How have you managed to avoid contracting covid?

OP posts:
Needadviceagain · 04/12/2021 23:05

I'm first aider and support staff in a primary school working across y1-y6. Have 1 of my own in primary and 2 in secondary. Dh was working covid ward in local hospital and also at our nearest nightingale for a few months. None of you have caught it. We've done busy events, overcrowded trains, plenty of meals out, sleepovers, house full of teens on a regular basis, both schools rife with covid at the mo but still managed to avoid it without doing more than is mandatory

Jenster03 · 04/12/2021 23:05

Are some people just naturally immune? Might seem like a daft question but there are people out there who never seem to catch norovirus, for example.

Didiusfalco · 04/12/2021 23:05

I’ve been wondering this too. Worked all through the pandemic. Kids at two different schools. Nothing. Is it just a numbers game and at some point it will catch up with us?

arethereanyleftatall · 04/12/2021 23:09

No idea. And as a swimming teacher who teaches under 5s, I've had kids cough on me left right and centre. Teach over 300 kids a week within 1m of them all. I go out as normal, have my own dc, my ex is a dentist...and none of us have had it.

MatildaJayne · 04/12/2021 23:10

No idea. I work in a secondary school. We had 1/4 off with Covid before half term. I’ve now had my booster, so maybe I’ve been lucky and/or jabs have helped. 10 million positive tests so far in the U.K., so only 1 in 6 or so who actually know they’ve had it.

Dancingsmile · 04/12/2021 23:16

You might have had it and not had any symptoms. As far as I'm aware I haven't had it but some how appeared not to catch it off my H twice !

Jenasaurus · 04/12/2021 23:24

I am worried by posting this I may tempt fate, my family seems to have avoided it, we live in several houseolds as below

Household 1
Me - (50s) overweight, ex smoker, no health issues, work for ambulance trust but from home since March 2020
DD - (26) - imune issues but worked throughout as nursery teacher, everyone of her colleagues caught Covid, except for her, she has visited many hospitals for other reasons during this time )being investgated for immune issues with her thyroid and lymph nodes) goes out on the bus as cant drive, but wears a mask and uses hand sanitiser
DDS BF (21) - Worked throughout in an office admin role, plays football at least twice a week and regularly watches Chelsea play, attended a funeral, and a couple of family partys since Covid Began

Household 2
DS - (30s) - worked whole time, in London and South east visiting banks, attends the gym and watches arsenal play regularly
DS, GF (28) = Works in London, although one day from home a week and was initialy furloughed but now back in the officer, drives rather than catches the train and tube, mainly stays home but does occassionally visit her mum and nan in Kent

Household 3
DS - Age 28 -= Asthmatic, works for the same ambulance trust as me, but from home since March 2020, vaccinated twice and received booster - visited friends in Manchester, and London and watches Arsenal play. plus a few trips to the pub
DS GF - age 27 - Caught Covid after her 2nd jab, she works as a nurse so was expected, plus visits London and Ireland regularly. No one else in family has caught Covid

toomuchlaundry · 04/12/2021 23:24

Have just developed a cough so am wondering whether my luck has run out! Have booked first PCR

Moonlaserbearwolf · 04/12/2021 23:25

If you don't test yourself routinely, you may have had it without realising. I only found out I had it because I have to test regularly for work. I had a few vague symptoms, but not enough to test for covid.

onlychildhamster · 04/12/2021 23:25

I have no idea.

DH is on the tube everyday to go to his office in Canary Wharf- so that is the busiest route ever- northern change to jubilee.

We are car free so we used public transport even at height of lockdown as the nearest big tesco is a 20 minute walk away which is harder when you have to lug a really heavy shopping trolley. We always wear masks though!

We don't have DC so that is probably a contributing factor.

We have flown twice since the pandemic, we go to shops and restaurants as soon as we are allowed so not super conservative either.

I think we have fewer contacts than most people- often family but I do go to stuff like synagogue (but that is probably the most covid safe setting ever ) and I have also met friends socially. However, none of my friends are unvaxed.

Maybe its the FFP2 masks that DH insisted we wear but probably just luck.

raviolo · 04/12/2021 23:29

No idea I was in and out of hospital last year too. I don't know anyone who's had it either

onlychildhamster · 04/12/2021 23:31

@Jenster03

www.sciencenews.org/article/ancient-coronavirus-epidemic-east-asia-dna-covid

'These findings “show that East Asians have been exposed to coronavirus-like epidemics for a long time and are more [genetically] adapted to epidemics of these viruses,” says evolutionary geneticist Lluis Quintana-Murci of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, who was not involved in the new study.
It’s possible that DNA adjustments to coronavirus epidemics over many thousands of years may contribute to lower COVID-19 infection and death rates reported in East Asian nations, versus European countries and the United States, Quintana-Murci speculates. But it’s unknown at this point what, if any, effect those DNA tweaks could have'

I am of East Asian descent and maybe if my DH wasn't white, I would have thought this is a contributing factor...

onlychildhamster · 04/12/2021 23:33

@Jenster03 Cos he hasn't had covid either and he tests himself weekly...

AllKnowingGerbil · 04/12/2021 23:35

I dont go out that often. Wear a mask in busy places. Aware of my distance from people. Dont take public transport. Work from home. Avoid buffets!

Still think its luck though.

If/When I do get it I'm guessing it'll be via my 7yo DC.

Gertie75 · 04/12/2021 23:52

A lot of us may have had it without knowing, I don't think I've had it but don't do the tests on a regular basis (I would if I had symptoms).

I've got two primary aged kids both of whom have had friends test positive, dh and I work with the public and I ditched my mask on freedom day.

I did get that "super-cold" that was doing the rounds a few weeks ago and felt dreadful (had negative ltf and pcr)

sofakingcool · 05/12/2021 00:10

I managed to avoid it until this week even whilst working with pre schoolers (so no social distancing - ever!), and two teens who attend education. I don't know how I've avoided it?!

snowpiercer · 05/12/2021 01:09

I managed to avoid until now...

Last Saturday I was out and about and immediately knew from being so cold in that Baltic weather that my body left an open window for it to creep in. I just literally felt it coming through. I'm no longer a covid virgin and it is horrible. I'm early 30's, fit and healthy other wise but it's been coming in waves. Day 1 felt slightly irritable Day 2 banging head ache, Day 3 really low literally trying to pull myself out of bed, Day 4 felt better thought it was over, Day 5 how very wrong was I thinking it was over, Day 6 still dragging myself around the house and tomorrows Day 7 can't wait for what I might wake up to.

I've been in situations where I was close contact with people who have had it. My acupuncture guy had it while I had a session. My hair dresser had it after getting my hair done, my husband had it and i still didn't get it until last week.

bizboz · 05/12/2021 01:13

Another teacher. Over 2/3 of our staff have had it and many pupils, including TA and children in my class. Currently in the midst of a big outbreak. I have 2 DC at different schools and DH is a teacher in another school. 1 DC and DH had it in the summer and I didn't get it then. I have regularly done lateral flow tests since they became a thing and have never tested positive. It may well be that I had it asymptomatically early on, but if so I didn't seem to pass it to anyone in my household.

Now that I've posted on here I will undoubtedly contract Covid within days.

itsmschanandlerbong · 05/12/2021 01:24

No idea! Frontline worker (though not in healthcare - social services) still carrying out home visits throughout the pandemic. Have generally followed guidance but have no locked myself away either so have been visiting friends and family regularly, going out for meals, to the pub etc. Vaccinated early on so maybe that's had something to do with it. Also I'm 31 with no underlying health issues.

BHX3000 · 05/12/2021 01:37

No idea if I've avoided, or it has avoided me.

Worked throughout, public transport in dense big city, no masks or distance at work. Regularly meet ups where again, we don't take many measures.

I do practise good hygiene and wear an FFP2 mask where I can but I still don't know. It also can't be genetics as my entire family has caught it 3 times already...

IndigoC · 05/12/2021 02:24

I’m been super careful, playing hard to get, cautiously holding out for a sweeter variant with gentler ways to give my V card to. Wink

Sunshinealligator · 05/12/2021 05:31

Goodness knows. None of us have had it.
MIL worked as much throughout as she could- childcare.
FIL spent 3 weeks in hospital
DF spent 5 weeks in hospital- between 2 positive covid patients apparently at one point.
DD is in Upper school.
Both me and DH have worked during the pandemic.
DH was a "close contact" as was DD several times.

Repeated tests, always been negative.

Remmy123 · 05/12/2021 07:21

I'm quite sure my family have had it with no symptoms as we have al been heavily exposed.

scandikate · 05/12/2021 07:24

I don't think any of my family have had it which seems crazy as I'm a teacher, my children are at school and my husband commutes into London. I have not restricted any activities and never went down the obsessive hand gel/washing shopping route. I have had a negative antibodies test recently as was selected for one.

firstimemamma · 05/12/2021 07:32

I have never knowingly had it and have never changed a single part of how I live my life and have also been exposed to it loads due to nhs frontline NHS. I find 'managing to avoid it' an alien concept.
