Should schools close again?

I’m at the end of my tether.

Worried about Omicron, of course, and the devastating effects it could have on lives.

Worried about children missing out on even more education. Worried about being forced to stay at home again. And worried about people dying.

What do you think will happen? What should happen ?

No they shouldn't, but I gave my teenager a lecture about revising for all tests and never knowing what might end up counting towards his gcse results, last night.
If it all goes pear shaped they may not go back as planned in January. I am mentally preparing for that.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 30/11/2021 17:17

No.

Purpletomato · 30/11/2021 17:18

No.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 30/11/2021 17:18

Unless omicron is proven to be really deadly and the boosters are ineffective then schools should stay open.

bideoverthere · 30/11/2021 17:19

Adults who can should be told to work from home.

Everyone should where masks everywhere - not just shops but cinemas, pubs etc.

Covid passports should be brought in for all theatres/ cinemas etc.

These mitigations should help reduce numbers and help school staff stay well and therefore keep schools open.

We have all of this in Scotland - we never got rid of masks and wfh - and vax passes since Oct(?) and already have confirmed community spread.

It all feels like trying to hold back the tide with a tea cup tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️ it doesn't work. None of it works. I wonder when we're all going to agree to stop pretending....

FrippEnos · 30/11/2021 17:19

I suspect that very few saying no have petitioned their MP for better ventilation in schools.

Elephantsparade · 30/11/2021 17:19

Perhaps they should shut for a couple of weeks over christmas and new year.

spitneybrears · 30/11/2021 17:20

Of course not.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 30/11/2021 17:20

On the fence

Teachers are struggling massively. If schools are playing a big part in the spread then they likely maybe should, especially as this variant seems to be ( a few news sites reporting) affecting young children more so

happytoday73 · 30/11/2021 17:20

No... My area is nearly a quarter of what it was in October.. Or are we again going to respond when it's high in the SE having ignored when it was equally high up north (with less bed capacity per head of population)

GiveMeNovocain · 30/11/2021 17:20

@FrippEnos

I doubt those saying yes are petitioning for adult spaces to shut. Proper face to face education isn't an optional extra
PurpleDaisies · 30/11/2021 17:22

Individual schools might have to if they get a lot of staff off or a large outbreak. Why would be close schools nationwide now?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/11/2021 17:23

As if that would make a blind bit of difference.
byvirtue · 30/11/2021 17:24

Eh did I miss the news that people are keeling over from omnicon?

Schools stay open.

FrippEnos · 30/11/2021 17:24

GiveMeNovocain

So if its so important why are more people not trying to get the government to spend money on better ventilation systems?

DinaofCloud9 · 30/11/2021 17:25

Of course not.

FrippEnos · 30/11/2021 17:27

Waxonwaxoff0

Not if people don't do it.

Don’t blame the people. Blame the bloody government.
Pieceofpurplesky · 30/11/2021 17:28

Teacher and parent here. School will have to shut if staff are Ill or isolating. What I am more concerned about as the parent of a Y13 student is the amount they are missing in school - staff off, Isolating, PCR tests - DS has been missing two of his teachers for the last two weeks and is just set independent study. I know this is the case in several local schools.

As a teacher and exam marker the quality of work is shocking. Cramming in all the content means less time for skills.

LumosSolem · 30/11/2021 17:29

Schools need to stay open.

As do pubs. As does everything tbh.

It all feels like trying to hold back the tide with a tea cup tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️ it doesn't work. None of it works. I wonder when we're all going to agree to stop pretending....

⬆️ seems about right to me.

Thanks, but I will blame the government and those that spout the 'all back to normal' rubbish for giving the government and easy out.

JanglyBeads · 30/11/2021 17:30

Ask not whether schools are going to close. Ask rather when students and staff in this country are going to be afforded some protections like those in other countries.

Puffalicious · 30/11/2021 17:30

Oh do be quiet. Stop scaremongering. I'm so over the panicking, it does noone any good.

LethargicActress · 30/11/2021 17:32

No, schools should stay open and so should everything else.

AlandAnna · 30/11/2021 17:33

Of course not.
There is good evidence that school closures (and the knock on effects) have had a terrible impact on children’s mental health.
