Are you still sending your kids to school?

My primary school kids have got two more days of school. It's a lovely, fun time of year, but realistically they're not going to be learning much between now and Friday afternoon. Staff and pupils are starting to drop like flies. I'm in two minds whether to send them in or keep them home and try and save Christmas! Obviously if they already have covid then we're screwed, but we would still get a bit of a new year...anyone else feeling similar?

@Hellocatshome

Yes because a) I have to work b) I anticipate disruption in the new year and want them to have a normal school experience as much as possible and c) in our house school isnt optional you go unless you physically can't (obviously within confines of isolating and 48hr rule for d&v etc)
And also this.

I'm right on the fence tonight with what to do tomorrow. I'm a childminder so wfh but with pockets of cases in DDs school and needing to protect the families I provide a service to I'm very torn. We have no plans for over Christmas as I will be working in between Christmas and New year. However it's highly unlikely that I'll be sending her back in January.

Notwithittoday · 15/12/2021 20:03

Yes ours are going in. They need as much normality as we can get for them

theSunday · 15/12/2021 20:03

No way, it’s school till Friday here.

stitchmaker85 · 15/12/2021 20:04

Yes of course, because I have to go to work

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 15/12/2021 20:04

Yes, she has a class Christmas party tomorrow afternoon that she's so excited about and Friday they'll be watching Xmas movies, doing crafts, singing carols and taking in teacher gifts. If I kept her home she'd be sat by herself watching telly and playing alone while me and DH work at our computers all day.

lololololollll · 15/12/2021 20:04

Mine have been told not to come as cases too high and no teachers to teach 😬

ladygindiva · 15/12/2021 20:05

I'm keeping mine off tomorrow, I'm fortunate that I don't need to work ( self employed, can finish odds and sods when dp finishes at 5pm). Brother visiting for Christmas, I haven't seen him and his family since a flying visit in summer and 18 months before that and don't want it jeopardised.

LuckyAmy1986 · 15/12/2021 20:05

Should have been online learning this week in my opinion yeah sod everyone that has to go to work

Backyard72 · 15/12/2021 20:05

Took my son out yesterday. I am teaching him stuff at home, missing 4 days is not a major issue IMO.

We'll all definitely feel more comfortable going to my mum's at Christmas.

MiniatureHotdog · 15/12/2021 20:05

Of course not, it wouldn't even occur to me to consider it.

ElfDragon · 15/12/2021 20:07

Yes.

I had one dc finish last week (actual end of term), and another today. Eldest dc finishes on Friday, and will be going in until then (unless obviously school closes - there has been quite a few staff off).

Youngest dc has a party on Friday, and then we’re off to the panto too.

Just trying to keep as much normal life going as possible, as am anticipating that there may be stricter rules come Jan/Feb

kowari · 15/12/2021 20:07

DS is in year 11 so won't be missing a day of school unless he is ill in bed. We've had Covid anyway.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 15/12/2021 20:10

I really, REALLY wish I were, however we got a message before school yesterday morning saying that they now had 2 positive cases in his class and telling us to keep him home and get him a PCR before he can return.

He attends an amazing SEN school so LFT tests are not being accepted due to the vulnerability of many of the students.

Therefore if a pupil is unable to tolerate a PCR they have to isolate for 10 days.

We did manage to get him a postal PCR which they will accept and just awaiting the results now, but I have very little hope they will return in time for him to return for the last couple of days.

He just started in his 6th form in Sept and was making real progress after the first horrendous lockdown which for 7 months DH & took care of him 24/7 with no outside help whatsoever.

I ended up in a very dark place and I am pretty sure I couldn't do that again

Pootle40 · 15/12/2021 20:10

Of course. It's a fun time for them to be with peers. It's that or sit on an iPad in pjs all day while we work. Not good for anyone

RaraRachael · 15/12/2021 20:11

We don't break up till the 23rs. Being so close to Christmas, I can't see us having many pupils in next week. I can't see parents risking their Christmas plans for the sake of a few days when they won't be doing a lot.

landofgiants · 15/12/2021 20:12

I would do, but the council have decided to close all schools 3 days early. Annoyed. We've just had Covid and he's been off for ages this term, but I can totally relate to why you might want to keep them home.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/12/2021 20:13

DD will be in school till they break up on Friday - they have lots of fun stuff planned & they've missed so much of that already.
I'm even putting DS in tomorrow at preschool, when he doesn't usually go on Thursday, as they're having a Christmas Party. He needs the socialisation after so long in lockdown.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 15/12/2021 20:14

No. I've pulled my 3 out yesterday. We asked for a leave of absence so we could isolate for 10 days so that my terminally Ill FIL can spend his last Christmas with us. We lost my mum and sister during the first wave and my MIL last new years eve, there's no way he's spending Christmas at home, alone. Thankfully both schools authorised the rest of this week.

Purpletomato · 15/12/2021 20:17

Yes. I'm not stopping them doing any activity at the moment. I'm worried Johnson will close schools again and I want them to have normal things while they can.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 20:17

Which council? Seems like a few are doing this, got my fingers crossed that ours doesn't!
INeedNewShoes · 15/12/2021 20:17

Those of you not sending your DC in for the last couple of days, what are you telling the school?

IrisPurple · 15/12/2021 20:18

Only child in Reception - Yes. She needs fun time with friends not stuck indoors with just TV for company while I work.

natrew · 15/12/2021 20:18

I will, but his class only had 17 (out of 30) in today, some have Covid, others are trying to avoid it.

WashWam · 15/12/2021 20:19

@INeedNewShoes

Those of you not sending your DC in for the last couple of days, what are you telling the school?

I would just tell the truth - school will understand. Parents at ours are testing positive daily at the moment and class sizes reducing with each one.
