The box on the left are from the NHS (which we are NOT allowed to use for travel), the box on the right is the one I’ve paid for to travel! 🤷‍♀️

Why should the NHS pay your holiday expenses?

PercyThick · 12/12/2021 22:15

Say what? What's the issue?

Chatterboxy · 12/12/2021 22:16

Just to add, I haven’t got an issue with paying to travel, but I’d rather pay the money & it went to the NHS rather than private companies.

I know - it’s a joke.

I go on holiday but I’ve been triple jabbed, don’t smoke, am not obese….why should the NHS pay for argument doesn’t work

ColettesEarrings · 12/12/2021 22:17

Oh come on, we all knew it was Bojo, Hancock and their mates!

vera99 · 12/12/2021 22:18

Agreed and most of the private companies are shit as well. But the NHS testing is also outsourced to some probably Tory spiv donor.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 12/12/2021 22:38

Nothing wrong with that. Someone has to manufacture the tests. The NHS shouldn't pay for your holiday.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 12/12/2021 22:42

What's the problem? The NHS doesn't make all the medication people take

Chatterboxy · 12/12/2021 22:43

I think that people shouldn't be charged for these tests regardless of need; if the tests are deemed necessary then they are so should be free.

If we take the opposing argument we should stop the NHS paying for anything that is due to person's leisure eg accident whilst mountain biking you pay not the NHS

shinynewapple21 · 12/12/2021 22:53

@Chatterboxy is the LFT the test for pre-return-flight? Do you just do it as you would the normal LFT? How do you record it?

Just curious as I'm travelling in February (yeah I know - still hopeful!)

How does this work? The NHS don't make them - they buy them in.

So for you to pay the money to the NHS they'd have to act as a middle man, buying them from the supplier and selling them on to you at a profit.

I'm guessing it would make them more expensive. It would also need the NHS to set up a commercial arm, taking payments and tracking orders/delivery/refunds.

I just can't see how that would work in practice.

It’s a pre flight Lat Flow, you do the test at home, take a picture & email with the unique code you’re supplied with when you buy it & up to 48 hours beforehand, they then send you an email certificate to show at the airport.
You also need to do another 2 days before you fly home, & a PCR test when you get home, which you post back. This is current m, but could change.
Hope this helps.

I felt the same op. If the tests were about keeping the country safe they'd cap the price or only charge manufacturing cost - we paid £20 per test but some companies were charging far more. These private companies (who when you look the big ones are friends of the torys) are making a fortune.

I don't think anybody wants the nhs to pay for holidays. That's a ridiculous snarky comment.

The point is, the nhs tests are provided free for when medically necessary. But that same test costs an absolute fortune for someone to buy privately to enable them to go about their life and do enjoyable things.

Why can't they be provided at a reasonable price.

NotDonna · 12/12/2021 23:23

Have they also sent you ones to do whilst away? May I ask company & cost please?

hamstersarse · 12/12/2021 23:29

The whole travel system is a joke

I did a little experiment it last time I was away and never sent my day 2 off. Nothing happened.

They just wanted to see I had bought it, not actually done it. With that in mind, it would be better for airports just to provide free lateral flows on arrival…at least they would be done and tracked etc.

Don’t worry fretters, I didn’t have covid. Was just interested to see how the system was working.

Hi, I used ‘officialrapidtests.com’ they were £21 each, yes they sent two, so I can do one abroad via e-mail.

I’ve been hearing this a lot lately, and you’re correct, they only want the number for your passenger locator form!

Me too. I think the UK is pathetic. On arrival back in Qatar from the Heathrow shit show, my app turned to quarantine status until my PCR test result came through meaning I couldn't go into any public areas and could have been fined for leaving the house. It was green within 24 hours because the tests are linked to the NHS system. I am amazed I didn't get Covid at Heathrow, if I had been economy I'm sure I would have. Can't believe people want to travel for fun at the moment. There's no healthcare safety net in the UK, no standards, no precautions and the non exist ant NHS is expected to pay for easyjet package holiday shits and giggles. Fuck that.

But the private company needs to be paid to produce the tests.
Theunamedcat · 13/12/2021 00:01

Yes we buy them in from China

Draggondragon · 13/12/2021 08:44

China still needs to be paid. We aren't allowed LFTs here because they are not reliable but have walk in centres 24/7. Free if contact tracing, £20 if holiday travel. Result within 3 hours. It's like the UK actively want Covid to continue.

Whattochoosenow · 13/12/2021 08:50

Don’t forget the cost of your test also includes someone to certify that it’s negative
The question we should be asking is how much is it costing the NHS for one of these tests. Does anyone know ? Even if it’s only £5 a time think about how much it’s costing the NHS each day if everyone is testing more than twice a week.

peridito · 13/12/2021 08:53

I think that people shouldn't be charged for these tests regardless of need; if the tests are deemed necessary then they are so should be free

nothing's free though is it ?

and lots of people pay prescription charges for medicine that is deemed necessary for their health .Which if they didn't take would result in them being a burden on the NHS .
