UK Omicron cases now being treated in hospital

The breaking news just popped on my phone: Omicron cases now being treated in hospital, cabinet minister Nadhim Zahawi tells Sky News

https://apple.news/Aa4ipTTrQtiVeacyE0bb_UA

Finger cross omicron is as mild as we hoped and the hospitalized cases had underlying problems/unvaccinated

Lord almighty. The pot continues to be stirred.

ILookAtTheFloor · 12/12/2021 13:04

No context for this statement.

How many?

Incidental finding?

We have no idea.

ILookAtTheFloor · 12/12/2021 13:06

Plus didn't Javid say that there's 10,000 cases or something like that at the moment?

If so, you would expect some in hospital, right?

NightmareSlashDelightful · 12/12/2021 13:09

Look at how carefully this story is worded. They're not saying in hospital because of omicron.

My read on this is that they're testing in hospitals and finding cases.

Pootle40 · 12/12/2021 13:10

With Covid ? Of course there will be.

Because of Covid.....doesn't state that.

This.

OP a common cold or stomach upset is likely to put my dad or MIL in hospital because they are so frail with underlying conditions so its hard surprising that a few people are currently in hospital. Likewise context is needed did they come in within or with something else and pick it up there?

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/12/2021 13:12

Well, of course they are. Is this news surprising 🤷‍♀️

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 12/12/2021 13:13

Not just a mild illness if they are in hospital then

Unless they are cev/sick/elderly ... then it's to be expected

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2021 13:14

I have no idea why this is in any way surprising.

gherdl · 12/12/2021 13:14

Of course there will be, some folks end up in hospital with a cold or flu, it would be very odd if there wasn't any. They could be about 90, who knows, the DF will probably say fit and healthy and there will be a photo of some poor overweight person

MamanSparkles · 12/12/2021 13:16

I wish people would stop writing off the CEV. Many of us normally live full, active lives. We have kids and jobs and contribute to society.
Just because someone has an underlying condition does not mean they were about to shuffle off this mortal coil, and it does not make it 'ok'.
There are also an awful lot of us with underlying conditions who were groups 4 and 6 in the vaccine roll out, so if we all need hospitalising with omicron, given the speed it transmits, the NHS will have a serious problem.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/12/2021 13:19

Agreed Maman. It's hard to read that the OP hopes it's people like us rather than people like them that are in hospital.

summermode · 12/12/2021 13:20

I thought omicron is milder (hopefully as mild as a common cold) and still hope the "breaking news" is media attention seeking.

Anyway, getting vaccines do help a lot. I am saying as a Mum looking after a poorly little one with Covid. Despite close contact, I somehow do not have symptoms so far (knock knock), thanks to 3 doses of vaccine (I guess). DH had less contact with LO but developed typical symptoms - he is not fully vaccines yet due to medical reason.

It's not surprising at all but there have been lots of people on various threads here insisting it's just a mild cold. 🙄

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2021 13:29

Every headline that appears about Covid it seems there has to be a thread about it.

It will almost certainly be the case they had underlying problems or weren't vaccinated. It makes zero difference.

Most of us aren't at risk of getting very sick from omicron; we are at risk of the health service being overrun with people who did.

TallulahsCurse · 12/12/2021 13:39

And ? There will be people with chicken pox being treated in hospital somewhere in the country.

Yes, it's weird, isn't it? So many people seem to think having an 'underlying condition' means you're about to drop dead at any moment. About a quarter of the population has a long term illness or disability!

I was vaccinated early because I have asthma and another long term illness. I do sport twice a week and climbed a mountain over the summer. This is what most people with 'underlying conditions' look like.

Lockheart · 12/12/2021 13:43

In other news, water is wet.

People can be hospitalised with just a common cold. This news in and of itself does not mean that omicron is more dangerous than initially thought.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2021 13:45

Need more information

How many and define cases

Hospitals cannot run without staff. Super infectiousness is the primary concern here. Remember those parties where of 120 guests 80-90 then became infected? Imagine that happening inside the walls of a hospital.

Even if less virulent, and putting isolation rules aside and the fact that many NGs staff will also have 'underlying conditions', having Covid will still make people unwell enough to be at home making safe staffing levels impossible and driving up deaths of people already in hospital with 'underlying conditions'.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/12/2021 13:52

Where else do you want then treated?

At the vet's? Of course they will be treated in hospital.

All true, but I was responding to OPs point about omicron generally presenting with mild symptoms.

IncessantNameChanger · 12/12/2021 13:58

OP I read yesterday that double vaxxed with AZ gives zero protection from this so you could still be double vaxxed and ill. I'm not going to follow the news . I had AZ and what will be, will be. I just need to get to the end of this week. Then maybe next week I might worry about Christmas.

Really didnt see this still being a issue at the start of the pandemic. I find the constant stress exhausting when I let it occupy my mind. So why let it? Occurding to the news I'm just as likely to get severely ill as if I had done nothing. I cant control that. Bring it on. Now or later. Dont honestly care.
