New booster programme

Imfedupwithallofthis · 29/11/2021 15:21

Booster will now available for all adults over 18, 'No sooner than 3 months from 2nd vaccine'.
Immunosuppressed should get 4th dose 3 months after 3rd dose, not 6 months.

The JCVI has advised to government that everyone over 18 should have a booster. They also said boosters should be prioritised by vulnerability.
So government need to decide what they’re doing with that advice. For example, they may still do it in age groups, or targeting specific vulnerabilities not already invited.

Imfedupwithallofthis · 29/11/2021 15:29

They have said that previous priorities should be observed, that is, in order of vulnerability/age/occupation

I thought the plan was always for everyone to get a booster, we're just waiting for them to get through the age groups. Has much changed? If we're waiting for them to get through different groups won't it end up being a 5/6 month gap anyway?

IndigoC · 29/11/2021 15:33

I’m not sure if this is good news for 40 somethings such as myself. I’m still not eligible under the rules to book a booster (not til next week). Will I now be competing with 18 year olds who had their second dose more recently? I struggle to see how the NHS will meet demand given they’re been issues servicing current booster demand for over 50s.

Quartz2208 · 29/11/2021 15:35

I think they will do it in order so us over 40s will be moved to 3 months probably this week and then in age order. At least that is what I thought it meant

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/11/2021 15:35

I know lots of people (Inc. myself and DH), who haven't yet been called for booster, despite being due (6 months since 2nd vaccine) all in our mid 50's. Big group still to do, so I suspect they won't drop down the groups before xmas.

Aside from this, those I know in their 80's and 70's have all now had their boosters.

ferretface · 29/11/2021 15:35

@IndigoC no, there will still be a priority list, government and the health authorities will determine when booster booking opens for those lower down the priority list.

Fingers crossed. If so, good news for everybody.
LumosSolem · 29/11/2021 15:36

I'm early 30s but had my second dose early June.

Surely it should be done in order of when you had your second vaccine anyway?

NotMyCat · 29/11/2021 15:44

V pleased. Means I get my 4th in about 8 weeks

Imfedupwithallofthis · 29/11/2021 15:44

I take it that most risk factors/occupations/over 40s have already been invited.

Over 40s likely to be invited/allowed to book this week.
After a suitable interval, over 30s, then over 20s, etc. etc.

Gradually down the age groups.

Booster after 3 months just seems like a lot. Especially since the vaccine manufacturers intend to have Omicron boosters available for "early 2022". Quarterly jabs?

DSGR · 29/11/2021 15:47

@BigWoollyJumpers you don’t need to be called, just go on the NHS vaccine booking website and book your booster

AlexandraEiffel · 29/11/2021 15:49

@BigWoollyJumpers you don't have to wait to be called. You can book online once you're 5 months post vaccine 2, for appts 6 months post vaccine. I'm 40s and can book now ready for 6 months in mid December. (I'm not going to as my eligibility has now been brought forward)

BigWoollyJumpers · 29/11/2021 15:59

I have been trying for weeks, bugger all available near us. The local site is managed by the GP practice, and you have to wait to be called up......

No, not much has changed. I think that was always the vague plan, but the JCVI hadn’t actually advised it yet. They advised it for over 50s first, then advised it for over 40s, and would probably have advised it for everyone else sooner or later. Now they’ve done that. Probably sooner than they otherwise would have done, and have advised shortening the gap between doses but I don’t think anyone thought 18-40s wouldn’t be offered one.

That’s what I was wondering. If you’re a healthy 20 something who had a second jab in august/September, so would have been due a booster in March but can now get one sooner, why not just wait for an updated omicron one? On a personal level I mean, I understand on a population level why they want everyone to have a booster as soon as possible.

The above doesn’t apply to me by the way, it was just a thought. I’m 14 weeks pregnant and about 4 months post second dose so I’ll be getting a booster when available so I can have it pre-third trimester.

twelly · 29/11/2021 16:12

I feel that the announcement that has been made in the last hour are of concern - now a fourth booster is being suggested. I am now beginning to be concerned over the vaccine overload - up until now I have been quite positive about vaccines and not concerned but a 4th vaccine makes me concerned.

Tealightsandd · 29/11/2021 16:12

@Imfedupwithallofthis

Let's hope so.

It's very good news they're extending the boosters, but the higher risk groups - over 40s, plus CV 18-49s - had to wait 5-6 months to book. And then wait for an available accessible appointment.

We definitely need to ensure appointments are prioritised for these groups first.

NotMyCat · 29/11/2021 16:12

A 4th booster was always going to be the plan for the people who needed a third primary, as the 4th is their "third booster"
twelly · 29/11/2021 16:16

So very soon when there are regulation to see you need to be fully vaccinated it won't be 2 vaccines it will be three then four. I don't feel comfortable with this approach at all

WarriorN · 29/11/2021 16:18

I'm 44 and Currently can only book a booster 6 months softer second. It was letting me do so last week, and says over 40s can book after 5 months but it's still 6 months post second jab.

I've re booked twice today though and there's so many more appointments than last week.

Battenburg77 · 29/11/2021 16:20

Quarterly jabs for teenagers. That's the direction of travel.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/11/2021 16:21

That's the same for me. I've booked on the national website but it'll mean half day off work so I'm hoping I get called by the local system so I can go somewhere more convenient.

WarriorN · 29/11/2021 16:23

In the summer load of drop ins popped up locally which I'm hoping will happen again.
