Should schools close again?

I’m at the end of my tether.

Worried about Omicron, of course, and the devastating effects it could have on lives.

Worried about children missing out on even more education. Worried about being forced to stay at home again. And worried about people dying.

What do you think will happen? What should happen ?

@RedHot22

No. There’s loads of Covid in schools, they get tested, stay off for 10days if positive and then go back. Nothing has changed.

I actually think they should only stay off if too sick to go to school, regardless of whether they’re positive or not

Staying off only if sick with covid would do wonders for the number of staff available to be in school. Then you’ll get closures with no keyworker places or any online learning.
Treaclepie19 · 30/11/2021 18:01

It depends. On an individual school basis if they're struggling with not enough staff then yes.
If we find out this strain is awful for children then yes.

Otherwise I think there would be an uproar about it.
I'm able to homeschool my son because I'm a SAHM but so many people have really struggled.

FindingMeno · 30/11/2021 18:02

No.

cantkeepawayforever · 30/11/2021 18:02

It depends what you mean by 'opne'.

School buildings will stay 'open', with most children attending most of the time (unless they are ill). There will, mostly, be enough adults for physical safety to be maintained, most of the time. Occasionally, even on this basis, some schools will close because they run out of adults.

Is education properly 'open' (which is what most people give as the reason why they want schools to be open)? No, of course not. Being physically in school with some of your peers and having a random adult in front of you is NOT proper education.

However, it is really, really clear that for the vast majority of parents, physical opening of schools is enough - the quality of education is not something that they really mind about. Or else they would have rioted long since, pushing for the safety measures that would keep more teachers and pupils healthy, such as money for proper ventilation.

BirdyBirdyTweetTweet · 30/11/2021 18:03

No.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 30/11/2021 18:06

No!

I'm with the PP who asked when we are going to stop pretending.

I run a childcare setting and I'm eagerly (not really) awaiting my ventilation monitor thingy, apparently I carry it around the setting to see where I need more ventilation and presumably open a window or drill holes in the walls.

x2boys · 30/11/2021 18:07

Schools should be the last thing to close .

Rabblesthecat · 30/11/2021 18:09

Why should childless people give up their social lives and activities just so kids can go to school especially when it’s now proven schools are the biggest vector to transmissions

What a horrible comment.

But then I can see from your comment about your children wearing masks on the other thread that you really don't like to miss an opportunity to make yourself feel superior to all the 'sheep' who presumably don't give a shit about their children's education, so I'm not surprised you come out with this either.

That's an incredibly thick thing to say.

But as it goes I don't think anyone should be giving up anything any more. Save the convenience of wandering in a shop without a mask on, I'm not really bothered about that one.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 30/11/2021 18:12

No. As a parent and Assistant Headteacher of a large London secondary school with high level of cases in both our staff and student body - no. We must stop sacrificing our kids' futures so that adults can go to the pub or Primark.

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 30/11/2021 18:12

Should schools close again

NO. No, no, no, no, NO

Alltheblue · 30/11/2021 18:13

Too early to say but I'm concerned about the toddlers in SA.

Alltheblue · 30/11/2021 18:13

I do think vaccinations for younger children are needed urgently for those families who wish.

Alltheblue · 30/11/2021 18:14

I also feel parents are more concerned about getting their children taken off their hands than educating them. Schools are often a very poor second to one to one even if it's just an hour a day.

Topseyt · 30/11/2021 18:15

No. Of course schools shouldn't close. Nor should anything else.

EezyOozy · 30/11/2021 18:15

NO

DockOTheBay · 30/11/2021 18:15

No, never again

Silly comment and luckily not how it works.

In any case we are not facing either being curtailed atm.

I agree this is an incorrect assumption.
Eightandahalfyears · 30/11/2021 18:17

Nope. Neither should anything else.

TheKeatingFive · 30/11/2021 18:17

Big fat no

This doesn't really make sense ,unless you have a very young ,primary aged child maybe ?
Benjispruce5 · 30/11/2021 18:18

I work in primary. I think the only issue might be lack of staff and therefore closures . If Covid hits a school and they can’t afford supply( we don’t have the budget for it) then they’ll have to close classes.

Goldbar · 30/11/2021 18:18

No, absolutely not. Too much child abuse (in some cases resulting in child deaths) went under the radar in the last two lockdowns.

Almost everything else should close before schools do. School is a safe place for many children who live in dismal and dangerous homes.
