I made a conscious decision to try and switch off from the media stories and coronavirus news and just try and get in with our lives.
I had been feeling mentally a lot better and almost forgot about covid in the sense of not seeing it in your face every where you turn on social media etc.
Now it's everywhere again 'Plans for plan c' 'lockdown imminent' 'data suggests this wave will be the worst one yet' 'modelling shows new strain could cause 75,000 feather in 5 months'
Are just some of the headlines I've seen today and I just feel so fed up.
Why are we still talking about lockdowns 2 years on?
I'm just so done with it all, it feels like there never will be a normal again, just when we start to get back to doing normal things you get taken back to square one again and told we may have to lockdown or have further restrictions brought back in. It's just so draining 😩

I work at the hospital and we've just been turned into a covid ward (again!). Really is worrying what could be around the corner in the coming months workwise. Really fed up.

@TatianaBis

I never said I thought the pandemic would be over by Christmas. You really need to work on your reading comprehension, hun.

And you need to work on your historical allusions, WWI ring any bells? (hun)

Perhaps your history is as shaky as your geography, which would explain the failure to grasp that the Southern Hemisphere is not in winter flu season.

What are you on about? Top scientists, including one I personally know, were convinced we'd be back to almost normality by spring-summer 2022. Not without any mitigations, but definitely not looking at another lockdown. Previous pandemics didn't have world class vaccines to slow spread and vastly reduce death rates. I'm not sure why you would assume we couldn't expect there to be any difference. What does WWI have to do with anything?

Yes, I do grasp that the South Hemisphere isn't in winter flu season. I've spent much of my life living there. Fairly confident my knowledge of geography and pretty much anything else is far better than yours. What exactly does that have to do with anything? Most of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is having a much better time than we are right now. Perhaps you need to look outside your little bubble.

I honestly don't know how you cope. It must be maddening to have to deal with this for months and end and have muppets going "I dOnT unDeRsTaNd WhAt ThE pRoBlEm iS!' from the comfort of their homes.
Mamababynumber2 · 12/12/2021 15:12

Yes, I know a few people who think the whole thing isn't that bad etc, which is abitnof a kick in the teeth. I don't like change much. I'm a creature of habit Grin so all the uncertainty of what I'm walking into is depressing. Apologies, I'm now just ranting away.

What are you on about?

I could ask the same of you - with your rather simplistic opinions.

There was no scientific consensus as how long this might last: not even as to whether it would remain a pandemic or become endemic. Comparison to other pandemics indicated it could be a good 2 years at least. Spanish flu lasted Feb 1918- April 2020.

There is no scientific data to determine the impact of vaccinations on a global pandemic as the last one was pre mass vaccination. So it was unknown whether the vaccine campaign would be sufficient to get the pandemic under control.

Perhaps you listened principally to those scientists who told you what you wanted to hear?

WWI - ‘It will be over by Christmas’ - still no bells?

Yes, a good two years, which is exactly what I said?! Absolutely nobody of note was saying five years in March 2020, including people a hell of a lot better educated and informed than you.

I never said it would all be over by Christmas. Once again, work on your reading comprehension - it will serve you well.

TatianaBis · 12/12/2021 16:01

I never mentioned 5 years. I said ‘a good 2 years: Ie 2 years at least.

Given that it started winter 2019 absolutely no guarantee it will be over by winter 2021.

I think we’ll just have to accept you don’t get the WWI reference.

Anyway, this is tedious, so I’m off.

I get it - what relevance does it have to something I never said?

I never said the pandemic would be over by winter 2021. I said I never expected things to be so bad, which was a completely reasonable opinion to hold in the face of all the scientific evidence. Until the new variant emerged, it looked like things were going to be very, very good for this Christmas.

You're just making up a bunch of shit I never said and then arguing against it...yes, it IS tedious.

vickyp0llard · 13/12/2021 09:07

Until the new variant emerged, it looked like things were going to be very, very good for this Christmas.

But how was this honestly a surprise? It's a virus that mutates fast, and many countries around the world are largely unvaccinated/can't afford lockdowns - so of course there would be new variants developing all the time. Just like flus and colds, we're never totally immune because there's never a "final" cold or flu. I don't really know why people thought it would be over in 1-2 years. The only way is for it to be brought down to a manageable level, by regularly vaccinating at-risk people, developing good treatments and increasing hospital capacity. Otherwise it will be annual lockdowns.

I mean, there's quite a bit of middle ground between 'surprise' and 'expected'. It was also reasonable to assume a year ago that masks and other mitigations would continue throughout 2021 and that there would be very little chance of another lockdown in January 2022. Most scientists were saying things along those lines.
