Are you still sending your kids to school?

My primary school kids have got two more days of school. It's a lovely, fun time of year, but realistically they're not going to be learning much between now and Friday afternoon. Staff and pupils are starting to drop like flies. I'm in two minds whether to send them in or keep them home and try and save Christmas! Obviously if they already have covid then we're screwed, but we would still get a bit of a new year...anyone else feeling similar?

I also meant to say that DS16's school has given us the option of sending them in or keeping them off if they not in a class with positive cases and have said that they will fully support our decision either way.

No need for lies.

I'm so gutted he is missing the last few days as he is an only child with severe SLD so really needs every ounce of socialisation he can get.

He has a serious ED and we were so looking forward to him having his school Christmas Dinner with his new pals. We've been preparing him for that for weeks.

I have year 10, 11 and 13 tomorrow. We're working until the bitter end. They can do "fun" in their own time.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 15/12/2021 21:04

Yes, my year 3 class will tomorrow be doing spelling, reading, maths and RE. Might colour for a bit in the afternoon.

MrsHamlet · 15/12/2021 21:08

We'll be at home in the afternoon :)

Well yes because...work 🤷‍♀️
Yup, same here!

@Tabbacus

Poor children, already had so much of their education disrupted and people want to willingly keep them off!
Mine were delighted to get 2 extra days holiday.

Some kids love school. Mine do.

2toastornot2toast · 15/12/2021 21:43

Pulled mine out yesterday both their classes have lots of cases and we want to see family at xmas. Might be too late but hopefully not. Lots of friends Christmas ruined due to positive children

@Waxonwaxoff0

Nope. DS is in school until the 23rd and will be going in.

I hope those who don't want to send their kids in aren't the ones moaning if they close schools in January.

You know it will be! And the ones who cannot possibly get their children to do anything at home as well.

Some kids love being at home with their parents. Mine do.
LittleBabyCheeses · 15/12/2021 21:52

Oh yeah mine too. Wouldn’t get much quality time with me though if I kept them out of school, as I have a job.

I work in a school.

Lots of parents are making the decision not to send kids in. Mostly in classes with cases - I guess in the hope it's not too late?

I respect that. It has to be personal choice based on your own circumstances and plans.

herecomesthsun · 15/12/2021 21:57

If DC felt he would prefer to stay at home given the risks, we would be happy for him to stay at home.

He wants very passionately to be at school because so many fun things are going on. It is full on creative stuff.

So in he is going.

His sister is at home with covid.

We have followed the advice to the last letter, he is testing every morning before he goes in, we are all as vaccinated as we can possibly be.

It feels important for him to have this time with his mates.

It also feels less risky than last year as we are vaccinated. so our risk as a family (and there is risk) is lower.

ZoBo123 · 15/12/2021 21:58

I am guessing that those who can just pull your children out of school won't be needing the key worker provision if the schools shut again.

PickAChew · 15/12/2021 21:59

I would - he's autistic and loves the routine of school - but he's ill with a cough. No idea if it's covid but he won't let me me near him with a test swab.

FreakinFrankNFurter · 15/12/2021 22:00

Yes. DS doesn't break up until 23rd and they have all their fun stuff next week - panto, christmas lunch, christingle they've been practicing, Christmas party

I can't take him away from all that to keep him home. I want him to be filled with school, fun, friends and normality for as long as possible before schools potentially close again

WorldAtlasOfTea · 15/12/2021 22:04

My 4yo has been off for the last few days with high temp / general grottiness. PCR came back negative today. We've decided he'll be (genuinely) too ill tomorrow (based on today), esp as he's not yet compulsory school age. I can't imagine we'll send him in on Friday, even if he's recovered enough.

DD is a few years older and she'll be in as long as they're open. She's less likely to have close contact with as many other kids.

PoshPyjamas · 15/12/2021 22:05

I'm shocked people would consider taking their kids out - like school is optional or something!

Yep!
cheninblanc · 15/12/2021 22:07

Yes. Xmas day can celebrated in January or beyond. Their maths class in year 11 won't be repeated.

TolkiensFallow · 15/12/2021 22:08

Yes sending her in. I believe we will all get covid at some point and whilst I don’t want it - I just don’t see it being any different in January and she can’t be off indefinitely.

Springhere · 15/12/2021 22:10

We're in the north (rural area) and omicron hasn't hit yet so my two dc will stay in school. I might very well have made a different decision if we were somewhere with rapidly increasing cases.

Lacedwithgrace · 15/12/2021 22:12

DD went in this Monday and is off now until January. Her teachers were supportive and sent her home with plenty of work and activities to do. DH and I both work FT, we just make it work.
