How have you managed to avoid contracting covid?

OP posts:
firstimemamma · 05/12/2021 07:32

Dh working in nhs frontline that should've said

Christmas3143 · 05/12/2021 07:38

Hopefully. Managed to avoid it so far but since yesterday I've had a tickly cough so doing s test. I'm sure I've just caught it off the kids though - they've had the same the same this week with negative pcr tests.

SSOYS · 05/12/2021 07:41

We’ve all had it, apart from DH who travels by tube every day and works in an office in close contact with others. Didn’t catch it from me or DC either despite not isolating from us. Probably just luck combined with a good vaccine response.

MelonTits · 05/12/2021 07:43

I assume that I have but symptomless.

Was on maternity leave during first lockdown so stayed at home a lot, but since returning to work I’ve socialised, worked very closely with people, DC at nursery, DH key worker throughout. Been wearing masks indoors since early summer 2020 and always practiced good respiratory hygiene and hand hygiene anyway.

DickMabutt73962 · 05/12/2021 07:50

Either luck or had it and was asymptomatic so didn't realise.

That being said I really know only a handful of friends/family who've had it, so I guess it really comes down to statistics.

mightbeyesmightbeno · 05/12/2021 07:53

I reckon I've had it (or have it now - on-going "cold"), but just without knowing! All tests have always been negative. I'm a respiratory nurse so no idea how I've avoided it.

SoItWas · 05/12/2021 07:53

Me, ds, my mother, father, sister, ex mil and ex fil (what I think of as ds and I's close family), have all managed to escape it somehow.

Some more distant family have had it, ds's uncle, my cousins.

WakeUpLockie · 05/12/2021 07:55

Surely most people haven’t had it? I don’t think I know any friends/family who have.

Except we are pretty certain DH had it early March 2020 (all the awful symptoms and same commuter train that goes through the place with first local case)

Me and kids didn’t get it - I have a good immune system historically although am being investigated for various autoimmune issues (a long wait!).

Lucky that DH can WFH and I SAHM so simple for us to homeschool. I think that’s the main factor. Very lucky.

Follows guidance, got jabs.

🤷🏻‍♀️

CaptainChannel · 05/12/2021 07:55

No idea. I work in a secondary school where covid went nuts at the beginning of term - so many kids and staff with it and I teach hundreds of kids per week.
I also have a y10 form who all got it bar 3 and my teaching room has no opening windows. I am very surprised not too have knowingly had it.

SoItWas · 05/12/2021 07:58

I was quite ill around the end February/start of March 2020, most symptoms only my temp was down, instead of up.

This was before testing, so I may possibly have had a mild case, right at the beginning. I applied for an antibody test, to seen if I'd had it, but wasn't eligible.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 05/12/2021 08:18

Possibly living in an area with low cases for the majority of the pandemic.

Although we’ve had close contacts, so maybe just luck!

ZoBo123 · 05/12/2021 08:21

I haven't had it and done nothing particularly to prevent getting it either. Both me and DH worked throughout with children attending school as key workers children. DH had it and we didn't isolate at home from him (this was when everyone in the house had to stay in) me or the children didn't get it. It has gone round the kids nurseries and schools with children that are close to mine, still not caught it. We have regularly tested too. Been to packed venues, football matches, cinemas, pubs, restaurants all within the rules but still not caught it. But I catch everything. I regularly get colds always have done. I wonder if some people are naturally maybe genetically (given my kids haven't had it either) not going to get it.

SpringRainbow · 05/12/2021 08:25

I have no idea really. We have been ‘careful’ as much as we can.

2 kids at school and a DH who is a key worker (not medical).

I suspect (despite non of us ever tested positive) we have had it but it’s been asymptomatic.

It doesn’t make sense to me that we have never had Covid in this house.

ItsSnowJokes · 05/12/2021 08:31

Haven't had it here, confirmed by antibody blood tests every 3 months. Daughter had it over the summer and we didn't catch it off her. We were on a vaccine trial so have been rigorous about testing for a long list of symptoms (as part of the trial) and nothing even when family have friends have all succumbed.

Exhausteddog · 05/12/2021 08:34

I haven't yet but I commute to work every day on crowded trains and work alongside people who are anti vax and I don't think would test for symptoms. I have 2 kids at school , one of whom had it a few weeks ago.
I feel its a case of when I get it, not if, but so far not had it AFAIK.

wasthataburp · 05/12/2021 08:34

I really dont know because I didn't really not socialise or see family / friends etc in 2020 or earlier this year and no one I our household is vaccinated. I also don't wear a mask. But I do clean and sanitise religiously and disinfect everything

IcedWinterPenguin · 05/12/2021 08:34

@Icantremembermyusername

Apparently so! Fingers crossed. I was really ill cough etc, just as it hit the news, so I think I might have had it then. One of the first schools to be closed pre Lockdown where I am!
Same with me. I was incredibly ill and returned to work too early on march 6 2020. (I recall it as I had a promotion interview that day. Got the propmotion, quite the job a year later).

My Dcs have so far missed it and at one point DS2 had 16 our of his class of 23 have it. DS1's class is home schooling next week due to similar numbers. All 3 of us have chronic asthma and DS1 has immune deficiency issues. We keep testing negative and I feel astounded it has not hit us yet.

KatherineJaneway · 05/12/2021 08:39

Been lucky I guess but then I've never had flu so far as I remember. I go out but for a lot of the last 21 months I've worked at home, gone to the gym, gone to Tesco and once weekly in the office.

Buzzinwithbez · 05/12/2021 09:03

No idea. I've lived life as normally as I can and been to a couple of busy, sweaty gigs right up front.
I had the cold from hell around September, and we'd only had a quiet camping trip at the time.

I was ill December/Jan 2019/20 for about 5 weeks, as were quite a few of my friends. I've never known anything like it and it's left me with a weakness for kidney infections. To my knowledge, none of us have had covid since then.

careerchangeperhaps · 05/12/2021 09:32

I had the Moderna vaccine. I've yet to know anyone who had both doses of this who's subsequently caught Covid. But statistically my observations are skewed, of course, as Moderna wasn't given as often as Pfizer or AZ. So probably just luck.

I go out and about but not excessively. Both kids in school. Neither are vaccinated (under 12). I work out of home but in a small office and don't have regular contact with clients. I have hobbies that bring me into weekly contact with various other people from a range of other towns / backgrounds etc. The kids play sport and go to Scouts / Cubs etc where again they're mixing with kids besides those they mix with at school. I don't travel out of our region often though (although our region has one of the highest Covid rates nationally).

Xmasprrssiehelp · 05/12/2021 09:35

WFH, mask wearing, avoiding indoor crowded places, and getting vaccinated as soon as it was offered.

I had an antibody test in august and it came back clear so deffo not had it. I do have 1 DS in primary so part of me think we will get it eventually, but I also have my booster this week so feeling hopefully I won’t!

Xmasprrssiehelp · 05/12/2021 09:38

Oh and my local area has a 93% >12, first dose vaccine rate - so I feel incredible safe going round the local shops etc

LindaEllen · 05/12/2021 10:15

I think quite a lot of people WILL have had it, but just didn't know. When I had it, I wouldn't have even thought to test if DP didn't have it at the time. The symptoms were almost negligible.

MoiraNotRuby · 05/12/2021 10:19

For me, its been down to mind over matter. I simply decided to fight, that I've Got This, that I would have a positive mindset.

(Obviously not really. But that's what so many people say about cancer and it really fucks me off).

CaliforniaDrumming · 05/12/2021 10:21

I have been very lucky, I guess. Because I take either the Tube or a bus everyday. I did a long haul flight to see family. I have gone to a couple of West End plays. DS got Covid but DH and I managed to avoid it. Just luck!

DH and I have been vaxxed with AZ and just got our Moderna boosters. We also mask everywhere and wear N-95 masks on the Tube.
