Why can't people wear masks?

TomAllenWife · 06/12/2021 18:24

Properly!!!! It drives me insane!!!!

Either wear it or don't, but for the love of god stop wearing it on your chin or under your nose because it's doing fuck all

Surely it's not rocket science?

I was on a flight yesterday and would say a large amount of passengers were wandering around with masks under their chins, or just over their mouths

OP posts:

What would be the point in getting another mask that 'works'? Unless you are going to go full protection you may as not bother. If masks worked we would not have had the huge waves we saw last year and last winter, when everyone and his dog was compliant. They don't do very much, and everyone knows it. They are simply there to remind people a virus is around, and to take care. Thats it.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 07/12/2021 07:57

@Fairylights25

Most people realise that mask wearing is an utter waste of time, and will not stop a highly transmissible virus that is airbourne from infectingt them unless they are going to wear goggles and full ppe in Waitrose et al. They wear them because they have to, and we are all virtual signalling but they don't have to do it 'well' or care about it.

Why do you care op? Seriously why -

Many people think that. But they’re not “realising” that masks don’t work, they’re just plain wrong.
FindingMeno · 07/12/2021 07:59

I'm asthmatic and sometimes if I've done a flight of stairs I have to pull my mask down for a bit.

Fairylights25 · 07/12/2021 07:59

okay....well I don't care what your thoughts are about masks. They really don't work because the most likely place you will catch covid is in yours or someone else's home - from children, close family or friends when you will not be wearing a mask!

SophiesMummySaid · 07/12/2021 08:01

OP I have given up on relying on the courtesy of other people wearing a mask to reduce the risk of them transmitting virus to me. I have bought fitted masks - FFP2 that protect the wearer well, even in areas of high risk (ie indoor areas where others aren’t mask wearing).

Parker231 · 07/12/2021 08:02

For those saying masks don’t work, are you a doctor or virologist?

Fairylights25 · 07/12/2021 08:06

Without social distancing masks will do precious little Parker.

ShiftingSands21 · 07/12/2021 08:09

I wear my surgical mask properly. Masks are effective but as far as I can tell the evidence shows that they are somewhat effective, not super effective. It’s easy to understand that someone would not feel it’s worth it to them looking at the slightly mixed bag of evidence and when you see 2 studies that contradict one another and the advice keeps changing. Also with the weather lately my mask is always getting wet at which point it’s effectiveness would be seriously hampered -arguably may as well take it off. The whole thing is complicated and I can easily understand why you might feel like your gut instinct is as reliable.

MatildaIThink · 07/12/2021 08:09

@TinaWeymouthsBass

The study does not actually support what the Guardian article says, it makes specific reference to people who wear masks all the time being 53% less likely to catch the virus, but they are also the people who go out less often, avoid large groups and gatherings etc. and due to the lack of challenge trials it cannot be differentiated between reduction in transmission from the maskjtself and the behavioural differences of the full time mask wears vs part time, ineffectivly worn and non-mask wearers.

Mask wearing of masks does reduce the spread of Covid, by how much depends on the type of mask, how it is used and worn, the situations where it is worn and the other measures taken concurrently. The real world figure for mask wearing alone is somewhere between less than

Fairylights25 · 07/12/2021 08:10

Your children will be playing with each other all day at school, people are packed in nightclubs, pubs and parties - do you really think a flimsy mask in the supermarket will save you if your child comes home with covid? Your teen returns from a festival with covid? Or your parent catches it as the boules club Christmas party? No, the mask will do nothing, because your household interaction will be the most likely way you will catch covid. It always was, and it always will be. Without the social distancing, and stopping all of the above it is likely to do next to nothing. Germany is proof that. They are wearing masks everywhere and always did, and sd in fact and yet the infection rate is rocketing.

ShiftingSands21 · 07/12/2021 08:12

I am really confused when I see people wearing the FFP2/3 masks with massive gaps around their face. That’s a real head scratcher that is.

MatildaIThink · 07/12/2021 08:13

@Whyisitsodifficult

Masks are as effective as a pair of pants holding a fart in!
Masks are more effective than that as a fart is gas, where as the virus is transmitted by airborne particles in aerosolised water droplets which are several orders of magnitude larger.

The Japanese also make activated charcoal pants and liners which will hold a fart in.

Gearedtoyou · 07/12/2021 08:14

I wear my mask properly in all the places I need to wear one, but on the whole my "contacts" in those places are fleeting and/or distant.

There's far more risk in places where they aren't required. When I'm having coffee with friends, in the pub, in school, Sunday dinner at my parents....

ImInStealthMode · 07/12/2021 08:19

Because as a glasses wearer I can't fucking see! I've tried literally dozens of different masks and only ever found one that doesn't make my glasses steam up (much) but that one needs regular washing.

If I know I have a long day of needing to wear one (a big shop, or travelling, or medical appointments) I'll put in the contact lenses I find drying and uncomfortable. If I'm just needing to pop to a shop for milk unplanned then I have the choice between no mask or no sight. I'd be much more of a liability and danger to the public with no sight.

Thegreencup · 07/12/2021 08:20

I like the way OP is complaining about being on a flight with no one wearing masks. Surely travelling isn't helpful with the spread of the virus?

rrhuth · 07/12/2021 08:21

Because some people are tosspots. They are argumentative, awkward, difficult, obstructive, childish tosspots.

Allthatglittersandgold · 07/12/2021 08:22

If it bothers you that much don't get on a plane 🙄

Roselilly36 · 07/12/2021 08:22

@Buzzinwithbez

Can only speak for myself. I go light headed, then the floor starts to move like an old bouncy lift.

I don't care where our how others wear their masks. I much prefer seeing faces properly.

Me too.
Northernsoullover · 07/12/2021 08:22

Same old excuses as in 2020. They still don't wash. It's pathetic. Seeing my sweet father coping with his and his COPD puts a lot (not all) of you to shame. Like a big bunch of whiny babies. I do understand one of the posters here whose husband is terminally ill but the rest. No.

rrhuth · 07/12/2021 08:24

This must be one of the most tosspot-esque things I've read.

luckylavender · 07/12/2021 08:28

@Fairylights25 - that's simply not true. This country has never been properly mask compliant. Plenty of people who pretended they were exempt (not really exempt people, no issue there), wore them incorrectly, wore the same one for weeks without washing it. Partly this is due to the early scientific response, partly because we like to think we're better than / different to everyone else.

Parker231 · 07/12/2021 08:29

If you don’t like wearing a mask, don’t go on public transport or into shops.

Fairylights25 · 07/12/2021 08:41

lucky I don't know where you live but I live in the UK and for the whole of 2020 more or less every single person wore a mask, and properly and the infection rate only came down with a full lockdown.

You can bleat that masks are saving the world from this deadly virus, but that doesn't make it actually true. The only thing that effectively stops covid spreading is a full lockdown, and we ain't doing that again.

I don't like masks so I shop on line, drive everywhere and go to restaurants, bars and parties etc to socialise where it is gloriously mask free. It really doesn't bother me at all. I hate shopping anyway.

LuneyTunes · 07/12/2021 08:45

It is impossible to see as a glasses wearer and also wear a mask. I take off my glasses to do a shop (squinting at the labels etc.) but can make it work as not majorly poorly sighted, but it is really hard if you are due to condensation

We all wear glasses and have found ways to stop this.

Different masks etc.

Have you tried a disposable under a fabric mask? This has completely solved the issue for one of the DC who can now see fine for eight hours straight.
