Hi all, Dp was close contact with someone with covid about 5 days ago confirmed a couple days later when contact had positive pcr. Dp pcr tested Friday and came back yesterday negative and multiple lft's negative. Still been cautious this weekend but we have been out due to negative test result. Shopping, dropped Dd off at a birthday party etc.

Anyway, today he decided to do another pcr ready for the week ahead of work - very busy at work. No results yet. But did an LFT and a very bright line positive appeared almost instantly. Is this how quick it can happen? From negative pcr 48 hours ago to very bold line?

He has been in work up until Friday - but maybe he wasn't so contagious then as pcr was negative Friday evening.

He hasn't got any specific covid symptoms but had a very bad headache today but headaches aren't uncommon for him. Also a very slight tickle in his throat. It's going to get worse isn't it?!

I'm not sure what the point of this post is but we've managed to avoid covid so far and it's typical we get it now at Christmas. Feeling awful dc may miss all the Christmas stuff at school 😢😢 my eldests last year at primary too! 😢😢

Sorry to hear that! :-(

But to answer your question, yes, because of the virus’s incubation period it is possible to test negative for several days followed by a positive. That’s why where I live in Canada, if a child is a close contact they won’t even bother testing until Day 5. :-(

My sons went from nothing to a district line 2 days later

SilverGlitterBaubles · 05/12/2021 20:06

Yep afraid so. DH and DD first main symptom was a headache and both had instant positive LFTs.

gamerchick · 05/12/2021 20:09

Yeah doesn't sound good OP. One day with kid negative. The next feeling rough and an instant positive LFT then positive PCR.

He needs to do a PCR first thing.

LowlyTheWorm · 05/12/2021 20:12

The new strain of covid apparently has very clear LFT lines… 😬

He did one today so assuming that'll be positive so hopefully won't need another!

He caught it off a colleague for sure and there's been no inkling that his colleague has had the new strain so hopefully not 🤯🤷‍♀️

When dd had COVID, her LFTs came up straight away, the positive line was strong before the test line came up. I was really surprised.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 05/12/2021 20:21

Yes, the second line came up instantly one day, but the previous few days had all been negative.

user1485155939 · 05/12/2021 20:21

My little girl had a negative lft in the morning, went to school, came home poorly a few hours later and tested positive on a lft followed by a positive pcr.

Blupblup · 05/12/2021 20:23

Yes, happened that way with both me and DH. He tested positive first, I was negative for 2 more days. Tested in the morning, negative. Went for PCR same day. Tested again in the evening with a tickly throat and had the faintest of faint lines. Next morning - positive PCR result and a blazing strong line on an LFT. I'd been out doing school run etc the day before because I'd had a negative LFT.

I was having a conversation with husband tonight. Much rather get it now than over Christmas. I'm fully expecting the twat over Christmas the rate this new variant is spreading.

Hope he has an easyish ride OP.

Bobholll · 05/12/2021 20:24

The colleague would know if it was Omicron. They are sequencing for it. Don’t panic about that.

I had delta (I presume) in early October & I got the brightest, instant line you’ve ever seen! As did all the mums attending a kids birthday party a few days earlier. So that’s nothing new.

Hopefully your kids can get back to school. PCR test them along with your partner and if negative, all good & they won’t miss too much of the fun stuff! My kids didn’t catch it from me at all despite me not isolating from them at all (lone parenting for part of the week). We did daily LF’s & PCRs on day 2 & day 9. All negative & no symptoms so pretty convinced they didn’t get it!

Yes. This happened with the first lft Dp did this evening. It came up before the test line too! There was blood on the swab so he did another that wasn't quite as quick but still pretty quick! Gobsmacked moment for sure I think! We've avoided covid for so long now and after negative pcr on Friday he wasn't expecting it.

Just goes to show that sometimes it's just too soon to test if you've been a close contact!

I've actually had a pcr today due to throat and mild cough. It'll be interesting what my result is. I've been negative on lft and likely caught what I got off dd - who tested negative for covid (twice by pcr in the last couple weeks).

DS had a negative PCR then 12 hours later had a positive LFT. It was a very dark line within seconds so can't think why the PCR didn't pick it up. Confirmed by PCR the following day.

That is true. Hopefully we'll all be back to normal for the week before Christmas so we can make it fun for the kids! 😢

In some ways I may relax about covid. I've been fully expecting to catch it at one point and I'm always anxious about getting it or spreading it. It might make me a little more relaxed about it - but will remain vigilant still obviously and I know you can catch it again!

Same for me. Negative LFTs and PCR all week (dh has covid). Took LFT today, clearest line ever. Awaiting PCR result but think it’s a foregone conclusion. Had headache last night, didn’t know that could be an early symptom.

HomeCountiesMum · 05/12/2021 20:32

My LFTs took six days to go positive ...even though I suspected I had Covid for about a week!

Kangaruby · 05/12/2021 20:32

My lft's line came up straight away and headache was main symptom, no one else in house got it

If he hadn't been a close contact During the week, I don't think he would have tested today as headache is so usual for him - and me! His other symptoms are very mild, they could change though of course!

Yeah. 3 people in our household had immediate positive lateral flow test with one us getting a negative the day before and another a negative two days before. I was amazed at how strong and how fast the tests were.

Whatdoyawannado · 05/12/2021 20:51

My DH's main symptoms so far has been a headache, very slight dry cough and fatigue. He's on day 3. No sign of it getting worse so far. Fingers crossed for your DH.

I’ve just had this ‘argument‘ with DH. His work say if someone in his household has a positive pcr, he must go for a test immediately. I reckon it would be much better to leave it a couple of days to give the virus a chance to take hold in your system. Unless you catch it from the same place, it would be Unusual/unlucky to catch it from your household contact on day 0 I think.

IWishTheBishopWell · 05/12/2021 21:01

I tested positive in August. I took a LFT on the Friday to attend a wedding. Negative. A LFT on the Sunday evening (at 9pm) was negative. I woke up feeling unwell on the Monday morning (awful headache) so took another LFT at 8am. It showed positive almost straight away, less then 12 hours after the last test had been negative.
