Why won’t so many Brits wear a mask

I live in mainland Spain where I haven’t seen a single person without a mask in a supermarket since March 2020. I hear it’s the same in Germany and Italy. What is it about so many British people that makes them not do it when it’s clearly safer. I returned to the UK for a visit and found it horrifying. I was even looked at with disdain for wearing one! I just don’t get it!

Half of the people on the bus last week didn't wear a mask. Large numbers in supermarkets and shopping centres too. Generally groups of people, I find it unlikely they're all exempt. This is in Scotland.

Crinkle77 · 10/12/2021 18:21

Everyone is pissed off at Boris and his mates flouting the rules so think why should they bother?

LuneyTunes · 10/12/2021 18:28

There are some really awful, non COVID colds going round because we have weakened, unchallenged immune systems. We need to learn to love with this and rebuild our immunity in general

A580Hojas · 10/12/2021 18:29

Fuck knows. It pisses me off no end.

TheNicePerkins · 10/12/2021 18:29

Because there is something in the water in the UK, which makes everybody have special needs specifically geared toward wearing a mask. Or they go too much on Facebook.
Or people are so disgusting and they don't know you have to change or wash you mask after wearing it.
Soooo, either they are deficient, or unhygienic. Sounds about right.

I am a bit curious about this statement. Did a group of qualified doctor say this, or some nurse on Facebook?
LuneyTunes · 10/12/2021 18:32

It's quite simple - I said it Xmas Grin

I would love to know whether there is a correlation between education and mask compliance.
Probs depends where you live, urban, rural, mixed class or just one demographic.

I spent some of lockdown with a family member in a large northern town, predominantly working class. The majority did not wear masks at any point, on buses, at work or in shops.

Back home in my more mixed small town, compliance is almost full. I do wonder if class has an impact or education (trust or suspicion of experts).

Only my own experience, it is not sacrosanct!
On a personal note; I comply, had my jabs, but am royally sick of it all, now. What can you do? I feel like many of our previous beliefs about privacy and freedom are in a wobbly situation. I sometimes fear for what may come..

wrappedupforchristmas · 10/12/2021 18:35

In wales we have not stopped wearing masks in shops so i don't know why you are going on about British
I think you mean English.

EdinaMonsoon · 10/12/2021 18:35

Because they're selfish, entitled arseholes?

And for those saying that people are pissed off with Johnson & Co flouting the rules...that is the epitome of cutting off your nose to spite your face. FFS. Such an immature response. Yes, the govt is full of c*nts but that doesn't mean we have to be too.

TheNicePerkins · 10/12/2021 18:35

Ah, edifying. The marvel of the very average joe's wisdom and science.

GarlandsinGreece · 10/12/2021 18:37

I have no clue. I left England twenty years ago, when the country still had oodles of patience for long queues and falling into line for the benefit of the community. I do think attitudes have changed since then, and plenty like to march to the beat of their own drum.

I'm guessing a mixture of greater suspicion of authority than in many other countries, and not so much concern for other people?

(That would largely sum up my feelings. I don't know if there's been any proper research though, rather than random speculation and projection, like the above!)

It’s compulsory where I live too and whilst I e seen people cheating a bit with how they wear it I’ve not seen anyone without one.
Thegreencup · 10/12/2021 18:42

@WatchMyLips

possibly because we were told we didn't have to. I always have but that was my choice
That's it.

People won't wear them unless they must.

luinagreine · 10/12/2021 18:44

I think there is just a big difference in attitude to the pandemic in England than in other countries. They declared it over in July and no matter what is happening around them some people are steadfastly sticking to that.

There is a huge difference between the aggressive 'I'm sick of it, I'm not doing anything else, people have been dying since the beginning of time' attitude(that is on mumsnet anyway) and the 'I'm sick of it but we are in a pandemic, what can you do?' attitude in my country where everyone wears masks including all school children aged 9 and up. It just seems to be a massive cultural difference in how people view the pandemic as a whole.

CelebrateYourOwnWay · 10/12/2021 18:45

YANBU
A significant proportion of the UK population are idiots. It's now a country of entitlement.

Let me guess, you aren't a virologist.
balboacoffee · 10/12/2021 18:50

Maybe because people see footballers, celebs, government etc not wearing masks in close proximity so normal folk don't see the point in wearing one when your not near a single person for more than 2 minutes in a shopping place.

SlashBeef · 10/12/2021 18:51

We are too soft 🤷‍♀️ I doubt all of these "exemption" excuses wash with Spanish police whereas here you get away it.

MrsMattMurdock · 10/12/2021 18:52

Opinions about whether or not masks work at reducing the spread of coronavirus are irrelevant when there is plentiful evidence linking their use to this outcome. You literally just have to Google it. But if you don't want it to be true, then why bother? The truth is that while a proportion of the blame can be laid at second of the population being selfish fuckwits, there are serious issues with public health messaging which would take years to repair. We know that in some societies people have all been wearing masks on public transport for years during winter or if they have a cold, as a basic courtesy to others. Not sure why we can't get our heads round that concept really. Oh wait it's that good old British exceptionalism which is serving us so well in other areas. Masks bring freedom because they allow us to carry on relatively normally. They are not any kind of infringement of rights. And once more for anyone who doesn't get it, while serious illness due to covid is rare, on a population level it is huge because it stops people getting normal medical treatment. I don't understand why people cannot join the dots here.

Silverswirl · 10/12/2021 18:52

Because they are fucking horrible to breathe through and actually unless you wear the right ones do little.
Also covid is a mild virus or cold for the vast majority HTH

MrsMattMurdock · 10/12/2021 18:54

"Learning to live with this" means having a non-functioning health service as a result. Plus the obvious human costs, goes without saying.

PferdeMerde · 10/12/2021 18:55

There’s a whole Covid board. You don’t need to clog up the other boards with threads that have already been done to death.
