Walk in or wait for appointment?

Hi,

Mid 30's, double vaccinated and got a text from my GP saying they'd be in contact to arrange my booster, but who knows when that will be?! Tried booking on the phone when NHS booking crashed, but I couldn't get an appointment for several weeks, so they recommended I went to a walk in centre.

Only one with boosters is 30 minutes away, which is ok, but tbh I don't really fancy waiting around for hours in a big crowd of people. Trying to reduce contact as much as possible before Christmas.

Are all walk ins basically rammed right now?

Try a walk in. You will probably be waiting outside so take camp chair warm clothes umbrella and book

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/12/2021 20:39

Me and DH went to a walk in late afternoon. Queued for 2 hours but very well organised.

valnevavaxx · 13/12/2021 20:39

Completely depends on where you are, and what time of day you go etc. For example I'm in London so there are many walk in centres, but even they vary in how busy they are depending on when you go.

Try the website again, it’s back up now.

Thanks everyone.

Does anyone know which booster is most effective after the AZ? I heard it was Moderna, but the closest walk in is only offering Pfizer.

I read Modena increases your protection 30 fold and Pfizer 25 fold.

25 fold is really good. Get whichever booster you can as fast as you can. Good luck.

It's chaos since Boris' announcement. I queued for 1.5 hrs with an appointment (S London) so you might as well go to a walk in.

ImStayingInside · 14/12/2021 08:56

I’m in the North West and was in and out of a walk in clinic this morning. Got there at 8, was jabbed by 8:10 and on my way by 8:30.
Queueing was outside but it was in, jab, done and onto the next person, they had lots of seats and lots of staff administering jabs.

Do you need any ID at all? Presumably you don't need that flimsy piece of card? Confused

@OrangeCrunch I thought it was 2xAZ +Pfizer = 75% protection against serious symptoms if/when you get omricon .

But you could ask over on the data thread

I'm wondering the same, nightmare to get through to book an appointment and reports of really long wait times on the local walk in places.

middleager · 14/12/2021 09:20

Why don't you wait a few days and see if it calms down.

Sideswiped · 14/12/2021 09:20

If you're prepared to try it, book on the website - I was on it yesterday in the morning. The page auto-refreshes and occasionally said the site was having technical difficulties. I refreshed the page myself and I was still in the queue. It happened several times, but I still managed to book an appointment.

lurker101 · 14/12/2021 09:21

Bf went to a walk in last night (London) - queued around 30 mins. Asked for NHS number which we had (it’s on the home screen of the app you use to download vaccination proof for travel), but they were able to vaccinate even if you didn’t have this. I would go to a walk in if you can.

thewhatsit · 14/12/2021 09:23

DH booked online yesterday for this week. I booked on Sunday but took something more than a week away because I’m being fussier on when and where exactly I go.

The website is working, it’s just busy and if you don’t get in or it’s down.. try again 10 mins later.

CorrBlimeyGG · 14/12/2021 09:31

Does your CCG have a Facebook page? Here they're booking for January, and queues are two hours long in the city centre, but if you keep an eye on the FB page it tells you if there are any quiet periods. At one centre people were able to walk in with no wait at all.

I was asked for my nhs number. Showed them the app with my previous jabs on it but some numpty had typed over my first with my second so the flimsy bit of card did come in handy then.

No ID needed. (I'm in Scotland). Name and address was enough for them to find my NHS records.
ArabellaScott · 14/12/2021 09:48

Sorry, I didn't mean to quote your post, valnevavaxx!

Fridafever · 14/12/2021 10:56

I’m in a walk in queue now in SW London, been here nearly 2 hours but nearly at the front now I think.

rainbowandglitter · 14/12/2021 10:58

I have an appointment at a walk in centre. What happens then? Will I still need to queue or do I jump the queue when it's my appointment time?

avocadotofu · 14/12/2021 10:58

My husband and I went to a walk in yesterday morning. We waiting for two hours but both managed to get vaccinated. It was really well organised.
