoose · 19/12/2021 12:08

I think people who choose not to be vaxxed are tits tbh, but equally people are kidding themselves if they think vaccinations alone will get us out of this.

Sadly yes, but remember that MNHQ tells us off if we're 'unwelcoming"
natrew · 19/12/2021 12:16

My MIL has always been careful over the winter months as she is CEV. Doesn't cut off all contact, she still sees family. For example she loves an afternoon tea dance but doesn't go in the winter, goes shopping when she knows it will be quiet.
She's had all her vaccines and has been careful throughout covid.
She has had one hospital stay since covid, thankfully last summer when the hospitals weren't experiencing a covid surge. I'm just hoping if she has to go in again the hospitals have the capacity to give her the care she needs. Most of the time she is a fit, active person and should have many good years ahead of her.

Yeah it does get tiring doesn't it. It isn't the "gotcha" people think it is because us immunosupressed people were cautious before covid. Its just that nobody noticed.

It also totally misses the point that covid is much more of a risk to us than flu (for example) ever was because it is so much more prevalent.

JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 19/12/2021 12:18

@Gingerbreadhoose it's unlikely they would all be off work, at the same time. Some won't get symptoms and some will have it very mildly. Yes some will be in bed for week but I imagine not all at the same time. The reason why they would all be off work is because the need to isolate, whether they are feeling ill or not!

Nearly 2 years down and people still think lockdowns are to protect “the vulnerable”?!

Yep the vulnerable protected themselves by shielding.

Sowhatifiam · 19/12/2021 13:08

On top of that is the knowledge that if our child was to die the general population would dismiss this death as unimportant and say was it with or of, they had underlining conditions. No one healthy has died etc etc. As if this child doesnt deserve the long life they would otherwise have

Yep. The shit about ‘underlying condition’ really gets to me too. My type 1 son had rising ketones yesterday - should have seen me flapping and pouring water down him! Got there in the end with it but goodness, the fear he will need hospital support and won’t be able to get it is very real.

Now we have the vaccine it is basically just a cold. Before that it wasn't

Have you actually had covid? I’m guessing not. I am one of those people with the immune system of an ox. I can’t remember ever having more than the odd day off and I’ve hit 50. I had mild covid - I say mild because my breathing was never compromised and I was able to sit in a chair and watch tv….but it was 3 weeks before I could contemplate working or doing anything other than sit and watch tv. And I spent a huge proportion of that time asleep. It wasn’t bad but there was no way it was ‘just like a cold’.

I don't think it is tbh. It's a thread to say the vulnerable should stay out of society so that the non vulnerable can get on with their Christmas parties. Equally as repugnant an idea tbf.

The vast majority of people weren’t offered their 3rd jab/booster until quite recently!
