Why are we not in lockdown right now?!

If things are as bad as they say, why are we not locking down right now?

Surely waiting til after Christmas is just too late to stop this "tidal wave"

Because there are preventative measures. Thousands of people aren't dying every day. Nobody will adhere to a lockdown now.

AD80 · 16/12/2021 12:20

Even if we were in a lockdown, no one would comply anyway! The British public don't like being told what to do - even the ones who have set the rules! 👀

Myusername2015 · 16/12/2021 12:20

Firstly they don’t want to offer financial support to industries and individuals so this effectively is a “lock yourself down” scenario secondly Johnson couldn’t even get plan B through his own party vote so could never get a lockdown in.

DayKay · 16/12/2021 12:21

Why should we be?

angelopal · 16/12/2021 12:21

They would have to do furlough again and they can't afford it.

WheelieBinPrincess · 16/12/2021 12:22

Because not everyone is losing their heads at all this bloody hype, thankfully.

Although plenty are, and some are revelling in it.

OhLookMoreShit · 16/12/2021 12:22

Get a grip!

Pamsresearch · 16/12/2021 12:23

How do you propose persuading people who have had 3 vaccinations (and in many cases already had Covid) that they need to shut themselves away again?

How much authority do you think government have to make it happen, given what we know about their behaviour?

How do you propose to pay for it?

Bettyboop3 · 16/12/2021 12:23

Really? Hmm

CrispsnDips · 16/12/2021 12:24

People are locking themselves down, naturally, and cancelling social events …

Akire · 16/12/2021 12:24

It seems to be those who willing take risk to carry on as normal. In your 50s probable not wise go down a packed pub but up to you. They don’t want give money to pubs to close but this way many are really struggling.

It makes sense in some ways if your 25 living away home your Xmas is meeting friends week before and having a party. For others they save that social mixing for Xmas day to see family. Mix at own risk seems to be the message this way they aim keep both sides happy and costs them nowt

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2021 12:25

We are not waiting until after Christmas, its peaking before that

But also all you do is slightly dampen a very transmissible variant

How long would you do it for?

SLH2003 · 16/12/2021 12:25

But if we go into lockdown again and close the shops, pubs , restaurants , workplaces etc.... What will you do ,where will you go? Just amble about the street shouting fuck off lockdown?
BirdyBirdyTweetTweet · 16/12/2021 12:26

Do we need to ?

This ^

In a short time a huge portion of the hospitality industry, in particular, will be closed due to staff shortages, and the government won’t need to give anyone a penny as it’s not an official lockdown.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 12:26

haha is this a joke?

lockdown?? theres no furlough....who will pay for it?

AdamRyan · 16/12/2021 12:26

I think we should be in lock down so affected industries get support
This "consider 9f you need to socialise" is bollocks and loads of businesses will go under
And bollocks to "we can't afford it". We could afford it if there was a war. That's pure Conservative ideology.

Basically money, plus compliance. They'd have to pay furlough again but it would have less impact then previous lockdowns because a lot of -idiots- people would still be going to see granny for Christmas.

The clinical part of me thinks someone will have done cost vs lives saved calculations, and come to the conclusion it's not worth it.

InkyPinkyParlezVous · 16/12/2021 12:28

Just to be clear, I don't want to lockdown. But, if we are that concerned about the NHS and the country being overwhelmed then surely the time to act is now. I suspect were the finances in place we would be in lockdown today.

OP posts:
Shallwegoforawalk · 16/12/2021 12:28

Because we can't afford it. There won't be any furlough again for the foreseeable.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2021 12:29

Op how long and what happens when you release?

I think omicron changes the response

Sprogonthetyne · 16/12/2021 12:29

That should say cynical, but clinical kind of fits

SagittariusDwarf · 16/12/2021 12:29

@SLH2003 quite possibly I would do that! I'd also meet up with friends indoors. A lot.

So far one person in the UK has reportedly died from omnicron. They're not going to lock us down.

There are 90% less hospital admissions than there were at the peak and the NHS was never overwhelmed.
