If we are faced with remote learning, will school be open for vulnerable children?

@MarshaBradyo

Do people know if it’s delta or omicron atm
London 40% Omicron today, expected to be majority Omicron by Weds.
MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 20:49

Are people with closed schools in London?

I am in London. We are starting to get cases but only the start and no classes off, hardly any dc off

But we just had a delta wave

Bebedoogoogle · 13/12/2021 20:51

We are definitely gearing up to go into lockdown. All the signs are there. I can’t believe people can’t see it coming!

I was totally taken by surprise before. I the hated lockdowns (young children and work full time). It was a nightmare. But we’re so OBVIOUSLY heading towards another lockdown I can’t believe people can’t see it.

People say the government won’t do it again. But they will literally have NO CHOICE. Services would collapse and it would be absolute carnage.

JanglyBeads · 13/12/2021 21:03

I apologise @Staffy1 and @x2boys, yes the parents of and schools for SEN children were left incredibly unsupported and unthought of, weren’t they?

How could special schools be supported to stay open this time, I wonder?

x2boys · 13/12/2021 21:12

Personally I would rather they had a rota so the students get at least a day or two in school a week ,but that not might work for some people I don't blame the schools in my son's school they have a lot of clinically vulnerable children so they have to protect them but there was literally no support in the last two lockdowns for very complex needs children
HairyToity · 13/12/2021 21:13

We live near Wrexham, and schools are now closing on Friday rather than Wednesday next week. I wouldn't mind homeschooling quite so much, if I wasn't homeworking as well. Doing both I find horrendous. I'm on a real downer over this, and wish life could return to normal, and we can all take our chances with Omricon.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/12/2021 21:14

@stitchmaker85

So am I expected to just not work if schools close again as there is no furlough anymore? Not a key worker therefore wont be entitled to a place, and can't work from home.

I'll be bankrupt within a month.

Some people forget that people like us exist. It's an assumption that if you're not a key worker, you can work from home but there are a lot of us who aren't key workers but can't work from home!

Sorry you're in that position, I was able to send DS in last time as his dad is a key worker. Neither of us can work from home. It's unfair.

Blubells · 13/12/2021 21:15

We can't afford another furlough scheme! The consequences of closing schools would be enormously costly to Society!!

Blubells · 13/12/2021 21:18

And what about the huge cost to our children's education and mental well-being?!

I would be hugely surprised if the Government were to close schools!

Itsnotover · 13/12/2021 21:23

So it’s better to just let people die then? Hmm

Appuskidu · 13/12/2021 21:26

I expect the next two or three weeks will be spent with covid rates soaring and the government refusing to talk about schools at all, let alone acknowledge there may be a problem.

Then, there may well be a last-minute panicked decision on ‘what to do about schools’ next month. Probably at around 8pm on a Sunday night, if I had to hazard a guess.

I work on an SEN school for children with muliple complex needs. We did initially close to all in March 2020 but reopened in the Summer term and then remained open thereafter. The confusion as to how to protect CEV/medically vulnerable children was a big factor in the early days. When we did reopen many families chose to keep their children off, some only returned in September 21.

I guess as a society we need to decide what an acceptable level of death is? Just like we tolerate deaths from many other causes. We need to balance the costs and benefits of any decision we make.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 13/12/2021 21:39

If schools close again what join can self employed DH say he does to gain key worker status. Our school requires proof too. DS threatened to kill himself twice during last closures. I begged school to have him in but they said no. DH will
Lie if he has to.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 13/12/2021 21:39

Job not join 🤦🏼‍♀️

Crapslattern · 13/12/2021 21:43

Previous infection without vaccines won't protect the kids. Teachers under 40 can only now book boosters - which take 14 days to take effect. The vast majority of school aged pupils are unvaccinated or half vaccinated at best. This is useless against omicron, that we do know.

Schools are falling apart with Covid at the moment and omicron is only just beginning to do its stuff. Schools will be blasted in January and February - it's inevitable.

The govt may not close schools but the running of them will become impossible and the quality of education the kids get between now and Easter will be pretty patchy, at best, despite teachers' incredible efforts.

Oh - and yeah, the unions have nothing to do with the closing of schools. If they had that power, the schools would have closed way earlier last December and we wouldn't have had the disaster one day back in January this year. Education mid-pandemic, is, as ever, a political football.

Crapslattern · 13/12/2021 21:45

@LidlMiddleLover

They won’t close omicron is mild so it will just run its course

Hmmm - I don't think so

Incognito22333 · 13/12/2021 21:46

A blanket school closure really doesn’t make sense because every area and school has its own Covid wave. Bubbles/mitigations and perhaps closures of individual classes beyond a certain case number/year groups/schools makes much more sense.

It is happening with Omicron again that London is hit first, really doesn’t make sense to close schools in other areas until they are actually affected properly.
In addition, the kids can’t keep saving the elderly and unvaccinated, it would make more sense to restrict kids socially and recommend strongly eg. no mixing with grandparents. Unless kids start getting the virus severely there is no argument to close schools again. Regarding staff they should have long been given priority vaccination status.

Crapslattern · 13/12/2021 21:49

I'm in London too. Schools barely managing to function here.

That graph doesn't really give any numbers of actual hospital admissions? It doesn't tell us how many people in each age group had to be admitted to hospital. Unless I'm missing something?

Hippywannabe · 13/12/2021 21:57

The kids are the ones catching and spreading it, over half of the class off here in the last two weeks.now going into the third week and they are still going down with it as the first lit come back. We aren't allowed to isolate now so it just went like dominoes whereas had we isolated with the first case, we might have not had so many cases going on for so long.
They aren't vaccinated unlike the majority of adults.
I would be surprised if schools close to most again but if they do, keyworker and vulnerable children will be in like last time.

Blubells · 13/12/2021 22:01

The vast majority of school aged pupils are unvaccinated or half vaccinated at best. This is useless against omicron, that we do know.

We don't know this yet.

Omicron may be very mild or asymptomatic for school aged pupils, so they may not need any protection through vaccines.

Montecristocount · 13/12/2021 22:03

Surely schools can only close if pubs, shops and restaurants are also closed. I don’t think anyone will stand for the ludicrous situation we had in the summer 2020 when restaurants were open but the kids still weren’t allowed in school.
So apart from local disruption with the odd class out I don’t think schools will close again

Covidworries · 13/12/2021 22:07

I think that they are hanging on till as long as possible so shops and pubs can get the christmas trade and will close everything on 24th. Schools wont go back in january imo

Katjolo · 13/12/2021 22:09

I'm not one to spread doom and gloom but I believe a lockdown is on its way. Not neccessarily national but regional more likely.
