To think the Gov’t are ‘letting it rip’

The rules that double jabbed household members of a positive case don’t need to isolate when more and more people are being reinfected even with boosters.

The rule that children don’t need to SI if their parents have it: spreading to teachers, early years workers and their families as well as their peers.

If they truly wanted to halt the spread, they would not have those ridiculous rules.

I’m just not sure that there is an alternative no matter what the government does with a variant spreading this fast that is already so embedded.

Buzzinwithbez · 17/12/2021 10:29

How can they be - the statistical model predicting the possibility of 1 million cases per day has now been withdrawn sure to 'behavioural change' we do not need mandates to change behaviour, people will do this of their own accord.

Whether they're doing this in response to 'nudges' or not is a different matter.

To think the Gov’t are ‘letting it rip’
Blubells · 17/12/2021 10:31

It seems remarkably stupid to allow a virus of which we know little, to become so endemic.

But there's no way to stop such a transmissible virus as omicron!

We have to learn to live with it.

NYResolutions2022 · 17/12/2021 10:36

I don't think there is any other viable option but to let it rip. It is uncontrollable and the upside is that it is mild and it will peak quickly.

I think it is a case of "BRACE BRACE" and the only way is through it, down the middle, and come out the other side ready for a better Spring 2022.

ichundich · 17/12/2021 10:43

@Unanananana

'Let it rip' sounds so 'scaremongery' so it needs to stop being used. So done with lockdown lovers. You sound like you want schools closed and everyone locked in their homes again.

The adults you mention that our apparently germ ridden kids are infecting should be vaccinated. If they aren't through choice (obviously excluding those who can't be vaccinated before anyone gets funny) then more fool them.

My family have had our vaccinations, including my 13 year old who is being booked in for her booster when I can. I'm not making any more sacrifices.

Exactly. In our school (small primary) the biggest outbreak started with a teacher, who infected several other staff members and quite a few pupils. We've had isolated cases in children since but they don't seem to spread as much. Kids aren't the super spreaders that some people are claiming.

@ichundich

Are you basing your reasoning solely on your school? Have you seen the disruption being caused at other schools?

OP posts:
minipie · 17/12/2021 10:46

The disruption is being caused by the isolation rules, not by covid.

If we treated covid like a cold or flu (which with vaccinations it is for the vast majority) there would be far less disruption, people would be off if they feel ill and no more.

ichundich · 17/12/2021 10:48

So the alternative would be what exactly? Lockdown!

Tillsforthrills · 17/12/2021 10:50

@ichundich

Oh dear, I’ll have to repeat that this is about SI rules not a lockdown.

Virus gonna virus
😄

I don't like this letting rip terminology either - it just feels emotive and non-scientific. There aren't easy answers for any of this at the moment.

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 10:51

Many schools break up today and a few early next week , after that I feel people might lie low for a while or just not bother testing if it's so mild they feel they can just cope at home.
The ten days is tough and I bet many won't do the entire time.
This is pretty much ' lockdown very lite' and they will see how the hospitals are coping too.
The next week or so is critical , but it might be alright ? Who knows ?

Tillsforthrills · 17/12/2021 10:53

I think we all know by now which terminology we prefer but we are adult enough to know whatever term we use amounts to the same thing.

Herd immunity.

let it rip OMG that's up there with 2nd wave / 3rd wave and the best one - circuit breaker !!!
Facebook favourites LOL

@Dontforgetyourbrolly

“Circuit breaker” is still doing rounds in the press 😁

No, they're not 'letting it rip' and that kind of comment is scare-mongering nonsense. Insisting that every member of a family isolate for 10 days when one tests positive is not sustainable for the country or its economy. In many families, that one person (if an adult or a DC over about 12) can isolate in their room and quite possibly not infect the rest of the family. I know many families where one case of Covid has not spread to anyone else in the home and actually cooping everyone else up with the Covid case is much more likely to spread it than allow them to 'escape' the house. Also, case numbers are not that relevant any more now most people are vaccinated. I know masses of people who've had Covid and absolutely no one who has had anything other than a mild, fluey/cold-like illness.

We have to learn to live with it.

But what does "learning to live with it mean"?

We do not nor do we have any plans whatsoever, to build up a healthservice that can cope with a 2 or 3 thousand daily infections.

We could, we have had 2 years to increase numbers in training, plan to build more facilities but Johnson has been too busy partying and his former health sec off shagging.

So today, it has been announced that approx 100k additional operations will be cancelled.

Tillsforthrills · 17/12/2021 10:59

The 10 days off isolation for close contacts will just turn into 10 days isolation of the contacts positive case, along with everyone else they infected….

So the argument against SI for close contacts is kind of nonsense because for every one case that doesn’t catch it because of not SI, many others will.

If Omicron only causes mild symptoms then not many of these would need any healthcare.

Blubells · 17/12/2021 11:04

Yes, especially if omicron causes only mild symptoms.

Perhaps but what happens when another variant comes along that isn't so mild?

The only way to live with CV is to have robust healthcare, that can cope with large numbers of patients but also deal with the all the other health issues was have.
6m waiting for elective surgery (set to rise to 13m according to Javid) is extremely damaging to the economy, these are people, many of whom could be working but instead are claiming benefits and in pain.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 17/12/2021 11:11

I was quite surprised to see the news contrasting of South Korea and UK yesterday.

South Korean prime minister officially apologising for failed covid policy when the daily case approaching 8k cases, while UK has 80k+ and life is quite normal compared to most of other countries.
