Worried about vaccine/menstrual link

I'm double jabbed, but since then I've had an awful issue with my periods and I'm a little worried about the booster, I'm wondering if anyone else has similar experiences.

Back in September out of nowhere I had the heaviest bleeding I've ever had in my life, a week after a normal period. It was very distressing as gigantic clots and intermittent very heavy gushing. My normal is very light and pretty regular periods that last 5/6 days, this lasted 10 days and I had to take pills to stop it.

I was told I should see a gp, so when I saw a nurse for something else I asked about it and they said probably a one off and possibly linked to vaccine. Shouldn't happen again, I have the implant but I've had the implant for many many years with no problem like that.

Then it happened again, extremely heavy and unusual bleeding. I saw the gp who also mentioned the vaccine. I've had a clear smear test and have an ultrasound next week but the vaccine is the only thing I can think of causing it if the ultrasound
Is fine. Now again, only 2 weeks after my last bleed I am having pain and unusual bleeding again like both times before it got very very heavy!! I'm talking extremely heavy here.

Just to stress both gp and nurse said there hasn't been official studies and this is anecdotal but I'm a little worried about what will happen after my third and whether this is happening to others too!

How old are you? Are you really in danger from Covid (like over 60, obese, other health factors? )

If not maybe give it a miss?

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 18:40

29 but I live with vulnerable family members and do want to have the booster. I wish they would do studies on this though if there's enough occurrences that drs are talking about it

This hasn’t happened to me, but after my second AZ I had the most horrific, painful and heavy period of my life that caused me to have two days off work. It was physically worse than the early miscarriage I had this year and I’ve always had normal and totally regular periods. I have no doubt that it was caused by the vaccine and as we’re actively TTC I won’t be having the booster yet. Good luck with your ultrasound and I hope it shows nothing untoward - I hope soon that there is more research done into why this is happening and not just brushed off as ‘women’s issues’.

dudsville · 11/12/2021 18:44

I'd caution making links that might or might not be pertinent. A second heavy bleed could be something that needs to be checked out.

underneaththeash · 11/12/2021 18:44

I wouldn't give it a miss, I had my booster 2 weeks before my first child tested positive, everyone else followed (2 more children and DH) and I didn't get it.

Boys and DH have been (and still are) really unwell 2 weeks on.

If you work backwards - how long after the first vaccine did you have period problems? There have been official studies, but they've not shown a link. It's a bit like the MMR doctor who suggested a link between vaccination and autism, it just happened at the same time.

tttigress · 11/12/2021 18:45

Ok, o see, but I think the media is using a lot of fear here, for example the media are giving the message that if an older person gets Covid someone is to blame. There should be no blame for inflecting people with Covid, this isn't the middle ages.

I haven't got to many suggestions then, obviously studies need to be done, but in your case, it wouldn't help because they would take months to come to a conclusion.

Overall I think your health is ultimately your main priority.

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 18:46

It is being checked out. My smear was clear and I have an ultrasound next week.

Both appointments it was the nurse and then the dr that mentioned the vaccine. The nurse said that it can be part of the body's immune response and the gp said there was anecdotal links but no studies to
say for certain.

But if my ultrasound is clear then there is nothing else that's changed or could be causing it Confused

I was fine on my 1st 2 dowses but had booster recently and was passing huge clots. I do always usually have heavy painful periods but don't eve have clots like this, they were as big as my palm and lots of them. No chance miscarriage as husband has had snip.

losingtheplotslowly · 11/12/2021 18:47

I had the AZ twice and I think it was a period after my 2nd one that during my period I woke up one more and I had a heavy bleed. Gushing and dripping on floor. Thank god for towel on bed. Felt like a miscarriage but deffo wasn’t. I put it down to vaccine side effects. After each vaccine my periods were heavier than usual (they are heavy anyway) but I wasn’t too worried. All reported to the yellow card website. Just had my booster and had a period following it which has been normal. Well normal for me anyway.

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 18:48

I've just looked it up and the national institute of health has been given grants to conduct studies on the link between them now and adverse effects

OP posts:
safefacespace · 11/12/2021 18:51

Not sure where pp saw that a study showed no link.. everything I've seen says this needs to be investigated.

I'm just really worried because I've never had an issue with this and it's so far from what's normal for me, and now lasting months

I got double jabbed in July. I bled pretty much every day for 4 months.been on the injection 8 years and never had a bleed. Im permanently on mefenamic acid now after trying to take contraceptive pill on top of the injection. Had all sorts of tests. Waiting on an ultrasound but some of my bleeding was huge huge clots. I won't be going back for a booster yet

DeadGood · 11/12/2021 18:59

But it’s not a secret. There is a link, it’s a normal response to a vaccination and doesn’t only happen with the Covid vaccine. There have been loads of threads about it on here.

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:01

It's normal to have life impairing heavy bleeding and clots for months after a vaccine? And pain? Confused sorry I'm not anti vax by any means but I've never had that with any other one

OP posts:
safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:01

Sorry I'm in the middle of something but by life impairing/impacting I mean so heavy that I couldn't carry on my normal activities whatsoever

OP posts:
safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:03

If it was normally it would be listed in the side effects surely

Not sure what you want me to say? That you’re the only one? You aren’t. If you are concerned that it will happen again after the booster, you are right to be.

What I’m saying is that it’s not on your head - there is a link. I’m sorry it’s been so difficult for you, it sounds really unpleasant.

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:07

@DeadGood I'm just confused that you said this is normal and to be expected when it's not listed as a side affect and then someone else in the thread said categorically there's no link?

There's no clear information

Would you feel better if you googled it and found it listed on the side effects? Would it change your intention to get the booster?

BigBugs · 11/12/2021 19:16

OP, I could have written this post myself! I have had the exact same issues with my cycle after being double jabbed. I also have the implant ( for around 2 years with no problems ). I haven’t spoken to any medical professionals yet but am really concerned as my last period lasted 3 weeks and the last week was so unbelievably heavy and very distressing. Sad I also really want the booster but am very worried now.

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:18

I don't know what the right thing to do would be but hopefully the studies will shed some light on the likelihood and severity rather than leaving women in the dark and confused after these sorts of experiences.

Newrunner29 · 11/12/2021 19:20

Im having periods last few months after years of no bleeding have implant, ive had both jabs and going for booster next week, im NOT not getting it next week because id rather have periods however bad they are than have covid and what extra can happen im already getting periods again just sucking it up as nessassry evil

safefacespace · 11/12/2021 19:20

Sorry to hear @BigBugs Sad exactly, it is really distressing to experience something so far from your normal! And it should be taken seriously as such heavy periods are quite debilitating. Would be good to get checked out I got an appt quickly and they sorted the tests to rule out anything else so it's worth doing Daffodil

OP posts:
Suzi888 · 11/12/2021 19:23

Lots of women have reported this and you are not being unreasonable but people will tell you that you are selfish not having the booster….
You have to do what’s right for you and I don’t think even a G.P can tell you if the booster will affect you. Flowers
It’ll take awhile for all the data and studies to be carried out etc.
I’m 43 AZ no issues, not even sore arm. Everyone else I know has had some side effect but no one has mentioned period problems.

CatMad90 · 11/12/2021 19:25

I've had a coil in for 5 years and my periods have always been very regular and last 7 days. Since having the vaccines my periods are all over the place, bleeding for up to 10 days and then coming on my next period a week early.

I've had a clear smear and was told it was because of the vaccine and it would 'clear up' on its own. But it's still going on 8 months later.
