Anyone else think our government took the royal piss last Christmas?

So the whole Downing Street party last year...this has really riled me. They put us all on restrictions against seeing family and friends while they all had a Christmas piss up with wine, cheese and no social distancing.
My MIL spent last Christmas alone 80 miles away as she didn't want to breach any rules, I know she could have come as she lives alone but she didn't believe it was allowed.
Now there's talk of restrictions on this Christmas? Well I'm sorry but I won't be complying with any restrictions over Christmas, I'll be seeing family as planned.
Our government is beyond useless

@Onandoff

I have to live with the fact I couldn’t visit my 70 year old mother while she died a slow death hospitalised for a month over Christmas.

While this bunch were partying. It’s a kick

I am so very sorry. I can’t imagine your grief. I hope there’s a trial for the people who have done this to us as a nation. It’s totally inhumane.
CrunchyCarrot · 08/12/2021 11:27

They should all be out of office immediately. Happy Christmas, Tory Party. Angry

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 08/12/2021 11:28

Press conference today with possible tighter restrictions to come. Fuck. That.

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2021 11:28

Gove / Cummings all over this ( is just my opinion )
I think most leaks would lead back to them to be honest.

Like anyone is going to comply now!

Nobody will bother now surely ??.. I heard that Prof Ferguson is banging on about more restrictions etc.
VanillaIce1 · 08/12/2021 11:30

I watched the report on itv news at 10 last night. I've never seen them report a story with so much anger, really hope people take notice now of the Tory party.

changingstages · 08/12/2021 11:30

They are awful. They're awful, grasping Tory cunts. But they have a huge majority so it's going to be so hard to shift them.

I followed the rules. And if restrictions were introduced again, we'd follow those too because I still - despite the piss taking on here the whole time that nobody could possibly be doing anything for altruistic reasons - believe that it's possible to do things for the greater good. But I'd understand why others didn't.

I actually believe that there would still be a reasonably high general compliance anyway (unless it was something like the catastrophic hard lockdown days before Christmas of last year) but they've damaged any public confidence in them at the most dangerous time. I hate them with such a passion.

Dadhadaproton · 08/12/2021 11:30

However I did always say from the word go that people with money/ stately homes/ in power had a totally different lockdown to the rest of us and that included the government.

I passed the stately home of a neighbour of ours and watched the owner playing on the grass with his children and remember thinking people can come in and out at will and no one would have a clue who was there and what they were doing.
I’m sure I was not the only one who thought like that.

IrrelevantNameChange · 08/12/2021 11:36

Ferguson is as hypocritical as the government, ignoring the rules so he can get laid, pathetic that these hypocrites continue to call for/implement restrictions that they themselves do not abide

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 08/12/2021 11:36

We lost 2 elderly family members just into the new year - great grandparents who adored my DC and we always made a special trip to the other end of the country to see them. Last year they were terrified we'd all be arrested, so we cancelled because the government had frightened them into submission. They died within a fortnight of each other, not covid related in the slightest. Both were ill and we all knew it would be their last Christmas. They spent it alone.

This government has fiddles while Rome burns.

There's an old saying on MN and I'm going to apply it to the government and any new restrictions brought in.. FUCK OFF TO THE FAR SIDE OF FUCK, AND WHEN YOU GET THERE FUCK OFF SOME MORE.

Pardon my language but I'm very angry this morning.

IrrelevantNameChange · 08/12/2021 11:37

The absolute fucking audacity of the lot of them

Cyrilgoggin · 08/12/2021 11:38

London was in Tier 4 by Xmas, as were many places. No mixing at all, not even on Xmas day. I wasn't able to spend it with a close family member. I wasn't able to be at their bedside when they died. My elderly neighbours weren't able to spend Xmas with their children and grandchildren who live a mile away. One of them has since died. I will never forgive this. They are disgusting. Johnson needs to show his face and be accountable.

Skysblue · 08/12/2021 11:42

They were literally laughing at us for following the laws they made.

The way Allegra cracks up when she says “and there was no social distancing” is particularly repulsive.

ItsSunnyOutside · 08/12/2021 11:44

It's the way they had that mock press conference - they are literally laughing whilst us normal people genuinely tried to do the right thing, lots of people were miserable and lonely last year. This government really don't care about any of us. You are deluded if you think they do.

I'm genuinely baffled as to who voted for this government? Why?

UselessASD · 08/12/2021 11:44

Dreadful behaviour whether strictly legal or not. There is rightly huge anger and sadness including on this thread.

Im cynical. I would like to know what bad news is being buried by this current story. Surely the government would have made a fulsome apology, the press officer sacked and move on. So if they haven’t what I’d conveniently under the radar?

There are two I saw. Failure of a company that won tender for tuition to catch up to recruit and the fact children are behind. An apology related to Grenfell

A senior Tory MP laid down the gauntlet for Boris Johnson at PMQs this noon, telling The Telegraph: "The PM has got to get out from under any question of misleading the House last week. If he doesn’t do that, he’s in very big trouble.

"He can’t survive if he tries to brazen it out. Misleading the House is an incredibly serious offence and if you do it, you're in resignation territory."

"I don't think he can say he didn't know about it. If Allegra knew about it, he cannot say that."

The MP added: "The mood in the party is pretty bleak. The trouble is Boris was great at getting through Brexit, but he's not a Government creature. He doesn’t operate though Government structures.

"This will all end terribly. I expect he will end up in the escape pod, like a James Bond villain - escaping with his wife and children."

@Lostinacloud

The timing of this leak is curious, I wonder what it is preparing us for?

But generally, I hope this makes even more people aware of what some of us have been aware of for a year - all of these Covid restrictions and the continued reaction is unjustified and unnecessary. If when we were all being told not to see our own families last year they were all busy having a party and laughing about it then where’s the actual danger?
It’s the same in France, kids from age 6 in masks all day at school, including at playtime outside and after school activities starting to be cancelled and meanwhile, the president and prime minister waltz around unmasked shaking hands and having parties. Only the waiters in masks. Then low and behold, a few days after the prime minister told everyone to remember not to shake hands and keep distance he tests positive for Covid - not a word said. Just what the fucking hell is going on?

Too much doesn’t add up anymore and it’s up to all of us to ask the questions and challenge the restrictions. Had enough. Had enough of my kids beating the brunt while these assholes carry on as normal and even laugh at us for obeying.

Ah Plan B supposedly about to be announced.

So was this released as part of a right wing move to undermine it from within?

Skysblue · 08/12/2021 11:46

I was interested to read that as well as being a close friend of BJ’s wife,Allegra Stratton is married to The Spectator’s political editor, and that Rishi Sunak was best man at her wedding and she’s godmother to his children.

Small world in Westminster political journalism isn’t it.

But I’m sure that she got her job on merit and that press coverage of this issue is going to be completely fair and unbiased 🤔

EmmaOvary · 08/12/2021 11:47

@Watapalava "tbh i cant believe anyone followed such ridiculous rules at xmas time anyway - everyone i know just did what they want and more fool those that didn't. Even now, with everything people know, some still follow every rules to the letter - some aren't even official rules - just made up rules. Its like noone can think for themselves."

Gosh I know. It's almost as if there's a virus out there that's killed over 5million people. Trying to cut transmission! What are people thinking?!

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2021 11:54

ITV news was livid late last night.
I did note that Robert Peston looked a bit embarrassed, but Tom Bradbury didn't hold back at all , it was very unusual.

RedToothBrush · 08/12/2021 11:54

This is precisely my thoughts. Its a little too convenient.

Strikes me as either someone with a grudge or someone with an agenda - most likely with leadership ambitions sensing a moment of weakness or someone trying to undermine a growing feeling that more restrictions are about to be introduced.

This didn't surface now for no reason. Someone has been sitting on that video for nearly a year waiting for an opportunity to use it.

Make of that what you will.

There is no such thing as coincidence in politics.

The other thing I wondered, is there going to be a move for another leader?

Is this a move to depose Johnson for maybe Sunak or Gove?

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 08/12/2021 11:58

@Notonthestairs

I assumed Gove + Murdoch leaked with an anti restrictions agenda.

I'm not sure Cummings ever thought restrictions included him.

This would be my assumption. Backed by other media powers that don't want their personal finances impacted by further restrictions (e.g. those with corporate property investments).
vera99 · 08/12/2021 11:59

PMQs in a minute.
