Travelling to Spain with unvaccinated teens

Stircrazyschoolmum · 29/11/2021 06:33

As covered by another thread, Spain has changed its entry requirements to double vaccinated tourists only. This impacts my son who has been unable to get a single jab yet due to having COVID.

Up to now the answer was a PCR test, but that seems to not be an option. I’m going to talk to the airline and travel company later, but wondered if anyone else was in a similar situation and had done so already?

What happens if you are medically exempt from getting vaccinated for example? Could this be argued in this situation?

Watching as I have an unvaccinated teen and we’re supposed to be going to Tenerife. Spoke to Jet 2 yesterday who told me the government advice is incorrect and would be updated. It hasn’t been as of this morning.

cloudtree · 29/11/2021 06:39

No, travel company will change your booking.

Billandben444 · 29/11/2021 07:02

I hope you get something sorted out. We've just returned (with an unvaccinated teen) and were impressed with how mask-wearing in enclosed public spaces is enforced - if you momentarily forget someone shouts 'Mascarilla!!' at you very loudly! We felt safer there than in the UK.

gemandjule · 29/11/2021 07:07

We went to Gozo in the summer. Malta had just introduced the same rule. Friends of ours had also booked with unvaccinated teens. They were not able to travel but the airline allowed them switch the flights to another country so they went to Italy instead. There were no exemptions to the rule though. Unvaccinated not allowed without hotel quarantine

Greentomatoes21 · 29/11/2021 07:21

What age of children does this apply to?

MaxNormal · 29/11/2021 07:25

This applies to twelve and up. As things stand they won't be able to travel from 1 December.

vera99 · 29/11/2021 07:37

Currently in Fuenteventura at the moment mask wearing is literally 100% even small kids. They are lovely friendly people who get that keeping their Island safe is number one priority. Jet2 were good about enforcing mask mandates stating that a letter from your doctor would be required if you were actually exempt. Non of this sunflower lanyard nonsense. The island isn't the greatest in Spain but have come back with a renewed respect for the Spanish and their culture. Their double jabbed or your not coming in is a great step forward if we bare ever to get rid of this plague overwhelming our health services. Unaccompanied teenagers at a bustop all wearing masks just imagine that in the UK and not one incidence of antisocial behaviour in our weeks stay. Another world is possible....

@Rshard Spoke to Jet 2 yesterday who told me the government advice is incorrect that's very interesting, I hope they are right! 13 & 15 year old here and don't expect to get away after all 😢

From 1 December 2021, the rules for entering Spain by air or sea change. If you’re planning travel to Spain, find out what you need to know about coronavirus there in the Coronavirus section.

Thanks for the responses, I’ll update if I hear something.

To be honest, the way things are looking it might be a blessing in disguise. I feel sorry for my son though, poor kid was super keen to get vaxxed but the extension of the 28 day rule to 6 weeks after COVID means he’s not eligible till Jan. Plus, if my understanding is right most European countries expect 2 doses which means he still won’t be able to go unless a PCR is allowed.

My daughter turns 12 in March which will add to the complexity!

Hopefully the airline will let you change your flights or offer a refund.

Lots of European countries now require all over 12s to be double vaccinated!

It isn’t a 6 week wait after covid, it’s 12 weeks. I hope that’s just a typo and not further bad news.

I suspect this will all change for next summer. No way will Spain risk turning about hundreds of thousands of uk families as 12-15 not double jabbed ( and therefore ruin another summer season for their economy). My 13 yr old remains un vaxxed and I'd prefer to keep it that way.

Argh! Thanks purpledaisies not sure why I thought it was 6 but we’ve no half term plans so I guess it makes little difference.

But most countries are now offering two jabs to 12-15 year olds. So there should be lots of double jabbed tourists by next summer. Even the n the UK two jabs will probably be offered by then.

Rshard · 29/11/2021 08:59

I’m not 100% convinced with what they told me seee?! The lady I spoke to read from a note they’d received from a company director.

They’ve not updated their website and Twitter feed is super quiet. I kind of think that a government website, multiple reputable news outlets would have checked their sources….

We’d be happy to re-arrange to be honest. Just would like to know either way.

Tal45 · 29/11/2021 09:08

I think 12-15's here will be able to be double jabbed by next summer. the 16-18's already are, it's just a matter or time IMO.

Tal45 · 29/11/2021 09:09

*of time

Mamadothehump · 29/11/2021 12:48

Same situation here - due to travel to one of the Canary Islands on 19/12. I have a 15 year old who has had one vax and a 13 year old who couldn't have it at school because they ran out of time and now can't get it because she had covid within the last 12 weeks. Waiting to hear back from travel company.

Billandben444 · 29/11/2021 13:11

We are supposed to be going in January, my 16 year old hasn’t been vaccinated, she doesn’t want it needle phobic and the chances of her been adversely affected are so low. Even if she decided to have it there wouldn’t be enough time to get double Vax.
This was a highly likely outcome that should have been explained to her when she decided not to have it. My teen GS won't have it and yet expects to come away with us next summer.

Kangaruby · 29/11/2021 13:17

Our new year hol appears off, hopefully UK will start to let teens be double jagged, feel safer in Spain than here ( have a place there and been twice ( luckily) since covid). Got covid here despite been triple vaccinated, it just seems constant at the moment, fed up with it but realise more fortunate and less affected than many

Rshard · 29/11/2021 14:31

Jet 2 have now updated their website with the double vaccination requirement as of 1 December

Mamadothehump · 29/11/2021 14:56

Well, that's that then.
