I know, I know, I’m being ridiculous.

Xmas party tonight in a really nice restaurant. Just had a text saying they have decided to cancel.

I’m gutted lol. Haven’t been out in a long long time. A few of us were planning on going for drinks afterwards and I was so excited lol.

I also feel bloody awful for the restaurant to lose a big booking the day of when we have had to pre order our food.

🥺

I can understand why, I don't want to be isolating for Christmas.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/12/2021 11:26

If no one wants to go out, could you organise a zoom party? I know that it is not the same thing but you could all chat/play games/have a quiz etc. You could even have a couple of glasses of wine, all have your own nibbles and so on. Better than nothing.

Ticksallboxes · 17/12/2021 11:31

We were really looking forward to going to the theatre in London next week. All the pre-Christmas performances have now been cancelled though as many of the cast and crew have covid, but we've managed to rebook for New Years Eve.

I was very disappointed at first but think this is a better option now as it really lowers my family's risk of catching covid before Christmas.

@MotherOfDragons27

Don't feel too bad for the restaurant, they will have taken a deposit so they won't lose out on e ingredients. You could still go out for drinks with your colleagues if you want to?
As the owner of a restaurant this would be a huge blow. Things are tight enough as it is! A deposit might cover ingredients but with all the profit/drinks sales out of the window its not to be brushed off!!
Wilkolampshade · 17/12/2021 11:37

@MotherOfDragons27 er no, that's not how hospitality works. The restaurant will be expecting to make by far its biggest chunk of profit on drinks which they will have bought in but which now 100% won't be sold. They may or may not cover the cost of ingredients with a deposit, they certainly WILL have spent time prepping which equals £££ for staff costs and they WILL have spent out £££ on staffing for this evening. If the staff are on zero hours it may or may not be possible to tell them to come in depending on contractual details but if its the staff that takes the hit that's still a hit just further down the line.

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Why? I honestly do not understand why this is happening?

I went to the cinema last night, going to the theatre on Saturday and our for lunch on Monday. Then three days at the Foodbank.

Can you and your friends still meet for drinks?

I’m sure you’ll find somewhere to eat.

What’s not to understand? Some people will be spend Christmas with just their household, others will be spending it with wider family, including some who might be vulnerable. Particularly after the restrictions last year.

We’re now less than 10 days away from Christmas, so going out and catching covid this weekend means you will be having to isolate at home on Christmas Day. If you don’t want that then cancelling is a sensible option.

It’s really shit for hospitality venues, but the government should have seen thus coming a mile off. With the covid rates as high as they have been for months, people were always going to start prioritising if they thought that covid would ruin their plans. They literally have behavioural advisors to tell them this. They chose to ignore the situation and neither lower cases in the run up to Christmas nor support sectors that will be damaged.

Siameasy · 17/12/2021 13:14

If you can find some who will go out, you can still go.

MrsWarleggan · 17/12/2021 13:23

Lockdown by stealth.

We can't officially lock you down because we can't afford to furlough, so now we are just going to scare the population SHITLESS, so they can make our decisions for us and then we don't look like the bad guys.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/12/2021 13:26

Exactly

luckylavender · 17/12/2021 13:27

@JayAlfredPrufrock - do you live under a stone? Because your post is tone deaf.

Notonthestairs · 17/12/2021 13:33

Can you suggest rebooking for end of January? Something to brighten up the gloom? Hopefully people will have had boosters by then.

Elfonthesofa · 17/12/2021 13:35

@Teacaketotty

Our works Xmas night was last weekend, I was one of the few who didn’t go - and now nearly alone in the office as they all have covid and are isolating at home until the 25/26th. They’ve all said it wasn’t worth it.
Yeh, I bet they thought getting ten days out of the office in the run up to Christmas wasn't worth it at all. Hmm

@Elfonthesofa - Hmm

Teacaketotty · 17/12/2021 15:12

@Elfonthesofa unfortunately for them they have to still work from home, and not see their families at Christmas so not exactly a win.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/12/2021 17:17

Yes I live under a nice grey rock thanks.
